It turns out that wireless internet home surveillance systems aren't just about security - they're also about selling homes at the highest price.A new scientific poll from NerdWallet says 15 percent of homeowners use their home security systems to view people looking at their homes. But in a state with a troubled past, some saw the comments as racist.Then, on Monday, the day before the Mississippi election, someone hung several nooses outside the state capitol and left signs, including one that read “We’re hanging nooses to remind people that times haven’t changed.”“I think the controversy over the Senate race in Mississippi is a microcosm over the debates we’re having about race nationally,” says Brian Levin, with the Center for the Study of Hate & Extremism.Also this week, the trial started for the man accused of killing a woman and hurting dozens of others after he rammed his car into a crowd of people protesting a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. “I think this political polarization has also bled over into an increase in hate crimes,” says Levin.Levin, who studies hate crimes, says the country has seen an increase the past three years in a row, given a recent spike in hate crimes, including the attack on a synagogue that killed 11 people and the apparent racially motivated murders of two African Americans outside a Kentucky grocery store. It's a frightening case of road rage that happened in broad daylight and spanned several communities.Now Police in Allen Park, Michigan are asking for the public's help in finding the man who was driving a black Nissan Altima with a damaged fender and out of state plates on the front and back of the vehicle. Detective Jim Thorburn with the Allen Park Police Department said the man chased another driver several miles and then unleashed at least eight rounds of gunfire at another driver in broad daylight on the southbound Southfield Fwy ramp to I-94. It all started with a fender bender around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday in Detroit, in the area of Chicago near Greenfield. The driver of a pick up truck tried to exchange information, he told police, when the black Nissan Altima driver pulled out a gun. That when he ran. "He was being chased by a Nissan Ultima and he had a big pick up truck and he thought by cutting through fields and stuff he would lose the Ultima," Thorburn said.But that didn't happen. The victim hopped on the Southfield Freeway southbound driving to the I-94 ramp, where the suspect who was still chasing him, opened fire. The victim was hit in the backside but was able to keep driving, he finally lost the shooter, pulled over in Taylor and called police. Police photos show the side of the pick up truck riddled with bullet holes. A big bullet hole in the head rest was a sign that the suspect was likely shooting to kill. The victim escaped with a superficial bullet wound to the backside. Today he said he is in pain, but recovering. They'll also provide free advertising during the month.The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce represents more than 4 million Hispanic-owned businesses. It says Latino business owners have been hit particularly hard during the pandemic and need support.Many have limited relationships with banks and are in neighborhoods considered “challenging” to lend to. Many were left out of the Paycheck Protection Program.“In round one, we saw many Latino-owned businesses were really largely left out of those opportunities,” said Ramiro Cavazos, President of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “Half of our businesses have banking relationships. If you did not have a bank relationship, many of them were shut out.”On average, Hispanic-owned businesses only have about 27 days’ worth of capital reserved. A quarter of them have had to close, at least temporarily, since the pandemic began.“Our Latino-owned businesses provide jobs for our community,” said Cavazos. “They also pay taxes and make investments in their community. It's not too hard to spot massive housing projects being built around San Diego County right now.But they may not be enough to provide little relief to the rising rents and home prices around the region.A recent report from the San Diego Housing Commission said the city would need to build on average as many as 22,000 housing units per year for the next decade. But in 2017, only 10,000 units were authorized countywide."It's not so much that there is resistance to it, it's just the fact that it's hard to do," said Jeff Stevens, chair of the Mira Mesa Community Planning Group. "If you have to tear something down in order to build something else, it takes time and money."Some of the city's larger projects are in Mira Mesa - where Casa Mira View will have about 2,000 apartments when complete.And to the west at Hansen's Aggregates, a quarry that runs through Carroll Canyon, Shea and Lennar are planning to build what's called 3 Roots. The complex would have 1,800 units - including 186 single-family homes, 981 condos, and 633 apartments (180 of which will be affordable). The complex is about to go through environmental review. Still, residents are already expressing concerns over impacts like traffic."I want people to have affordable housing, that's very important. And also we want the contractors, subcontractors to have jobs, and growth is always important. But they need to think it through first before they do it," said John Svelan, a longtime Mira Mesa resident. ,Stevens said his board has reacted positively to 3 Roots, which would extend Carroll Canyon road.
