SHENYANG, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has encouraged local governments and farmers in northeast China to expand grain production to stabilize the nation's food supply.Hui made the call during an inspection tour to Liaoning Province, a major rice-producing province in northeast China, from Friday to Saturday.The grain planting situation this summer is challenging as persistent cold weather since last winter has ravaged major production zones in the north.Hui said northeast China is a key rice production area. LOS ANGELES, June 4 (Xinhua) -- U.S.-China relations are improving on the back of their need for mutual support after undergoing a rocky period earlier this year, U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff said here Friday.The bilateral relationship came under pressure due to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, the ** Lama's U.S. visit and tensions in the Korean Peninsula, but the overall situation was good and the bilateral cooperation was at a very high level, the Democratic congressman from California told a Chinese press club luncheon.Schiff said he didn't think the current tensions on the Korean Peninsula would have a serious impact on U.S. relations with China.He said both countries needed each other's support in forums such as the six-party talks to resolve the issue of nuclear proliferation on the peninsular.The United States also needed China's cooperation in developing alternative and green energy. BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Tao Dayong, a well-known Chinese economist and also honorary vice chairman of the ninth Central Committee of China Democratic League (CDL), has died of illness at the age of 93.President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and other senior leaders, including Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang and Zhou Yongkang, expressed their condolences.Tao, a native of Shanghai, graduated in 1940 from the Department of Economics of the Nanjing-based Central University.He joined the China Democratic League in 1947 and became chief editor of the Economic Weekly, a magazine published by the Hong Kong-based Chinese language newspaper Wen Wei Po in 1949.Tao was a member of the sixth, seventh, and eighth National People's Congress Standing Committee and a member of the Standing Committee of the Sixth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
