Airbnb announced new rules for New Year's Eve to prevent parties and large gatherings at its properties amid a surge in coronavirus cases.The vacation rental company released its plan on Thursday to limit rentals in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Australia, France, and Spain.The new measures state that Airbnb would require guests who don't have a positive review history to book a minimum of two nights for any stay, including Dec. 31. Any guests with reservations on Dec. 31 must swear that they will not throw a party under threat of legal charges.The company said that guests who have a history of positive reviews on Airbnb would not be subject to this restriction.The company said it would allow already-booked one-night reservations to continue as planned since their "data has historically shown that one-night New Year’s Eve bookings made prior to now very rarely lead to unauthorized parties." 936

A week ago, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said on behalf of the Trump administration that talks of direct payments to Americans were dead as part of another round of economic stimulus.But now, it appears, there is some backtracking as Congress and the White House work to come to some agreement over the details of another round of stimulus.According to the Associated Press, Mnuchin has reached out to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi proposing 0 direct payments to Americans as part of the stimulus package. The amount is half of what was given to most Americans during the spring in the wake of mass economic shutdowns tied to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.Last week, both President Donald Trump and President-elect Joe Biden offered their support of a 0 billion stimulus plan hatched between a bipartisan group of moderate senators. Trump said last week he would sign the bill if it passes through Congress. However for Americans hoping to see a second stimulus check, this bill comes short on that aspect.The bill would provide 0 in additional unemployment benefits for up to 18 weeks. The legislation also would replenish funds for the Paycheck Protection Program and for small businesses to help make payroll as a number of companies are being forced to close to help combat the spread of the coronavirus. The current proposal calls for 8 billion to go toward support for small businesses.There would also be 0 billion earmarked for state and local governments, which have seen a drop in tax revenue due to the pandemic. There is in additional billion allocated toward the transportation industry, most notably for airlines, which have seen an over 50% reduction in business since March.While Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said last week that a compromise is within reach, he said Tuesday that he opposes funds for state and local governments. He proposed Tuesday dropping funds for state and local governments in exchange for dropping litigation protection against businesses. Democrats have opposed pandemic-related litigation protection for businesses.“My view and I think it’s the view shared by literally everybody on both sides of the aisle, we can’t leave without doing a COVID bill,” McConnell said earlier in the day. “The country needs it. We have an agreement that we need to do this. You’ve been following the discussions back and forth about how to put the package together, it remains my view that we ought to pass what we can agree on and I think that’s a pretty broad area that includes PPP, vaccine delivery, additional assistance to healthcare providers and a variety of other things that are not controversial.Following Pelosi’s conversation with Mnuchin, she and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer issued a joint statement expressing concern that Trump’s proposal would disrupt the progress made in reaching a compromise.“While it is progress that Leader McConnell has signed off on a 6 billion offer that is based off of the bipartisan framework, the President’s proposal must not be allowed to obstruct the bipartisan Congressional talks that are underway,” the two Democratic leaders said in a statement. “Members of the House and Senate have been engaged in good-faith negotiations and continue to make progress. After spending 23 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, Nevest Coleman is back at work with the Chicago White Sox.Coleman, then a 25-year-old groundskeeper with the White Sox, was convicted of the 1994 rape and murder of a Chicago woman and sentenced to life in prison without parole.He was freed last year after DNA found on the victim was linked to a serial rapist.Friends and family contacted the White Sox after his release to help him get his old job back, CNN affiliate WGN reported.The team said it was grateful that "justice has been carried out for Nevest" and said they were happy to welcome him back to the team as one of its groundskeepers.Coleman told WGN that he watched Sox games while he was in prison and would see his former colleagues scramble to protect the field during rain delays.Two of his friends who are still on the grounds crew were there to greet him with big hugs on Monday morning when he arrived for his first day back on the job.He was issued a new uniform and hat. For some families, the pandemic added even more waiting time as countries shut down.However, as travel opens back up, agencies are finding ways to help families complete their adoptions, like the adoption of Maria Camila in Colombia.“For most of the summer, we were waiting for just word we were able to travel to Columbia. Just waiting for them to open up,” Seth Christensen said. Seth and Gwen Christensen live in the U.S. with their three children. They started the process of adopting another child years ago, and just this October, they were able to travel to Colombia and bring her home.“That was a stressful time but we made it. We made it to Columbia,” Gwen said.We interviewed Seth and Gwen back in May, right after they went to Colombia for two weeks in March to adopt Maria Camila. However, they had to return to the U.S. without her due to COVID-19 and government closures.“Everything was just going swimmingly until, sorry they shut down all the courts in the whole country,” they explained back in May. “We had to send her back to her group home and it was awful. But she was old enough, she kind of understood, we cried and she was like OK.”So they waited, talking with their adopted daughter over FaceTime all summer until October, when they were invited back into Colombia to complete the process.“It was a complete do over. All the fees, all the appeals, everything,” Gwen explained. “But we got through faster than some families did.”“There were so many parents going through the system at that point than is normal that everyone was just overwhelmed,” Seth said about their most recent experience in the country. Due to the delay time, many families took the first chance they could get to return and finish adoptions.Seth and Gwen spent a month in Colombia, finalizing documents to bring Maria Camila back to the U.S. It's a process Gwen said usually would take less than three weeks, but for them took two separate trips.“There has been a backlog on the travel piece,” said Hollen Frazier, President at All God's Children International. The agency facilitates adoptions from a number of countries, including the adoption of Maria Camila. While the process is slower right now due to countries catching up, quarantine periods and other processes, she said adopted kids from most countries are finally getting home.“In the last six months we’ve seen kids come home from Bulgaria, Haiti, Columbia,” she said. Except for those from China. “All of our families from China, they’re all still stuck. Completely stuck,” Frazier explained.Most countries are finding ways to complete the adoption process safely after many were put on hold all summer. “Because there were so many other families around it definitely helps to kind of see other people in the same situation,” Seth said.After a long wait, Maria Camila now lives in the U.S. with her new siblings. “They’ve been excited to meet her and play with her and introduce her to things,” Seth said.The 12-year-old 6th grader started school this month. “She just started online school this week and that’s an adventure,” Gwen said. 3159
