ENCINITAS, Calif., (KGTV)— It has been almost three weeks since a fire destroyed several small shops in Encinitas. One of the business owners who lost it all is now getting a lot of support from his local community. In a blink of an eye, Greg Cali's life work was destroyed."One thing's for sure, it's been the most stressful period of my life," Cali said. His gallery was called "The Cali Life." It featured works by Cali and several other local artists. The blaze on September 30, 2019, burned it all to the ground. All except for one thing."The sign up over the building was the only thing I got," Cali said.That sign now has a new home inside of Pandora's Pizza restaurant."Art and pizza. Those are two of my favorite things on earth," he laughed. Two days before the fire, Cali sent out invitations to his gallery's one-year anniversary party. But with no gallery and no salvageable artwork, it was going to be canceled. That was, until Craig Leslie, Pandora's Pizza owner, reached out. Some of Cali's artwork was already hanging inside Pandora's Pizza, so Leslie offered to host the gallery party at the restaurant, located just two blocks away. "We're here to support him," Leslie said. "We're here to support other artists in the community. Let us know what you need, and I mean, we have a lot of walls!"Cali spent the last three weeks printing his collection, getting new pieces and organizing a silent auction. Instead of drowning himself in sorrow, he said his community is showering him with hope. Leslie even told Cali that he could use his upstairs loft as his gallery until he gets back on his feet. "My future, it looks really bright," Cali said. "There are ups and downs for sure, but I am 100 percent sure that you can turn bad things into positives. ESTERO, Fla. — A Florida man saved his dog from certain death after he wrestled an alligator that snatched the puppy and dragged the pooch into a pond."He just came out like a missile," 74-year-old Richard Wilbanks of Estero said of the gator that attacked Gunner, his cavalier King Charles spaniel.Wilbanks jumped into the water, pried open the gator's mouth and freed Gunner from the gator's jaws.The rescue was caught on camera by the Florida Wildlife Federation.Wilbanks told CNN that his hands were "just chewed up," but Gunner is doing OK."We live on a shared landscape," Florida Wildlife Federation spokeswoman Meredith Budd told WINK-TV in Fort Myers. ENCINITAS (CNS) - A woman is dead today after being struck and killed by a vehicle in Encinitas, authorities said.At 8 p.m. Saturday, the victim, in her 50s, was hit by a vehicle traveling northbound on the 2600 block of South Coast (101) Highway, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.``The driver of the involved vehicle stopped immediately and remained at the scene of the collision,'' said Sgt. Jeffrey Houser, with the NorthCoastal Station. ``The driver and nearby bystanders rendered medical aid to the injured pedestrian.''The pedestrian was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.Drugs or alcohol are not suspected to be factors in the collision. The driver is cooperating with investigators, according to the sheriff's department.Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call the department at 858-565-5200. 882

Facebook has come under fire for a "barbaric use of technology" that allowed the sale of a child bride to be held on its site.An auction was held on the social media platform for a 16-year-old girl in South Sudan which sought payment for her hand in marriage.Facebook said the post was taken down as soon as the company learned of it, but that wasn't until after the girl was married.According to children's rights organization Plan International, the girl was bid on by five men, some of whom were reportedly high-ranking South Sudanese government officials.Activists are concerned that this auction -- for which the father reportedly received 500 cows, three cars and ,000 in exchange for his daughter -- could inspire other families to use social media sites to receive larger payments.Plan International's country director in South Sudan, George Otim, said: "That a girl could be sold for marriage on the world's biggest social networking site in this day and age is beyond belief."He added: "This barbaric use of technology is reminiscent of latter-day slave markets." 1084
