SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff's Department has released the number of inmates it transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody in 2019. In a meeting that lasted nearly four hours on Tuesday, the department announced it transferred 271 people to ICE for offenses like assault, battery, and sexual abuse exploitation. The information was released during the virtual Truth Act Forum, a forum required by law, for any local law enforcement agency that chooses to transfer people to ICE. After the department's presentation, there were hours of public comment criticizing the practice. There was also a presentation from the San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium. "We want to end all transfers, regardless of whether they were allowed under the law or not," said Lilian Serrano, the chair of the consortium. Critics also argue that Sheriff Bill Gore has found a loophole by posting lists of "Inmates Pending Release"; critics are calling for that practice to stop. "What we’re seeing is ICE picking people up in the parking lots -- this is a practice we’re seeing throughout our county," said Serrano. After listening to hours of public comment, Gore addressed the community's concerns, saying he wants to form a working group to look at some of the issues brought up during public comment. “I think we can come to an accommodation when it comes to the inmate pending release report. I think we can make changes there, significant changes there,” said Gore. The sheriff said he's following the Values Act, only transferring those with a qualifying conviction or judicial warrant, with ICE only allowed contact with inmates if they agree to be interviewed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The two brothers convicted of killing their parents at their Beverly Hills mansion have been reunited in prison, according to the Associated Press.A spokesperson for the corrections department says 47-year-old Erik Menendez has moved into the same housing unit as his 50-year-old brother, Lyle Menendez.Both brothers are serving life sentences for shooting and killing their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989.Officials say Lyle was moved from Mule Creek State Prison to San Diego’s R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility in February, where his brother has been held in a separate unit since 2013. Wednesday, Erik moved into the same facility, where inmates interact in rehabilitation programs. The brothers can now spend time together during meal time and recreational periods. Each of the brothers has served time at three other state prisons. The brothers claim the murders happened after they were sexually abused by their father. Prosecutors said during the trial that the brothers wanted their parents’ multimillion-dollar estate. 1091

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The number of rising COVID-19 cases is causing a nationwide shortage in testing supplies, and some San Diego institutions are looking for ways to tackle the deficit.“I think it’s going to get worse in the short term, so institutions all across the country need to be preparing as if it’s going to get worse,” said Dr. David Pride, the director of molecular microbiology lab at UC San Diego Health. “Across San Diego, institutions have been coming to us experiencing shortages of testing supplies.”Pride said UCSD Health has been looking at pool, or batch, testing as a possible solution to the shortage problem.“There’s the option of rather than having one patient per one test, to try to put multiple different patients together and try to perform one test on that pool of patients together,” he said.This type of testing could help UCSD’s current testing supply last much longer, he said.“They could take a nasal swab, a nasopharyngeal swab, and an oropharyngeal swab. We take those specimens, and we put them together,” Pride explains.He said the key is to spot the large number of patients who need to be tested but don’t appear to have symptoms of COVID-19.The group swabs would then be combined and tested at once.“If that pool is negative, then all the patients are negative, and if that pool is positive, then you need to go back and test each one individually,” he said.The strategy could be put to use in the next week or two, according to Pride.“It’s something that we certainly have validated to demonstrate that it can work,” he said. “We have submitted our strategy to the FDA and have gotten pretty good feedback about doing it.”However, Dr. Eric McDonald, the county’s epidemiology department's medical director, said with the current positivity rate across the county, the technique may not be too beneficial at all labs.The County of San Diego announced this week that it’s changing who can get a test as its free sites.The priority will be people who fall under the high-risk category, like healthcare workers and those with underlying health conditions.The county also announced a partnership with a local company that would provide up to 2,000 COVID-19 tests per day. 2215
