BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The energy intensity of China's centrally-administered state-owned enterprises fell close to government targets from 2005 to 2009, a senior SOE administrator said Monday.The level of energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of output value was down 15.1 percent over the five-year period, said Li Rongrong, director of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC).Combined investment in energy-efficient and emissions reduction projects by centrally-administrated SOEs totaled 87.84 billion yuan (12.9 billion U.S. dollars) in 2009, said Li.This helped reduce sulfur dioxide emissions per 10,000 yuan of output value by 36.8 percent and chemical oxygen demand by 33 percent compared with 2005 levels, said Li.Enterprises executives who performed poorly in promoting energy conservation and emissions reductions, would be held for responsible by the SASAC, said Li.But he did not explain what would be considered a "poor" performance nor what penalties would be enforced.Under China's 11th five-year plan (2006-2010), the centrally-administered SOEs are expected to reduce energy intensity by 20 percent by the end of 2010 from 2005.By the end of 2009, China had 131 centrally-administered SOEs, many of them leading companies in highly polluting industries, including petrochemicals, steel, power generation, and non-ferrous metals industries.

XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 5 (Xinhua) –- Nine miners trapped under the flooded Wangjialing coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province were taken out of the shaft Monday morning miraculously to safety, after 179 hours underground.The survivors were immediately sent to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Their blood pressure and heart rates remained normal after having being trapped in the shaft for one week.One of the survivors, named Li Guoyu, 38, had a lucid mind and told doctors that he comes from central China's Henan Province. BEIJING, June 4 (Xinhua) -- China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the top economic planner, refuted a report on Friday claiming China is facing stagflation risks, arguing the national economic growth might slow slightly but stagflation is not going to occur.The NDRC response followed the release of a domestic report that claimed rising inflation and slowing economic growth would lead to stagflation in China.The NDRC added that the report was inaccurate and likely to cause misunderstandings and confusion, according to a statement released on its website.The statement went on to say growth in China's gross domestic product (GDP) was likely to slow down this year because of a higher comparison base used in the second half of last year, but it would still be one of the world's strongest growth rates and should not be labeled as "stagflation".Further, the NDRC noted that the consumer price index (CPI), a major gauge of China's inflation, was likely to exceed the government's 3-percent growth target in several months, but "there is a foundation to achieve the full-year CPI target of 3 percent" as long as China continued improving macro-regulations, it said.The NDRC statement noted that China would see "stable and comparatively fast economic growth" and "a moderate consumer price increase" this year.China's GDP rose 11.9 percent from a year earlier during the first quarter of this year. The CPI increased 2.4 percent year on year in March while the growth for April accelerated to 2.8 percent, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).The NBS is scheduled to release May economic data, including the CPI, fixed asset investment and retail sales, on June 11.
