MATYBULAK RANGE, Kazakhstan, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Ma Xiaotian, chief commander of the 1,000 Chinese troops taking part in the "Peace Mission 2010" in south Kazakhstan said Thursday that the ongoing military exercise of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is purely a strategic action against terrorism.MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO REGIONAL, WORLD PEACE"Peace Mission 2010" involves 5,000 troops from five of the six SCO member states -- China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan -- from Sept. 9 to 25. Uzbekistan is not taking part.The ongoing exericse never targets or constitutes a threat to any country, Ma emphasized.Ma, who is also deputy chief of the People's Liberation Army General Staff, said China's purpose in taking part in the military drills was the same as the previous six military exercises launched under the SCO framework."We aim to put in place a common understanding among SCO member states to further strengthen cooperation in various aspects, including national defense cooperation, maintaining regional security, peace and stability, and to show the resolution, willingness and capability of the SCO member states to fight the three evil forces of extremism, separatism and terrorism," Ma said.CHINA'S NEW EQUIPMENTMa said the Chinese weaponry used in the exercises were all new and by and large represented the latest development of Chinese troops' equipment.Ma said China had three goals in using the new equipment.Firstly, it showed China attached high importance to this joint exercise and defense cooperation among SCO member states, he said.Secondly, it indicated Chinese troops' determination, will and capability to strike terrorism.And thirdly, it promoted military transparency, Ma said.According to the Chinese general, the Chinese air troops were assembled home in Chinese territory and took part in the exercises by long-distance projection, which was the first time in the history of Chinese air forces.By contacting the troops of the other countries in the exercises, Chinese troops had also learned a lot of good practices and experiences, Ma said.JOINT DRILL ADVANCES SMOOTHLYMa said the massive joint drill had unfolded successfully at present.He said the troops had staged two joint training sessions with cooperation of command personnel and troops of all sides."The process of cooperation is also a process of mutual learning and understanding. XIAMEN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Second World Investment Forum (WIF), seeking to offer insights on the balance between investment and sustainable development, opened Tuesday in Xiamen, in southeast China's Fujian Province.With the theme "Investment for Sustainable Development," the forum is organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and has attracted more than 1,500 overseas investors, policymakers and international organization representatives."International investment is high on the agenda of global policy-making," United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said in a video message to the forum.Despite the recovery of worldwide capital flows since the downturn in 2009, Ban said, the recovery remained fragile and the consequences of climate change were "increasingly clear.""We must work together to advance responsible investment and corporate sustainability," said Ban.He urged governments and businesses to make investments that better stimulated economic activity while promoting energy efficiency and green technology.He stressed the critical role of private investment in the spread of environment friendly practices and in reaching the UN's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).Established in 2000, the MDGs are eight development goals to be achieved by 2015. BEIJING, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with the China Chamber of International Commerce (CCIC) said Wednesday the United States has launched the wrong probe at the wrong time into the policies and practices by China in its green technology sector, as now is the "best time" for bilateral cooperation in the sector.The denunciation of the 301 probe by Lin Shunjie, CCIC deputy secretary general, came after the U.S. government decided to initiate an investigation on Oct. 15 into China's policies and practices in the clean energy industry, acting upon a petition filed in September by the United Steelworkers union.The union claimed the massive subsidies and discriminatory policies by China were shutting U.S. businesses out of China's renewable energy market and causing job losses in the United States. These charges come amidst worries that U.S. protectionist measures against its trade partners might be on the rise due to its sluggish economic recovery.However, Lin Shunjie said government subsidies in the United States to protect its clean energy industry were more extensive than those in China, adding the United States should reevaluate its subsidy policies and to especially benefit small and medium-sized companies.Further, Lin suggested the U.S. government increase the channels of financing for these small-scale companies in order to improve their competence in trade, rather than accuse other countries."The competence of small and medium-sized renewable energy companies in the United States is far behind those in Europe, Japan, and even Australia," said Lin, "while the Chinese market is open and is willing to import more products from overseas."Lin added that China had a trade platform for imported goods exhibitions in Shanghai, but so far very few U.S. companies have reached deals. "The U.S. government has not done enough in helping its enterprises increase their exports."The next five to 10 years would be the period when China and the United States see technology transfers and heightened inter-dependence of markets, Lin said while attending a conference held in Beijing on Wednesday.
