Few masks, no social distancing, hugs, and handshakes were likely a jarring sight for public health experts and Americans cautiously going about life amid the coronavirus pandemic. With hundreds of our nation’s leaders sitting shoulder to shoulder last Saturday in the White House Rose Garden, President Donald Trump picked Judge Amy Coney Barrett to fill the open seat on the Supreme Court following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. In the six days that have followed, at least 10 known coronavirus cases have emerged from that event, including President Donald Trump, first lady Melania Trump, Sens. Thom Tillis, and Mike Lee, Notre Dame John I. Jenkins, Pastor Greg Laurie, Gov. Chris Christie, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany and former White House adviser Kellyanne Conway. The White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) also said an unnamed reporter who attended Saturday's announcement also tested positive for the virus. That person became symptomatic on Wednesday and tested positive on Friday. The WHCA has confirmed that two other journalists who cover the White House have tested positive for the virus in recent days, though it's unclear if those unnamed reporters were present for Barrett's nomination. In addition, others who have been in contact with Trump, White House senior aide Hope Hicks, and RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel, have tested positive for the virus. The CDC says that the incubation period for the coronavirus is up to 14 days following infection, meaning it’s possible more attendees could develop symptoms in the coming days.Given the incubation period, the CDC urges those who have been in close contact with positive coronavirus cases to quarantine for 14 days. With a number of prominent members of government now infected with the virus, it’s unclear how many US senators, senior White House aides, and others in the upper echelons of the US government will follow these guidelines after snubbing social distancing guidelines. For those who have been infected, they now are urged to isolate for at least 10 days to prevent the spread of the virus. In severe cases, isolation could be required for up to 20 days, the CDC says. 2187

For many, Labor Day simply signifies the end of summer and it offers a great excuse for an extended weekend. However, there’s a deeper meaning behind the national holiday, which has roots as far back as the 1880s.Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement. It’s dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers, the bedrock of the U.S. economy and the country's prosperity.“It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country,” according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. As for the founder of Labor Day, there is still some doubt about who first proposed the holiday for workers. Some records show Peter J. McGuire, a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was the first to suggest the holiday. Meanwhile, others believe that machinist Matthew Maguire proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.Regardless, Labor Day celebrations gained popularity and communities across the U.S. began making it a state holiday. First, Oregon passed it into law, followed by states like Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday and in June of that year, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday of each year a national holiday.Since then, Labor Day celebrations have evolved. In the early years, Americans celebrated with street parades and festivals.“Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday,” the Department of Labor says.Today, the holiday is still celebrated in cities and towns across the U.S. with parades, picnics, barbecues, firework displays and more. 1928

First lady Melania Trump's spokeswoman went after rapper T.I. Tuesday, whose most recent music video features a Trump lookalike dancing without clothes in a fake Oval Office."Like it or not, she is the first lady and this is the White House," Stephanie Grisham, Trump's communications director, told CNN in a statement. "It's disrespectful and disgusting to portray her this way simply because of politics. These kinds of vulgar attacks only further the divisiveness and bias in our country -- it needs to stop." 520

Former Michigan State University women's gymnastics coach Kathie Klages was charged Thursday with two counts of lying to a peace officer in connection to the investigation into the school's handling of Larry Nassar's sexual abuse at the school, according to the Michigan Attorney General's office."While investigating how Larry Nassar was able to get away with sexually assaulting hundreds of individuals on and off Michigan State's campus, Klages denied to Michigan State Police detectives having been told prior to 2016 of Nassar's sexual misconduct," the release said."Witnesses have said that they reported Nassar's sexual abuse to Klages dating back more than 20 years."The charges are for both a felony and a misdemeanor, the release said. The arrest warrant was approved Thursday morning and Klages is required to turn herself in to Lansing Police by the weekend, according to Michigan Attorney General spokeswoman Andrea Bitely.Klages was the women's gymnastics coach when Nassar, a prominent team doctor for MSU and USA Gymnastics, sexually abused hundreds of girls and women for decades under the guise of providing medical treatment.Nassar pleaded guilty last year to state charges of criminal sexual conduct and federal charges of child pornography. As part of his plea deal, Michigan courts allowed any and all of his victims to speak to him and put their experience in the public record.Nearly 200 girls and women -- an "army of survivors," as they said -- came forward to describe harrowing tales of Nassar's abuse and to take on his system of enablers at Michigan State, USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic Committee.Klages, who retired in 2017, was one person named in the hearings. Gymnast Larissa Boyce said that she told Klages 20 years ago about Nassar's abuse, but nothing was done."Instead of being protected, I was humiliated. I was in trouble and brainwashed into believing that I was the problem," said Boyce, who at the time was a member of MSU's youth gymnastics program.Boyce said Klages told her that she could not imagine Nassar "doing anything questionable" and then discouraged her from filing a formal complaint, according to a federal lawsuit."This could have stopped in 1997," Boyce said. "But instead of notifying authorities or even my parents, we were interrogated. We were led to believe we were misunderstanding a medical technique.""I was not protected by the adults I trusted," she said.In the wake of the stunning sentencing hearings, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette appointed a Special Independent Counsel to look into who at Michigan State knew about Nassar, when they knew it, and what they did about it. The charges against Klages stem from that investigation.The-CNN-Wire 2734
