As Major League Baseball threw out the first pitch Thursday night, MLB announced that the player’s association and league have agreed to a 16-team playoff for this season only. This expands it from the normal 10 teams. The decision makes it possible, if not likely, that teams with losing records will reach the postseason. Sixteen of the 30 teams will advance to a best-of-three first round. MLB agreed to guarantee a postseason pool that would be million if the entire postseason is played. The pool usually comprises ticket money, but baseball anticipates playing the entire year in empty ballparks due to the coronavirus.Details about how the playoff match-ups would be decided is still being discussed, according to media reports. There is a proposal being considered, according to ESPN, that some of the playoff teams could pick their opponents. On Thursday, baseball fans will get to watch Washington Nationals host the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the San Francisco Giants. The other 26 teams will start their seasons on Friday. This season will only be 60 games, down dramatically from normal years.Another change due to the pandemic includes a COVID-19 inactive roster in addition to the injured roster. There is no set amount of time a player must remain out if they test positive for COVID-19.Find more information about the 2020 season here. 1388

Amy Andrle and her husband grow and sell recreational marijuana at their Denver dispensary L'Eagle."We're a true mom-and-pop shop,” Andrle says. “We have everything riding on this."This year, Colorado marijuana sales already passed billion. But it’s a valuable industry that comes with a lot of rules. "On any given day, you could be subject to people stopping in to see how you're conducting your business," the owner says.State and local governments keep a close eye on the industry. As it evolves, the regulations constantly change. With marijuana on ballots again in the upcoming election, Andrle hopes the "green rush" that hit Colorado continues to spread. “I think there's going to be an anti-federal prohibition at some point,” Andrle says. “I think consumers deserve that. They all should have a right to the same medicine if you look at it from a strict medicinal standpoint there are so many benefits that come to it. Why shouldn't every state have that?"Michigan and North Dakota are voting whether or not to legalize it in the upcoming election. Recreational use is already legal in nine states, as well as in Washington D.C. 1169

As coronavirus cases continue to spread among contacts of President Donald Trump, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany became the latest official on Monday to announce that she had contracted the coronavirus. She joined a growing list of officials who have been near the president in recent weeks to test positive for the virus. Their diagnoses come as Trump announced he was infected with the coronavirus early last Friday. Here is a list of confirmed coronavirus cases among Trump contacts:White House aide Hope HicksFirst lady Melania TrumpSen. Mike Lee, R-UtahSen. Thom Tillis, R-North CarolinaSen. Ron Johnson, R-WisconsinFormer NJ Gov. Chris ChristieRNC chair Ronna McDanielPress secretary Kayleigh McEnanyBodyman Nick LunaNotre Dame President John I. JenkinsFormer White House adviser Kellyanne ConwayAide and speechwriter Stephen MillerWhite House Correspondents Association President Zeke Miller confirmed that three unnamed members of the White House press corps were also infected with the coronavirus.Christie said he checked himself into a hospital on Saturday as a precaution due to his medical history. Many of the infected contacts of Trump attended a September 26 ceremony where the president nominated Amy Coney Barrett for Supreme Court Justice. The majority of those in attendance did not wear masks and sat shoulder to shoulder, despite CDC guidelines. The CDC says those who have contracted the coronavirus must isolate for 10 days, and those who have been in close contact with COVID-19 patients must quarantine for 14 days. With three Republican Senators coming down with the virus, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that the Senate will take next week off, and will return on October 19 instead. Meanwhile, confirmation hearings for Barrett are expected to begin next week as originally planned. Once any of the three infected senators return to the Senate, the GOP will have enough votes to confirm Barrett. 1955

As COVID-19 cases continue to climb across Arizona, so too are the number of people lost to the novel coronavirus. Many Arizonans wonder if the state reopened too soon. From the moment casinos across the state opened their doors, thousands lined up to get through them. Now, the family of an employee at The Lone Butte Gila River Casino says reopening cost their father his life."It feels like a bad dream that I want to wake up from, but I can't," said Shawne Jackson, fighting through tears.Jackson is mourning the loss of her father, Robert Washington Jr. The patriarch of their family and her hero. The pain they feel now has influenced them to take a stand."I don't believe he was comfortable returning to work. He was very concerned," said Jackson.Washington was 68, a diabetic and had just recently beat prostate cancer. In May, when casinos were given the green light to open by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, Washington, a security guard for Gila River Casino Lone Butte in Chandler, was called back to work."He was tested prior to going back, and from what I understand, he tested negative," said Jackson. She says her father had a strong work ethic and financially needed to return to work. As someone with preexisting conditions, his family says he was told he could drive a golf cart around the perimeter of the casino and have limited interaction with customers. Still, they say he was posted at the door instead. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 five days later. Symptoms began appearing shortly after. He was hospitalized and later died on June 11.His relatives aren't the only ones to come forward regarding the safety inside Gila River casinos.KNXV has received multiple emails from other employees saying people continue to get sick and managers are keeping others in the dark regarding positive tests.Pointing out a cavalier attitude towards masks by customers, Jackson believes that starts at the top with the governor."They're looking to you to lead by example, and when you tell them that it's okay to not mask up, that's sad, that's a tragedy because you're putting innocent people in harm's way," said Jackson. However, just last Thursday, Gov. Ducey publicly said masks should be worn if social distancing is a problem, but did not mandate the use of them.Gila River instituted several precautions before opening, saying they would only operate at 50% capacity, provide masks and install Plexiglas barriers near slot machines. Jackson says she doesn't believe it's been strenuously enforced. She's now making sure her dad doesn't become just another number."Just like you value your life, value the life of that other person and take it seriously," said Jackson.Gila River Casinos issued this statement to KNXV: 2733
