SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the government shutdown approaches its third week, San Diego’s food stamp recipients are preparing for possible changes to their benefits. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps, helps feed roughly 40 million Americans. According to the USDA, eligible recipients are guaranteed benefits through January. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is expected to make a statement this week on SNAP funding into February, according to San Diego Hunger Coalition spokesman Joseph Shumate, citing the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP).Any SNAP adjustments could also increase the burden on San Diego charities. Many Feeding San Diego beneficiaries also rely on SNAP to help their families, the organization said."For every one meal we do, the SNAP program does 12 meals," said Feeding San Diego CEO, Vince Hall. "That is a 12 to 1 ratio, so any cut to SNAP is going to have dramatic effects on charities already struggling to keep up with the demand, the unmet need for food across our communities."Hall says they are preparing for worst-case scenarios, like the shutdown continuing for weeks or months. According to CBPP, the USDA may rule that the only appropriation available for SNAP after January is the program’s billion “contingency reserve,” which was made available through the fiscal year 2018 appropriations act. But SNAP benefits currently amount to about .8 billion a month, so the billion reserve cannot fully fund February benefits.Other feeding programs, including WIC, which provides food aid and nutrition counseling for pregnant women, new mothers and children, and food distribution programs on Indian reservations, will continue on a local level, but additional federal funding won't be provided. School lunch programs will continue through February. The shutdown started Dec. 21. About 420,000 federal employees are working without pay, while 380,000 are being forced to stay home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border Patrol is gearing up for what they anticipate to be a busy summer of illegal border crossings. The agency showcased its tools and tactics Tuesday at a site near the former border wall prototypes. Five migrants suspected of crossing illegally were rescued by Border Patrol several miles east of where the demonstration was occurring in the Otay mountains. Border Patrol says a member of the group called 911 early Tuesday morning after they ran out of food and water. One of the people from the group had to be airlifted because of a leg injury. Customs and Border Protection says they detain 170 people a day trying to illegal cross the border in San Diego sector. CBP adds with more the secondary wall project being completed, people are crossing in more remote areas and putting themselves in more dangerous situations. “A lot of the people we’re encountering are surrendering themselves agents,” said Justin Castrejon with Border Patrol. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – County leaders Wednesday approved a plan that would allow San Diego businesses such as gyms and local places of worship to operate outdoors at county parks.The new initiative gives businesses another option as they look to operate amid the coronavirus pandemic. Last month, the state implemented restrictions that forced many businesses to either close completely or move outdoors.Under the plan, space at any of the county’s 30 parks could be used for service via a free permit.“We need to be creative and provide a lot of flexibility, particularly to churches, places of worship, gyms, and other fitness-oriented businesses,” said County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who proposed the plan.Jacob said of the process to obtain permits: “I’m asking the county to streamline the process so it’s a very quick turnaround.”She added the process is similar to Poway’s, a city with a similar plan already in place.San Diegan Joel Nevarez visits San Diego’s Waterfront Park off Harbor Drive every morning for his workout because he enjoys it and the park was one of his only options."Getting some sunlight is good for you. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California roads have some of the worst drivers in the entire country, according to a new ranking.Finance website SmartAsset reports that California ties with Missouri to take third on the list for states with the worst drivers.In order to rank states, the site looked at the percentage of drivers with insurance, the number of DUIs per driver, the average number of deaths per miles driven and how often residents Google terms like traffic ticket or speeding ticket.California ranked 12th for DUIs per thousand drivers and 11th for percentage of uninsured drivers. The Golden State also ranked 32nd for number of people killed per 100 million miles driven.It may give some comfort to know that California wasn’t ranked first.
