SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Downtown several huge murals cover plywood boards that protect businesses shuttered during the pandemic, as they reopen, those murals are coming down."It was definitely, I don't know, surreal." The Tipsy Crow Director of Operations Nathan Colonero said it was surreal seeing a familiar place always packed with friends completely empty. As the pandemic wore on, Colonero noticed a change."You could slowly see the shadow work its way over downtown," Colonero said. Then he got a call from the Downtown San Diego Partnership."I said well we aren't looking to spend too much money right now while we're closed. He said, 'No no no, we just want to beautify downtown and put a whole different spin on it for anyone walking around." It was an idea he could get behind. The partnership recruited local artists, including Pandr Design Co., to paint seven murals downtown between April 27th and mid-May.Some had inspirational messages, like " Stay Strong" and "Things will be okay".Neighbors are loving it."It was exciting to see this art in the city," Two-year-resident MJ Hasoneh said."It was a very beautiful thing that they did and I'm grateful for that," Neighbor Juan Gonzalez said."Honestly it's so nice to see the artwork, obviously all these places have to be closed right now," Ali Calder said while walking her dog.Now that businesses are reopening, the artwork is coming down."I mean they were doing so much beautiful work on them, of course I'm glad that they're taking them down, but it was very good to see because it lifted a lot of people's spirits," Gonzalez said.Colonero shared the same sentiment, "it was kind of sad taking them down, but obviously very excited to open up have people look in and see all the renovations we've done."He and other downtown businesses hope to make up some of their losses during this trying time. The partnership is storing the murals for future use as temporary displays or if needed on other buildings. 1972

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Gas prices in Southern California continue to rise sharply as prices throughout the rest of the U.S. continue to fall. According to GasBuddy, the national average is down two cents, currently costing .65 per gallon. In California, the average as of Sunday is .98 per gallon and could hit by late Sunday or Monday, GasBuddy says. In San Diego County, the average price per gallon has increased by more than 40 cents over the last 13 days, AAA reports. The jolting increase in gas prices is a result of lower supplies caused by maintenance issues at several California refineries. The issues are reportedly affecting the Chevron and Marathon refineries in Los Angeles County at the same time. It's unclear when normal operations will resume. It's not easy to let people steal from you," said Ballo.Ballo says the three he saw are part of a ring of at least eight thieves that have stolen pricey liquor from the Vons store next door, repeatedly for the past six months. He says the same two women were recorded stealing from Vons this weekend. He admits his actions may not have been the smartest, but he has no regrets.RELATED: Gas thieves target Pacific Beach neighbors "When you work hard for a living, you have to defend yourself," said Ballo.Ballo says he suffered bruises around his eye and on his head. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Filipino cuisine has inserted itself into the conversation when it comes to the great food San Diego has to offer. 141

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - From a —risqué — galaxy far, far away comes a twist on "Star Wars" that could make a Stormtrooper blush."The Empire Strips Back - A Burlesque Parody" heads to San Diego's Spreckels Theater next month, featuring a unique (and obviously, 18 years or older) take on the iconic film franchise."Empire Strips Back" combines striptease, song, dance routines as burlesque dancers perform as Stormtroopers, Boba Fett, droids, and even Darth Vader and a Skywalker.SAN DIEGO THEATER: Shows coming to local theaters this year"We never stop developing the show — always trying to make it bigger and crazier, and, yes, reach the standard of quality of the films," show creator Russall Beattie says. "Everywhere we go, our fans are passionate and excited, and they deserve an unforgettable, fun night out."The word "burlesque" is derived from words meaning "parody" or "caricature," making Beattie's promise of "plenty of Aussie humor" all the more guaranteed. And of course, while taking clothes off is a part of the show, nudity is not — routines are still scantily-clad and provocative performances. The show started as a small production in 2011, only expected to run for a few nights as a one-off in Sydney, Australia. Those shows ended up selling out and igniting multiple sold-out tours around Australia. Now, Beattie is taking his burlesque-rival show overseas."The artistic direction guiding every Star Wars-inspired burlesque show has its' own personality, giving audiences the opportunity to appreciate different versions of the genre," Beattie says. 1612
