SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego-based owners and operators of the conservative One America News Network filed a million defamation lawsuit Monday against MSNBC and political commentator Rachel Maddow for saying on air the network ``really literally is paid Russian propaganda.'' The lawsuit filed in San Diego federal court by Herring Networks Inc., owners of the One America News Network -- or OAN -- calls Maddow's on-air statements ``utterly and completely false'' because OAN ``is wholly financed by the Herrings, an American family'' and ``has never been paid or received a penny from Russia or the Russian government.'' Maddow and MSNBC could not immediately be reached for comment. Maddow made the statements during a July 22 segment of her show, in which she cited a Daily Beast article stating that an OAN on-air reporter was ``on the payroll for the Kremlin.'' Herring Networks' court papers say the reporter, Kristian Rouz, is originally from the Ukraine and started his journalism career by writing articles for Sputnik News, which is affiliated with the Russian government. According to Herring Networks, Rouz was merely a freelancer for Sputnik who selected his own article topics for submission, and his work there had no significance toward his work for OAN. OAN demanded a retraction of Maddow's statement, according to the suit, which says that an attorney for NBC Universal refuted that Maddow's use of the word ``literally'' was not simply a figure of speech. The Herrings' attorney, Skip Miller, said in a statement that ``One America is wholly owned by the Herring family in San Diego,'' who he called ``as American as apple pie.'' Regarding Maddow's statements, Miller said, ``This is a false and malicious libel, and they're going to answer for it in a court of law.'' SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former Camp Pendleton Marine was sentenced Monday to more than 17 years in prison for owning and distributing child pornography.William Walsh IV, 55, was arrested in May 2017. Escondido Police officers searched his home and seized hundreds of files Walsh had downloaded through peer-to-peer file sharing software.A jury found Walsh guilty of all charges. U.S. District Judge Anthony J. Battaglia said Walsh’s conduct was “on the extreme end of the cases I have seen.”“Today a man who committed terrible crimes against children was sentenced to many years in prison,” said U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman. “These horrible experiences will echo in the hearts and minds of young victims for a lifetime, and I am deeply distressed and deeply committed to pursuing cases that will protect our vulnerable youth from people like Walsh.”“Today’s sentence confirms that this predator can no longer victimize innocent children because he is off the streets and he is offline,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge John Brown. “This investigation showcases the success of collaborative federal and local investigations working toward a common goal.”Walsh will serve his sentence in federal prison. 1208

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A female sea lion Monday wandered onto the streets of Point Loma, prompting spectators to gather and springing a rescue team into action.According to a passerby, the sea lion was spotted in the middle of Garrison Street around 4 p.m.According to crews, the sea lion would’ve had to cross Rosecrans Street to get to Garrison. Rescuers from SeaWorld responded to the scene, adding that the sea lion appears health and at a normal body weight, but they’ll need to further examine her to learn more.SeaWorld also said it’s unusual for a sea lion to wander that far away from the bay, but the animals have been found on porches, inside hotels and on driveways. 683

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 55-year-old homeless man who was attacked with a skateboard while sleeping in North Park has died, San Diego Police said.Arthur Angulo was sleeping in alley in the 2800 block of El Cajon Boulevard  at around 4:30 a.m. Saturday when a man bashed him repeatedly with a skateboard, according to police.  Angulo suffered ``visible signs of major trauma to his upper body,'' San Diego police homicide Lt. Todd Griffin said.``The attack was unprovoked," officer Tony Martinez said over the weekend.RELATED: Sleeping homeless man attacked in North ParkAngulo was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where medical staff determined he would not survive and placed him on life support, Griffin said.He was removed from life support Thursday "and died in the hospital as the result of his injuries,'" Griffin said.Police said the attacker is white, about six feet tall, and between 19 and 26 years old.
