Gavin Newsom ordered thousands more body bags for distribution to morgues in three counties, including San Diego, state health authorities reported a new high for coronavirus-related deaths and cases.California recorded 53,711 new COVID-19 cases and 293 additional deaths on Wednesday. The state's previous high for deaths was set Saturday with 225.On Tuesday, Newsom ordered 5,000 body bags during a surge in deaths over the past week, averaging over 160 per day."This is a deadly disease, a deadly pandemic, and we're in the middle of it right now," Newsom said Tuesday. "We're near the end, but we're in the middle of the most acute peak as it relates to what we refer to as the third wave -- the third and what we hope is the final wave of this disease."Newsom also said that 60 refrigerated storage units are ready to be mobilized across California should hospitals become overwhelmed with virus fatalities."We just had to order 5,000 additional body bags ... and we just distributed them down to San Diego, Los Angeles, Inyo counties," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Coast Guard crewmember was injured after someone pointed a laser at a boat off the San Diego Coast Friday evening.According to the Coast Guard, the incident happened Friday around 6:30 p.m. off the coast of Ocean Beach.The crewmember was taken in for medical care after receiving eye injuries while aboard the Sea Otter, a 78-foot-long patrol boat.San Diego Police checked the nearby pier in Ocean Beach, but were unable to locate any suspects. 474

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two U.S. Navy service members were sentenced in San Diego federal court Friday for their roles in an insurance fraud scheme that involved making false medical claims to a military insurance program in exchange for unearned benefits.Ronald Olmsted, 48, of Mobile, Alabama, and Anthony Coco, 43, of San Diego, are among 11 defendants indicted for allegedly filing false claims to the Traumatic Servicemembers Group Life Insurance Program. Prosecutors say the scheme defrauded the program of nearly million total.Olmsted was sentenced to four months in prison, followed by four months of home detention, which will be served as part of three years of supervised release. Coco received four months of home detention to be served as part of three years of probation.The U.S. Attorney's Office said the scheme was led by co-defendant Christopher Toups, 43, of Woodstock, Georgia, a former Chief Petty Officer construction mechanic who allegedly recruited Olmsted, Coco and other service members to create and file fraudulent claims to the Traumatic Servicemembers Group Life Insurance Program -- or TSGLI -- which compensates service members who suffer serious, debilitating injuries while on active duty.Prosecutors say Toups ran the scheme with assistance from U.S. Navy Commander Dr. Michael Villarroel, the medical doctor for the unit where Toups worked, and Kelene Meyer, a former Navy nurse who Toups was married to during the time of the offenses.Olmsted claimed that he was injured in a 2011 rappelling accident and fell down a flight of stairs in 2012, which left him unable to care for himself or do basic tasks. He received 5,000 from the TSGLI, and prosecutors say he sent ,000 to Toups.Coco alleged he reported on medical forms that he broke both ankles in a fall that left him confined to a wheelchair. Ring video shows a man on his stomach, around 2 a.m. Saturday, in Curtis Both's driveway off Morena Boulevard. In his hand is Both's garage door opener."My car was ransacked. The remote was in the center console," said Both.The man in the video likely pushed the button for the garage, just slightly. "He wanted to peer in to see what was there," said Both.Moments later, the garage door is heard opening. The man then walks in, before eventually leaving. About two hours later, that man is back with a friend. A camera mounted inside the garage shows them collecting items from the garage."Horrible. A complete violation," said Both.Airsoft gear, ski equipment, power tools, a pricey road bike were among the items that would vanish.A week earlier, about a mile away, a man with a similar backpack and high socks was recorded putting down the backpack and getting on his knees to shine a flashlight at a garage door. Soon after, he's seen heading across the street. That light inside Matt Friend's SUV comes on. Tucked in the door panel is the garage remote. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 14-year-old girl is the first child to die from influenza this season in San Diego.The girl, who died on Feb. 12, had an underlying health condition, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency. She had contracted influenza A, also known as H1N1, the county says, and had not received this season's flu vaccine.“Pediatric influenza deaths are very unfortunate. Our condolences go out to the family,” said Wilma Wooten, County public health officer. “It is extremely important that people get vaccinated because influenza can be deadly.”The teen is one of five flu deaths reported last week, bringing the county's death toll this season to 35 people. The other deaths last week were four men —ages 82, 73, 62 and 56 — and all had underlying medical conditions. Only the 82-year-old and the 56-year-old had been vaccinated, the county says.At this time last season, there had been 268 deaths.“Influenza continues to be widespread. If you have not gotten a flu shot, do it now,” Wooten added.Last week, 539 lab-confirmed cases of influenza were reported, compares to 476 at the same time last season.
