ACCRA, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Ghanaian government allayed the fears of many here on Thursday that it would provide funding for the treatment of persons living with HIV/AIDS in the country.Vice President John Dramani Mahama affirmed this when he addressed a ceremony to mark this year's World AIDS Day at Obuasi, near Kumasi, 270 km north of the capital Accra.Mahama said should the Global Fund pull out of supporting the country, the government would partner with development partners to raise the 5.8 million U. S. dollars needed yearly for the treatment of HIV/AIDS patients."Government will work together with the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) and donor partners to ensure that people living with HIV/ AIDS have access to antiretroviral drugs."The Presidency is with you, and whatever we will do to win the fight against HIV/AIDS shall be done," Mahama said.Ghana's HIV/AIDS infection rate, according to official figures, has dropped from 3 percent to the current 1.5 percent, albeit with pockets of higher rates of infection among some populations in the country.Mahama called for more innovativeness in mobilizing resources to avoid the danger of retrogression.Director-General of the GAC Angela El-Adas announced that the Ministry of Health had pledged 2.5 million Ghana cedis (1.66 million dollars) out of the 5.8 million dollars needed for next year.Meanwhile, in the capital, the Ghana Network of Persons Living with HIV and AIDS (NAP+ GHANA) joined persons living with HIV (PLHIV) globally on Thursday to commemorate this year's World AIDS Day."We stand united with our fellow PLHIV and the global HIV and AIDS community by fully supporting the vision of 'Getting to Zero', " Charity Owusu Danso, vice president of NAP+ Ghana, said in a message here.Established in 2005, NAP+GHANA is a network of member associations of persons living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana to represent the views, hopes and aspirations of PLHIV across the country."We are extremely worried. Everyday, we receive reports from PLHIV across the country that anti-retroviral drugs are out of stock or that hospitals or clinics won't give HIV treatment to new patients because there aren't even enough drugs for existing patients, " the statement said.

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Apple on Friday suffered a major setback in its global patent war, as a German court ruled over its copyright infringement battle in favor of Motorola Mobility.The German court ruled that Apple's iPhone and iPad infringe a Motorola patent and issued an injunction banning the import of iPhones and 3G-capable iPads into Germany.The dispute, one of Apple's several patent lawsuits around the world, is over a Motorola patent essential to GPRS. Motorola has been negotiating with Apple over licensing terms and conditions since 2007, and it will continue its efforts to resolve its global patent dispute as soon as practicable, said Motorola Mobility in a statement on Friday."We're going to appeal the court's ruling right away. Holiday shoppers in Germany should have no problem finding the iPad or iPhone they want," an Apple spokesman told tech news site AllThingsD.Apple is not too concerned about losing out in the Christmas shopping season as it has plenty of iPhones and iPads in Germany already, AllThingsD cited unidentified sources as saying.The ruling is against Apple's European sales company and only impacts its products sold in Germany. The German court also ruled that Motorola is entitled to a damages award.Apple can appeal the ruling to a higher court and request a stay of the injunction, according to a blog post of Florian Mueller, a U.S. patent expert who has been closely following patent lawsuits in the mobile industry.Mueller said should Apple make the appeal but the court declines the stay, Motorola must post a 100 million euro (around 134 million U.S. dollars) bond before the court will enforce the injunction.In August, Apple also filed a suit in Germany over the design of Motorola's tablet Xoom, which runs Google's Android system. But Apple did not make it clear whether it will seek to block the sales of Xoom in Europe.Also on Friday, Samsung won an appeal from the Australian High Court overturning a previous Apple victory that effectively banned Samsung from selling its Galaxy Tab in Australia.Based on claims of infringing Apple's patents, the Cupertino, California-based tech giant has been seeking court order to block Samsung's Galaxy line of mobile devices around the world.A German court issued an injunction in August, blocking Samsung from selling its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets across all European Union members, except for the Netherlands.On Thursday, Apple said it will appeal a San Jose, California judge's refusal to ban sales of Samsung 4G smartphones and Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets in the United States.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 3 (Xinhua)-- Amazon on Thursday launched an e-book lending service for owners of its Kindle devices, letting them borrow one digital book per month with no due date.Amazon said Kindle owners with an annual Prime membership can choose from thousands of books to borrow for free, including over 100 current and former New York Times Bestsellers. The online retail giant did not give an exact figure on the number of books of the new service.According to the company, readers' notes, highlights and bookmarks in borrowed books will be saved, so they will have them later if they purchase or re-borrow the book. Customers can have one book out at a time and the borrowed book should be returned through the Kindle device when they want to borrow a new one.In a press release, Amazon said it has reached agreement with publishers for a vast majority of titles for a fixed fee. But in some cases, Amazon is purchasing a title each time it is borrowed by a reader under standard wholesale terms.An Amazon Prime membership costs 79.99 U.S. dollars a year in the United States and gives members free two-day shipping and free access to the company's video streaming service containing some 13, 000 TV shows and movies.The new service is not compatible with smartphones, personal computers or tablet computers from other vendors running with Kindle apps, which makes Amazon's Kindle e-ink readers and its latest low-price tablet Kindle Fire more enticing to customers.According to Amazon, the Kindle Fire, which is priced at 199 U. JINAN, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists have made a breakthrough that could lead to more effective treatments for leprosy.A team from Shandong Provincial Institute of Dermatology and Venereology in east China has identified two new risk variants near IL23R and RAB 32 genes that are responsible for the disease, according to a report published online Monday in the scientific journal Nature Genetics.Knowing that the two gene variants influence susceptibility to leprosy could allow doctors to diagnose the disease in sufferers earlier in its outset, as well as to develop new treatments. A genetic database could now be built up to predict those people particularly susceptible to leprosy, said Zhang Furen, the leader of the research team.The study involved more than 10,000 samples being taken from leprosy sufferers and healthy test subjects and analysed.Leprosy is a chronic nerve-killing disease that leads to problems with patients' skin, feet, hands, legs and eyes. More than 200,000 newly-contracted leprosy cases are reported worldwide every year, and China has around one tenth of the world's sufferers.
