SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A human smuggler reportedly used two children as decoys by dropping them over the border into concertina wire, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. CBP reports that two Salvadoran girls, ages six and nine, were dropped roughly eight feet from the San Diego border behind concertina wire late Monday night. “Agents responded and moments later, a group of 10 individuals crossed the border in the area agents vacated,” said Rodney Scott, Chief Patrol Agent for the U.S. Border Patrol. Scott said on social media that the group eluded capture. The two young girls were given medical attention for what CBP called minor injuries. The agency is working with the consulate in El Salvador to locate the girls’ parents, the agency said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A newly discovered comet flew past Earth early on Saturday, giving those who awoke early enough to catch it quite a show.Comet Neowise was spotted by a NASA telescope by the same name on March 27, according to NASA. Since then, the space agency says the comet has been spotted by several NASA spacecraft, including Parker Solar Probe, NASA’s Solar and Terrestrial Relations Observatory, the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, and astronauts aboard the International Space Station.NASA says the comet came within Mercury's orbit on July 3, where the sun caused dust and gas to burn off its surface and create an even bigger debris trail.Neowise, which measures about three miles across, will be visible in Earth's Northern Hemisphere until mid-August, when it will change course and head toward the outer solar system, NASA says.For the next few days, the comet will be visible about an hour before sunrise in the northeastern sky in the U.S., NASA adds. Depending on local conditions, Neowise may be visible shortly after sunset on July 11 or July 12."In its discovery images, Comet Neowise appeared as a glowing, fuzzy dot moving across the sky even when it was still pretty far away," said Amy Mainzer, Neowise principal investigator at the University of Arizona. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A person fell at least 14 feet down an elevator shaft at a downtown property Tuesday.The person was reportedly working at the property at 625 Broadway when the fall occurred.San Diego Fire Department's Urban Search and Rescue team responded, hoisting the worker out and transporting the person to a nearby hospital.The worker had injuries to their leg but they were conscious and believed to be okay.No further information was immediately available. 476

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local sailor got an emotional holiday surprise thanks to the generosity of some frequent fliers.Navy diesel mechanic Joe Ramsay just learned his brother is flying in for the holidays."Don't really have the words to describe it," said Ramsay.Ramsay has been stationed in San Diego for more than two years. After hernia surgery this summer, his finances got stretched. There would be no trip home to North Carolina for the holidays."I was going to spend it with friends or alone. That was pretty much my plans," said Ramsay.That wasn't the plan for Ramsay's brother Trey, who entered a contest put on by New York entrepreneur Peter Shankman. The businessman decided to collect and donate hundreds of thousands of airline miles in hopes of reuniting families."Just wanted to get to my brother for the holidays. I haven't seen him in a year or so," said Trey Ramsay.In his entry, Trey called his brother "the closest person in my life," adding the family hasn't been able to visit Joe since he arrived in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report shows that the San Diego Unified School District in 2017 saw significant grade-level gains in reading and math scores.The program, called the National Assessment of Education Progress, or NAEP, shows that San Diego is the only large urban district in the nation to see significant test score increases in fourth-grade reading and math.San Diego Unified also performed significantly higher than public schools in large cities in both fourth and eighth-grade math and reading.The 2017 results mitigate a significant score drop in fourth-grade math in 2015, which the district says is due to the implementation of Common Core.The district said Tuesday that long-term data shows a generally upward trend overall.“San Diego Unified stands out as a hub of academic excellence and innovation, where students learn and thrive thanks to the dedication of our teachers,” said Superintendent Cindy Marten. “The NAEP results underscore the incredible teaching and learning that’s occurring in San Diego Unified schools every day.” 1064
