SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family and supporters of Jonathan Coronel stood at the San Diego County Administration Center Friday, demanding justice for the past three years without their loved one.Coronel was shot 16 times by San Diego Sheriff's Deputy Christopher Villanueva in Vista July of 2017."It has been three years of trauma and dehumanization," Coronel's Cousin Rocio Zamora said.Zamora urged defunding the Sheriff's Department, and transferring that money to underserved communities, "to transform them to community empowerment zones. The safest communities don't have the most cops they have the most resources."She also demanded police officers be taken out of schools and replaced with counselors.These demands shouted at a time when law enforcement is under the microscope.Law enforcement said Coronel was a documented gang member with a warrant.The morning Coronel died law enforcement said he ran from deputies. Once Villanueva caught up to Coronel, law enforcement said Coronel concealed his hand in his shirt, forcing Villanueva to fire.A witness said Coronel took off his shirt to show he was unarmed.Law enforcement confirmed Coronel was unarmed at the time of his death."Deputy Christopher Villanueva is the most dangerous gang member in Vista. He is the one who shot Sergio Weick 28 plus times," Zamora said.Sergio Weick, 33, was shot and killed August of 2016 by Villanueva.Law enforcement said he was running from deputies, had knives, and threatened deputies, forcing Villanueva to shoot. Law enforcement said he was also a documented gang member with a warrant.Back on the steps of the county administration building, Zamora said they are not anywhere near ending their fight for justice, "three years and we are only growing bigger, we are only getting louder." 1787

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Double-check your tax refund. The county may something a little extra for your wallet.The San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office says they currently have 3,000 in unclaimed county refunds waiting to be reunited with their rightful owners.About 1,928 refunds sit on the countywide unclaimed money and unclaimed property tax refunds lists, according to the office. If the county thinks you're owed a refund, you may receive a postcard in the mail, according to San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister.“Most of the time, we’re collecting money from San Diegans,” said McAllister. “We love summer when we can give it back and put a little extra vacation cash in people’s pockets. I feel like Robin Hood.”Over the last five years, the office says it has refunded nearly 0,000 to residents.According to the county, the smallest refund amount available is and the largest refund amount is ,333.79, owed to the heirs of Mary Stone. "In the past, sadly, most refunds were never claimed," McAllister said. "So we’re trying a new strategy to let people know about this money. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Following a surge in 911 calls from COVID-19 patients, the County of San Diego is now allowing hospitals to divert ambulances if their emergency rooms are already too full. The County reports that the new protocol was tested last weekend and proved to be successful.The County reports that this new type of diversion goes above and beyond the routine ambulance diversion of only a subset of patients that hospitals use on a regular basis.Hospitals across San Diego that are saturated are now allowed to request total ambulance diversion, meaning ambulances have to stop bringing in more patients. A letter posted this Tuesday from the County's Director of Emergency Medical Services details how the new protocol will help area hospitals recover from the rapid influx of patients.According to the County, “Hospitals on County Ambulance Diversion only accept patients who are so critical that they cannot survive transport to another facility (e.g., cardiac arrest, breathing problems that cannot be managed in the ambulance); thus, nearly all basic and advanced life support (BLS and ALS) ambulances must bypass a hospital on County Ambulance Diversion.”The County reports that a hospital can only implement the diversion in 4-hour blocks which must be approved or initiated by the County.Rob Lawrence with the California Ambulance Association explained Wednesday that this type of diversion allows for decompression. “It allows [hospitals] to get a bit of time to process those patients that have already come into their emergency departments. It also means that ambulances aren't sitting in the parking areas for up to four hours with a patient on board.”He added that it also aids the ambulance services because they can then move patients to hospitals where the wait times are lower. “What that means is [that] they can then return to service quicker which is of course good for the next patient or person that's going to call 911,” he told ABC10 News.According to the County, the new diversion protocol has been implemented by local emergency departments several times over the past few days. 2123
