BEIJING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- China expressed its concerns Thursday about a Chinese coal ship that ran aground off the eastern coast of Australia.Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu told a regular press briefing China is paying close attention to the incident and has taken immediate action to deal with it.China is concerned an oil spill may pollute Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Jiang said, adding that the related shipping company and Australian authorities should enhance cooperation to appropriately address the issue.Jiang said China's embassy in Australia contacted local authorities and urged them to ensure the crew's safety.Australia has taken rescue measures in time, she said, noting that the body of the ship has been kept stable and the crew are safe. The Chinese-owned, 230m-long bulk coal carrier Shen Neng 1 ran aground about 70 km east of Great Keppel Island shortly after 05:00 p.m. local time on Saturday. BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhua) -- China needs more reasonable carbon emission quotas to buoy the nation's fast economic development amid the progressing industrialization and urbanization, said an official with the nation's top economic planner Sunday.Economic development is still a priority for China as it has to enable the 1.3 billion people to live decent lives, Su Wei, director of the climate change department of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said at the International Cooperative Conference on Green Economy and Climate Change. The "high carbon" characteristic rooted in Chins's energy structure would not be fundamentally changed in a short term as the development and use of clean energy such as wind and solar power started late in China, he said.Unreasonable industrial structure and relatively backward industry technology also made China's carbon emission reduction drive difficult , said Su.But he also said China has stepped up efforts to curb carbon emission since it vowed in last November to reduce the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent compared with 2005 levels.

BEIJING, May 29 -- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has called on Asian economies to strengthen their infrastructure investment through an effective financing framework to achieve higher and more sustainable growth. To that end, the bank said that as much as 0 billion would have to be invested annually in infrastructure across the region from 2010 to 2020. This means that around .25 trillion would be invested in that period in national and cross-regional infrastructure projects."In view of Asia's enormous untapped economic potential and the global financial crisis, now is the time to build efficient and seamless connections across Asia and with the rest of the world for a more competitive, prosperous and integrated region," said Masahiro Kawai, dean and CEO of the ADB Institute.A man working at the construction site of a railway line in Hainan province. The required infrastructure investment in the next 10 years is expected to produce income gains of about trillion across Asia.To meet the financing needs, the region could build an effective framework to mobilize its vast domestic savings as the main source, while encouraging private financing and participation involving public-private partnerships through "bankable" projects, said Kawai. He also suggested the strengthening of national and regional local currency bond markets, notably through the Chiang Mai Initiative, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations + 3 bond market initiative, and the Asian Bond Fund.
