VANCOUVER, Aug 3 (Xinhua) -- As China advances its national strategy to reduce carbon and other emission from transportation, the collaboration between Canada's Westport Innovations Inc. and various alternative energy companies in China is expected to be even more, Nicholas Sonntag, president of Westport Asia, said recently.     Sonntag spoke highly of Westport's ongoing operations in China. "Westport has a very positive impression of our cooperation with partners and government officials in China," he told Xinhua in a written interview. "There have been challenges along the way but we have a full time office in Beijing with Chinese staff that has been critical to our strategic and tactical approach to all initiatives we have undertaken in China."     Westport Innovation Inc., a leading global supplier of engine and alternative fuel power technologies that allow large vehicle engines to operate on clean-burning fuels like natural gas or hydrogen, has set up two joint ventures in China. One is BTIC Westport Inc., which produces liquefied natural gas fuel tanks for vehicles, and another is Weichai Westport Inc., which develops advanced alternative fuel engines.     Sonntag, who is also the Westport's Executive Vice President of Corporate Development, suggested Westport's operations in China have benefited from the fact that China has attached growing importance to alternative energy solutions and sustainable development.     "The rapid growth of the Chinese economy has generated opportunities in a variety of sectors and alternative energy solutions to transport is one that has seen rapid growth due to the dramatically increased levels of air pollution resulting from urban development," he said. "This rapid development has certainly presented huge challenges to the policy makers in China."     He noted that despite some setbacks, the overall direction of China's strong growth "has been maintained in a manner that tries to aggressively address the many social, environmental and physical challenges being faced."     "The deep respect and commitment to sustainable development is seen at all levels," he added. "And progress is being made with new and creative policies which are being introduced regularly."     Sonntag has been active in international engineering and sustainable development for over 35 years, working as a senior executive for organizations -- corporate and non-profit -- in China, Canada, Sweden and Switzerland. He has spent nearly six years in China, first serving at CH2M HILL -- a global full-service engineering, procurement, construction and operations firm-- as the President of the company's operations in China and Hong Kong, and then as President of Westport Asia. He moved back from Beijing to Westport's headquarters in Vancouver only a few weeks ago.     He has witnessed the changes that China's reform and opening up have brought about. From his perspective, the most notable changes have been "in the areas of legal process in the establishment of new companies and the increased commitment to protect intellectual property."     He said the issues relating to intellectual property have long been a big concern for foreign companies hoping to develop business in China. "They have been important to our investments in China since without assurances on the legal and intellectual property elements of our business, our long term strategies would be unsustainable."     He said a high value on intellectual property has now been seen in China and Chinese partners have developed the awareness of protecting their own intellectual property, adding "their motivation is in line with our motivation."     As for the economic globalization, Sonntag described China's contribution as "immense." He said: "All aspects of our lives are directly or indirectly impacted by China's economic growth. This will undoubtedly continue for many years to come."     He said China has only recently fully understood the implications of its growth on the global economy and is now taking responsibility for the importance of that role. "This presents large opportunities for Chinese and international companies who are cooperating in specific sectors. "     For Westport, he expected the products that its joint ventures in China have manufactured would not only serve the Chinese market, but also the Asian and global markets. "As such many of the companies we currently think of as Chinese will become global players in the many industries and sectors in which they operate."

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales of consumer goods totaled 570 billion yuan (about 83.5 billion U.S. dollars) during the National Day holiday, with average daily sales up 18 percent compared with the same period of last year, the Ministry of Commerce said Friday.     Sales of household appliances soared during the eight-day holiday which started from Oct. 1. Among them, high-definition flat screen TV sets, digital cameras, side-by-side refrigerators and 3G mobile phones are consumers' favorites. In the case of Kaiyuan Mall in Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, sales of household appliances gained by 34.7 percent year on year. Customers are seen at a shopping mall in Shanghai, east China, Oct. 8, 2009    Jewelry and cars became hot sellers as well. The sales of jewelry of Caishikou Department Store in Beijing topped 100 million yuan, up 30 percent year on year. ISTANBUL, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- China on Sunday demanded an increase of the quota share of the emerging markets and developing countries in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and urged the organization to accelerate its structural reform. Chinese Deputy Governor of the Central Bank Yi Gang made the remarks at the 20th meeting of the International Monetary and Financial Committee of the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund in Istanbul.     The one-day meeting was attended by representatives from 186 member countries and international financial institutions, the World Bank, the World Trade Organization and other organizations.     The Chinese deputy governor criticized major international financial institution for failing to give a timely early warning report of the current global financial crisis, noting that the failure is closely related to deviation of the surveillance direction and its focus.     The long-time underestimation of the quota share of the emerging markets and developing countries and their insufficient representation in the IMF are major causes for irrational governing structure, unfair surveillance and untimely early warning system, he said. Attendees take part in the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) meeting at the Istanbul Congress Center October 4, 2009. The IMFC has 24 members who advise and report to the IMF Board of Governors. Finance ministers and central bankers from around the globe are in Istanbul for the semiannual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, which run from Oct. 4-7.    He said China supports an increase of IMF structural resources in various ways.     But he stressed that the quota share is the main resource of the IMF organization, urging the IMF to establish quota share automatic readjusting mechanism in a bid to reflect changes of economic positions of different countries.     China supports the IMF to undergo wide-ranging administrative structural reform, including the strengthening of responsibilities of the executive board of directors, effective supervision of the administration, reform of chairman election system and increasing the proportion of administrative and working staff of emerging markets and developing countries, he added.     Yi stressed that the IMF should strengthen supervision and surveillance over various major financial markets, synthetically think about various policies of member countries, and not to assess single policy in a simple and mechanical way.     He said China welcomes the progress made by the IMF in enhancing early warning capability, the whole package reform in financing mechanism to offer loan to low-income countries and preferential financing measures.     Istanbul is to host the annual meetings of the IMF and World Bank on Oct. 6-7.

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- A grand evening gala to celebrate New China's 60th founding anniversary started Thursday evening at the Tian'anmen Square when 60 birthday-candle-shaped fireworks exploded into the sky and lit up the vast square. Red, pink, white and orange fireworks shot up into the night sky, lighting up the Tian'anmen Rostrum and 56 giant decorative columns, which were set up on the square to represent China's 56 ethnic groups. Fireworks are seen in the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, on the Tian'anmen Square in Beijing, capital of China, Oct. 1, 2009    That was the beginning of a 33-minute fireworks feast in the evening. Earlier this month, the Beijing Daily quoted pyrotechnist Ding Zhenkuan as saying that the display would send nearly 42,000 shells into the sky, doubling the number fired at the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony last August.     Following candle-shaped fireworks, a teenage boy, standing at the podium for the flag-raising ceremony, played with a trumpet the melody of the song of "My motherland".     As the boy was playing the trumpet, more than 4,000 performers gathering under the podium began to play the magic effects of more than 4,000 LED-light-equipped trees.     Vice director of the gala, Zhao Dongming, called the performance as "light cube", referring to the well-known Olympic architecture "Water Cube", or the National Aquatics Center. The building, equipped with LED lights, can put on various colors at night.     The performers of the "light cube" displayed a rolling effect of the 60 years from 1949, when the People's Republic of China was founded, to 2009.
