JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The GI Bill provides educational assistance to service members, veterans and their dependents.Rob Bannon of Jacksonville, Florida, is among the veterans who have used the government benefit to better their lives. Bannon runs a small business coaching and training golfers, both professionals and beginners. “I always had in my mind that I wanted to do something like this, but I wasn’t sure how it was going to work,” said Bannon. “That was the hard part.”Figuring that out became easier, in part, thanks to the GI Bill. Bannon spent 20 years in the army. He served in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, then as a part of the joint chiefs of staff in the Pentagon during September 11. After he committed to going to the Middle East, doing two tours in Iraq, the Post 9/11 GI bill, paid his tuition and part of his housing at the College of Golf at Kaiser University. “The schooling helped me not only on the technical side on how to teach and the golf swing, but the business of golf was a heavy influence in there,” said Bannon. He put the money he saved on tuition into his business and built the facility for TPG Golf. Essentially, the GI Bill helped Bannon build a new future, post service. And over the past 75 years, since the first version of the GI Bill was passed, it’s helped more than 18 million veterans do the same. “The burden that we placed on them mentally, how much we stress them in combat, what we ask of them. I think what we do for them when they come home, is a small price the country pays,” said Bannon. Bannon says it takes a special individual to get up every morning, walk out the door and leave their family, not known what’s to come.“It is just incredibly important that we look after all of our military and try to give them the support they need,” said Bannon. Although well-earned, Bannon says he’s grateful to have gotten that support through the GI Bill. 1929

That left some parents worried about whether their kids will still keep learning and be ready when school starts up again.Online platforms like Outschool are working to provide relief for them. It’s been nearly nine months since Hurricane Michael hit the Florida Panhandle. Though time has passed, those living in the remains of what Hurricane Michael left in its wake are struggling. Hurricane Michael was the first Category 5 Hurricane to strike the contiguous United States Since Andrew in 1992. According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Hurricane Michael caused nearly billion in damage. However, nearly nine months since the storm, there is still plenty of damage and debris in Panama City, Panama City Beach, and Mexico Beach, where Michael hit the hardest. According to a REBUILD 850 survey released Tuesday, public support for Hurricane Michael recovery efforts in the Florida Panhandle is lacking. The results showed nearly half of respondents would do nothing to help people affected by the hurricane and nearly 75 percent said they would not consider donating money to help with relief efforts. Some affected by the hurricane said this could be because those across the country mistakenly think life has gone back to normal in the panhandle. As the new hurricane season approaches, many residents across the panhandle are still trying to recover from the Category 5 storm. E.W. Scripps went to the panhandle and spoke with those who are still trying to get their living situation back to normal. Some say they may have to move back into a home they say isn’t safe since their temporary living situation will no longer work. Others are living in their homes that still have damage and no insulation, living where inside temperatures reach 93 degrees. Ann Marie Dimeglio has lived in Panama City Beach for 17 years with her husband and three kids. “There are so many people who have it far worse than I do,” Dimeglio says. “We are all trying to get by after the storm. It’s not the same. People were struggling before the hurricane, and now with everything that’s going on, it’s just getting worse. But we’re all just trying to fight through it. You’re not living if you’re not fighting. I think a lot of us here just want people to know that things aren’t fine here.
