UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday pledged to further assist the development of other developing countries when addressing the UN General Assembly during its the general debate.     "As a responsible and major developing country, China has always made common development an important aspect of its foreign policy," Hu said in his speech.     "We have made great efforts to provide support and assistance to other developing countries, and fulfilled our commitment under the UN Millennium Declaration," he said.     To further assist other developing countries, the Chinese president said, China will increase support for those hit hard by the global financial crisis, earnestly implement relevant capital increase and financing plans, intensify trade and investment cooperation and help raise their capacity for risk-resistance and sustainable development.     "China will continue to implement the measures announced at the UN High-level Event on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to assist other developing countries in speeding up development and facilitate the attainment of the MDGs," he added. The 64th session of the UN General Assembly kicked off its general debate on WednesdayOn China's assistance to Africa, Hu said, China will follow through on the measures announced at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, increase assistance to Africa, expand trade and investment, provide human resources and technological support for African countries in such areas as agriculture, health, education and disaster preparedness.     Hu also promised China's efforts to promote regional monetary and financial cooperation, maintain financial and economic stability and push forward financial cooperation and trade in the region.     He said China has so far provided assistance to more than 120 countries, canceled debts for 49 heavily-indebted poor countries and least developed countries, and extended zero-tariff treatment to commodities from over 40 least developed countries.     Hu noted that, since the outbreak of the global financial crisis, China has kept its currency's exchange rate basically stable, which helps maintain healthy international trade.     China has taken an active part in the trade finance program of the International Finance Corporation and provided financing support to the International Monetary Fund, which will be mainly used to help developing countries, Hu said.     "We have established the China-ASEAN Investment Fund, provided credit support to the members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and actively contributed to the building of an East Asian foreign currency reserve pool," he added.

Vice Premier Li Keqiang also attended the meeting.     The meeting discussed and passed a guideline on maintaining stable and fast economic growth in the western regions amid the global economic downturn.     The government would carry on with its policy to develop the western regions as the policy proved effective in boosting economic and social progresses there in the 10 years since its launch. Premier Wen Jiabao chaired a meeting of the leading group under the State Council for the development of China's western regions    More funds would be put into the areas for infrastructure construction including railways, roads, airports and water conservation projects.     The government would stress environmental protection in the areas and further promote the "grain for green project", a project to prevent sand storms and protect sources of the three key rivers that start in Qinghai Province.     China would make more efforts to upgrade the industrial structure in the western regions and boost industries with advantages there.     The government would speed up the development of social causes to improve people's livelihoods. It would work to add more job opportunities, improve people's living conditions and upgrade education and medical services.     The meeting also stressed efforts to help rebuild the areas destroyed by the strong earthquake in May 2008. SHANGHAI, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Serbian President Boris Tadic on Sunday visited China's economic powerhouse Shanghai, continuing his week-long visit to the country.     Accompanied by Wei Jinghua, China's ambassador to Serbia, Tadic arrived here Saturday evening from the ancient capital Xi'an in northwest China.     During his stay, Tadic visited the landmarks of Shanghai, such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Yuyuan Garden, a renowned traditional Chinese-style garden, and the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center, where the progress of and plans for the city's major projects are illustrated.  Serbian President Boris Tadic (1st R) looks at a Shanghai local dwelling during his visit at the Shanghai History Museum in Shanghai Municipality, east China, Aug. 23, 2009.    Tadic made the week-long visit as guest of his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao.

  

PHUKET, Thailand, July 23 (Xinhua) -- China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told reporters Thursday on the sidelines of the ASEAN meeting series that about the Korea Peninsula's nuclear issue, the UN Security Council's resolutions should be implemented and all sides should work hard to avoid escalation of tension.     "China's stand is very firm. We are working very hard for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and we are totally against nuclear proliferation...This issue, the nuclear issue, should be solved by peaceful means through diplomatic negotiation," Yang said.     Yang made the remark before he entered the venue for the 16th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), a top security forum in Asia which is held in the Thai southern island of Phuket on Thursday. They believe that this is the effective platform on which we can proceed to properly solve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula," he said.     Yang said a sooner restart of the six-party talks will "do everybody good".     "So one should take a long-term and strategic point of view, and work for the earlier resumption of the six-party talks. China stays in close touch with all the parties concerned, because this is a good cause, this is a very important cause," Yang said.
