SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California had a near-record number of daily coronavirus deaths as pandemic cases strained hospitals and reduced normal intensive care space to a record low. Yet Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday that there are hints residents may be heeding medical officials’ increasingly desperate calls for caution during the holidays. The transmission rate has been slowing for nearly two weeks. The rate of positive cases reached a new high of 12.3% over a two-week period but was starting to trend down. Yet the state's worst surge is taking a horrendous toll that threatens to only worsen if people gather during the holidays. 650

Retirees should be spending their time golfing, taking vacations and playing with grandchildren. Instead, one Ohio man is doing the opposite.Robert Blocksom, 87, is looking for a job, and he’s not alone.“It's definitely a trend. The bureau of labor statistics is predicting an increase over the next five years," Lori Long and Entrepreneurship Professor at Baldwin Wallace University said.In the last year, nearly 300,000 Americans 85 and older were working. That number is up 3 percent from the start of the 2006 recession.Industries, like the trucking industry, who years ago might not have given Blocksom a shot, could now do just that.“The shortage of drivers spans the entire country and virtually every trucking company in the United States," Frank Gagyi, President of the Buckeye Interimobile Trucking company in Cleveland said. And that’s where Blocksom is hoping a door will open.“I've always liked driving, so I figured that I'd like to be able to make some money driving," he said.Since his wife's been ill, he's had to sell his home, mobile trailer and other assets to cover expenses. Now he says trucking is a practical solution for income.“That would be the best way to do it," he said. And though it’s something he has to do, he’s pretty optimistic about trying something new."I believe I can do this pretty well, and it would be a nice challenge and it'd be fun,” he said.Blocksom still has to pass his commercial driver's licenses test for him to start working. His classes for that test start next month. He said the ideal shift would be local weekend trips, so he can still care for his wife.  1638

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Police say a shooting at a Sacramento mall on Black Friday has killed one person and left another with life-threatening wounds. It happened at around 6:30 p.m. at Arden Fair Mall. Fire officials tell KPIX-TV that one person was found dead at the mall and another was found at a bank outside of the mall and was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The mall was evacuated in the midst of Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days. Police say the suspect fled and there's no active threat at the mall. 553

RICHMOND, Va - An EMT with the Richmond Ambulance Authority (RAA) is a one-of-a-kind essential worker to her family, and now she has the doll to prove it.April O'Quinn was one of five national winners in the "Heroes with Heart" contest, run by American Girl.Families were asked to nominate a hero fighting COVID-19 who risked their lives to help others during the pandemic.O'Quinn was nominated by her niece, Lacey, who lives in Texas. Lacey nominated her aunt after the EMT worker returned to work after recovering from COVID-19."The lung problems were probably the worst part for me. I couldn't lay down. I had to sit up. I slept sitting up," O'Quinn said.Emergency Medical Services seemed like the perfect fit for O'Quinn, and she didn't hesitate to return once doctors gave her the OK."She didn't hesitate for a moment," Lacey wrote on her contest submission, which was published by American Girl."I feel very fortunate that I only have the minor problems that I have and I can be back to work," O'Quinn said. "I like to get in there, help people, and then step back into the dark."O'Quinn got a phone call last month from Lacey with the exciting news."Lacey was on the other side screaming that we had won — I was in shock," O'Quinn said. "I had no words. I ended up crying because I couldn't say anything.""The excitement and smiles as she opened her hero doll were all worth it," she said.April is now one of five essential workers nationwide celebrated by American Girl."We at the Richmond Ambulance Authority are so excited for April and her niece Lacey. We're thankful American Girl held a contest to recognize our frontline heroes and are thrilled to have one of our employees represent EMS," RAA CEO Chip Decker said. The winners received a custom American Girl Doll and outfit in their hero's likeness and a 0 gift card."The stars and brightness in her face and eyes was amazing. It was all worth the pictures, even though I hate pictures," O'Quinn said. The review she cares about most is holding onto her doll thousands of miles away in Texas."It'll be something that neither one of us will ever forget. It's a bond that I'll hold with her forever," O'Quinn said. This story was originally published by Jake Burns on WTVR in Richmond, Virginia. 2267
