SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three prominent Democrats have filed papers with the City of San Diego declaring their intention to run for mayor in 2020. San Diego City Councilwoman Barbara Bry, Assemblyman Todd Gloria, and Congressman Scott Peters all submitted documents to the City Clerk, allowing them to fund raise for the 2020 primary on March 3. They would replace Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican, who is termed out in 2020. Bry formally announced her candidacy on Wednesday. She said her experience as a high tech entrepreneur and nonprofit leader give her a unique approach to tackling key city issues like cost of housing, homelessness, clean energy, and educating students for the jobs of tomorrow. "That will be very important for me to get my message out and to meet people and to learn about their issues."Peters, recently re-elected to the House of Representatives, was in Washington D.C. and unavailable for an interview. A spokeswoman for the Congressman said he formed an exploratory committee but has made no decision yet as to whether to run. A spokesman for Gloria, who served as interim mayor after Bob Filner resigned in 2013, would only say "stay tuned."Political analyst John Dadian said he expects Republicans to file to run for the spot soon. The job is technically non-partisan."Even though they're all Democrats, don't look at it as a monolith," he said. "They all have supporters for different reasons. They all have championed different issues."So far, six people have filed to run for mayor in 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The parents of more than 600 migrant children still haven’t been found, more than two and a half years after thousands of children were separated from their parents at the border.The separations happened from 2017 to 2018, as part of President Trump’s zero tolerance policy.According to a tweet from the ACLU, the parents of 666 migrant children have not been found, that number is over 100 more than what was reported during a court hearing in late October.The zero tolerance policy started in 2017, when over 2,700 children were separated from their parents after crossing the U.S. - Mexico border. The policy was ended by San Diego federal Judge Dana Sabraw in 2018.Last month, the same judge asked the Trump administration to do more to help find the children’s parents.Richard Villasana is the founder of Forever Homes for Foster Kids, a San Diego charity that helps locate families of children in the U.S. foster care system, often times working in Latin American countries.“Some of these children will never be reunited with their parents because there was just not enough information to work with,” says Villasana.The ACLU says the children’s parents are believed to be in their home countries. Villasana says the process of finding relatives in other countries is very complicated, often times only having a last name or a city to work with. Other times, Villasana says, volunteers have to depend on the child’s memory for information, which can be challenging if they are too young.“Depending upon their age, they’re probably not going to be of any help to help the attorneys with ACLU and those non-profits to connect them to their parents,” explains Villasana.As reunification efforts continue, Villasana expects that it will be years before these children’s parents are found and he says it’s likely some will never be located.Another court hearing is scheduled in San Diego on December 4th. 1932

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego Padres are heading to the postseason, and while fans can’t attend games at Petco Park, the team is giving the Friar Faithful a chance to cheer them on at the ballpark while in their cars.The Padres Postseason Watch Party will take place during next week’s Wild Card round, with the drive-in event happening in Petco Park’s Lexus Premier Lot on K Street, off 14th Street.RVs and campers will not be allowed at the watch party.The games will be shown on three separate large LED video screens, and fans at the event will be able to choose from different restaurant partners -- depending on the game -- when it comes to the ballpark eats. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Blood Bank is hosting a Holiday Bowl blood drive during a time of year when donations are typically low. The drive will be held Thursday, November 21 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the SDCCU Stadium parking lot, sections A and B. Donors are encouraged to make an appointment ahead of time, but walk-ins are also welcome. The blood bank says they hope to get several hundred people to donate, because the winter is always a slow time."People get busy, they go on vacation, and blood donation kind of falls off as a top priority," says Blood Bank CEO David Wellis. "The need for blood, though, doesn't decline.The blood bank likes to have a 4-7 day supply on hand. Right now, Wellis says they have about 2 days. But when the Chargers left San Diego after 2016, they took the blood drive with them.In 2017, the blood bank tried a sports-themed event called "San Diego Cares" to get donations. 700 people gave blood that day.By contrast, the Chargers Blood Drive would get anywhere from 800-2,000 donors.The blood bank hopes offering free Holiday Bowl tickets will help build this event to the same level of success."I think, over time, it will," says Willis. "We've done Comic-Con for 43 years. That started off small and it's giant now. And in the summer we have the annual Padres blood drive that's growing quite nicely."Games and giveaways will also be set up throughout the day. To be eligible to donate blood, participants must be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 114 pounds. Donors must also be in general good health.
