TEMECULA, Calif. (KGTV) - U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a man Sunday on suspicion of smuggling more than 143 pounds of methamphetamine on Interstate 15 in Temecula. Agents pulled over the Ford F-150 near the Border Patrol checkpoint at 9:15 p.m. A K-9 unit alerted agents during an exterior search. A secondary inspection led to the discovery of 33 bundles of meth inside the wood paneling, officials said. The drugs had an estimated street value of 0,640. The driver, a 55-year-old U.S. citizen, was arrested at the scene. 539

TAMPA, Fla. — A kitten in Florida is recovering after being stabbed in the face with a dart.Jennifer Tate volunteers with the St. Francis Society Animal Rescue and she can’t wait to bring home the kitten.“We saved a cat about two and half years ago that had been shot with an arrow and we named him Sir Robin. So, we thought it would be appropriate to name her Maid Marian, the love interest of Sir Robin Hood," said Tate.Hillsborough County Animal Services is trying to find out who’s responsible for hurting the cat.“The person that found her said she could not open her mouth, so it had pierced all the way through and actually into part of her throat," Tate said.Someone found the kitten on Aimiee Court, south of Bearss Avenue in Tampa.“It’s horrific. How does somebody walk up to a cat and jam something into her face? And walk away. How do you sleep at night," said Tate.If Maid Marian is ready, she’ll have surgery Friday at Gulf Coast Veterinary Center.Tate will foster her, but eventually, the hope is the kitten will be adopted.“We want her to have the best life and to be able to put this behind her. And we want to catch the person who did it so we can stop him from hurting more cats," she said.Authorities are asking anyone with information to call Hillsborough County Animal Services at 813-744-5660.If anyone wants to help with Maid Marian's care, St. Francis Society Animal Rescue accepts donations at https://stfrancisrescue.org/This story was originally published by Erik Waxler at WFTS. 1515

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Millions of Americans have now gone weeks without increased federal unemployment insurance benefits as Congress continues to weigh replacement options."Every day we wait, another Floridian gets closer to eviction, closer to homelessness and people's lives are really on the line," Florida State Rep. Anna Eskamani (D-Orange County) said.An executive order signed by President Donald Trump aims to give unemployed Americans 0 a week, but states would need to provide a quarter of that money. On top of that, it's unclear if Trump's decision to pull billion in federal money from FEMA is even legal, as the power of the purse constitutionally falls under Congress. With the legality of the order up in the air, some Republican state governors, like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, are hesitant to adopt the policy."There's only so much you can do through executive action," Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said. "We're now at a point where the President is just doing that, but I want to make sure there's no legal risk for us if someone were to challenge this, then we'd be left on the hook."The concerns haven't stopped Iowa, New Mexico, Arizona and Louisiana from applying, according to a tweet from Trump. South Dakota has reportedly declined to take up the plan."I think there's a lot of red flags on the President's executive order despite the fact that we all desperately need to see this increase in dollars," Eskamani said.DeSantis told reporters during a press conference that they are considering taking out a loan through the Department of Labor to raise the weekly benefit amount for Floridians. It's a compromise Eskamani says state lawmakers are interested in making, but also wishes Congress would strike a deal first."The best-case scenario would be Congress reconvening to come up with a solution and make that compromise, even if it means putting other issues on the table to figure out the unemployment piece," Eskamani said. "This should be a moment of no partisanship. This should be a moment of just figuring out what is the best way to help Florida."It's unclear how quickly the application process through FEMA works and when states will begin receiving the extra 0 in federal money per week. The Department of Labor issued guidelines for states on how to apply. This story was originally published by Heather Leigh on WFTS in Tampa, Florida. 2389

Texas health officials say new cases of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 have hit a new peak. According to the Johns Hopkins website, the state recorded 1,010,364 cases early Wednesday with 19,337 deaths since the pandemic began in early March.Texas recorded 10,865 coronavirus cases on Tuesday, setting a new daily record that surpassed by 74 cases an old mark set July 15, state officials said.According to state figures on Tuesday, an estimated 132,146 cases are active, the most since Aug. 17, and 6,170 COVID-19 cases are hospitalized, the most since Aug. 18.The true number of infections is likely higher because many people haven’t been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected and not feel sick. There were 94 new deaths Tuesday, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.Meanwhile, cases of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 are surging in the Laredo area as the borderlands remained a COVID-19 hotbed Tuesday, health officials said.Laredo health officials reported 331 new cases Tuesday of the coronavirus, the most since the Aug. 10 peak of 374 cases. That brought the area’s case count for the pandemic since the beginning of March to 16,558. Of those, 934 cases are active, the most in two months, and 73 require hospitalization. One new death was reported Tuesday, bringing the city’s COVID-19 death toll to 367.The surge comes as El Paso, another border city, grapples with a recent tsunami of cases. Another 1,292 cases were reported in El Paso County on Tuesday, bringing its pandemic count to 65,651 with 27,895 cases now active and 1,076 requiring hospitalization. Nine new deaths brought the county’s COVID-19 death toll to 682.The higher counts come amid intensive testing in both places and statewide. For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and a cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death. 2034
