BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Wednesday urged the country's senior officials to take the 60th anniversary of the founding of the New China as a new start for carrying on its modernization drive while maintain social stability.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when presiding over the 16th group study for the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, which was themed on understanding and practicing the socialist modernization since the founding of New China.     "Many important revelations come up if we look back on how the Party has led people on the path of socialist modernization," said Hu, stressing the importance of upholding economic development as the central task and promoting comprehensive and sustainable development.     Hu stressed the study of the principle of "freeing our mind, seeking truth from facts, be united and look ahead", which was put forward by late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping.     Hu said that policies regarding reform should be scientific and the methods of practicing these policies should be well-coordinated. Such reform policies should cover economy, politics, culture, society and all other aspects.     Hu emphasized on ensuring social stability while deepening reform.     "Without stability, nothing can be done and even those we have achieved will be lost. We should pay special attention to conflicts occurring among people and solve them properly," he said, adding that various issues that affect social stability should be coped with carefully to ensure people's livelihood.     Hu urged all study members to regard the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China as a new starting point to deepen socialist modernization and made new achievements in building a well-off society.

BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Li Changchun has pledged to strengthen cooperation between Chinese and foreign media and to facilitate foreign media coverage of China. Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks Friday evening when he met the heads of 10 major media organizations attending the World Media Summit in Beijing.     The Chinese government has been promoting media development and supporting Chinese media in enhancing exchanges and cooperation with foreign counterparts in news, human resources, information technologies and business development, he said. MOSCOW, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese merchants will be allowed to retrieve their goods in a closed Moscow market, the head of a Chinese coordination group said on Thursday.     A Chinese coordination group on Thursday discussed with Moscow's consumer department the clearing up of Chinese merchants' stalls in the Cherkizovsky market as well as the transferring of their goods.     The Russian side agreed to take further steps to safeguard the market's order and to work with the Chinese side to crack down on the illegal activities, said Cai Guiru, head of the temporary Chinese coordination group and chairperson of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Russia.     It is agreed that Chinese merchants will be allowed to clean up their stalls and ship out their merchandise during a specific period of time every day, Cai said.     The Russian side took "sincere and earnest" attitudes towards the handling of the market closure, in the hope that most of the Chinese merchants will be able to retrieve their goods safely, she said.     This meeting is helpful and the Russian side heard positive opinions from Chinese vendors, said Georgy Smoleyevcky, first deputy head of the Moscow Consumer Market and Services Department.     The Russian side will make conclusions accordingly and give instructions to relevant departments, he said, expressing the hope that complaints from Chinese traders will be less and less in future.     The official also dismissed the speculation that a Chinese shopping mall will be built in the place of the closed Cherkizovsky, Russia's biggest wholesale market.     The coordination group, formed under the auspices of the Chinese embassy in Russia in July, involves heads of China's provincial chambers of commerce.     Russian police abruptly shut down the nearly 300-hectare market in northeastern Moscow on June 29, after the disclosure of various illegal and irregular operations in the market by the Russian Federal Supervision Service for Consumer Rights Protection and People Welfare.     A Chinese senior delegation, led by Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng, reached broad consensus with the Russian side on the closure issue.

KAMPALA, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Special Envoy on African Affairs Liu Guijin on Wednesday called for concerted efforts to be made especially by western countries toward an early ending of Darfur crisis in western Sudan through negotiations between warring parties.     "There is no military solution on the ground. The only possible solution to Darfur problem is the political process," Liu told reporters in a press briefing held here at the Chinese Embassy.     "We need a comprehensive approach to address the problem. To have embargoes or sanctions will not solve the problem," he said during a two-day visit here.     Liu said that China has been extensively involved in facilitating the peace process in Darfur by persuading the Sudanese government to show more flexibility, which has led to Sudan's acceptance of a hybrid peacekeeping mission in the region led by the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).     He further urged his western colleagues, who seem to have more access to and influence on rebels, to spare no effort to bring them to the negotiation table.     "We appeal to our western partners to exert more influence to convince the rebels to agree and come to the negotiating table with the government of Sudan," he said.     The smooth implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) and the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) reached between northern and southern Sudan is the only means to achieve total and sustainable peace in the country, he noted.     The envoy said he fully supports the position taken by the AU and the Arab League on the arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al Bashir issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in March this year.     The warrant details charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during the conflict in Darfur.     The AU has decided not to cooperate with ICC before an independent investigation is done by former South African President Thabo Mbeki.     "We criticize such move and refuse to cooperate with it. The position of the Chinese government is in compliance with the AU and the Arab League position," Liu said, noting President Bashir has a significant role to play in the implementation of CPA and DPA.     "President Bahir has played a very key role in DPA and CPA. How can you implement them without the involvement of the Sudanese government? If you want peace to be realized in Sudan, the government is a must in this process," he said.     On the concern that the deteriorating relationship between Sudan and neighboring Chad could further impede the peace process in Darfur, Liu said China has been mediating between the two countries to normalize their bilateral relations.     In his recent visits to the two countries, he had tried to persuade the two sides that normalizing the bilateral relationship is for their mutual and shared interests, Liu said.
