SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The California Senate will vote this week on a bill to add a surcharge to utility bills, with the money going to pay for damages caused by wildfires.Governor Gavin Newsom says he wants the bill on his desk to sign by Friday before the legislature takes its summer break.According to the text of Assembly Bill 1054, each utility company would have to "collect a nonbypassable charge from its ratepayers to support the Wildfire Fund." That money would go to pay for damages from wildfires caused by utility companies.But the fund can only be used if the utility companies comply with state safety laws and regulations.The bill also requires each electric company to file a wildfire mitigation plan with the state every three years, and update it yearly.Critics say it's nothing more than a tax, passing the responsibility of wildfire damage away from the utility companies and onto rate-payers."This is going to be a tax that will go on, who knows how long," says Richard Rider from the San Diego Tax Fighters. We look forward to reaching a final agreement with the Governor and Legislature that meaningfully addresses the crisis posed by wildfires. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Friar Faithful won’t be able to attend games in Texas to cheer on their San Diego Padres, but fans can support the squad in this week’s National League Division Series games at Petco Park while in their cars.The Padres’ drive-in watch events will take place at Petco Park’s Tailgate Lot at 1301 K Street.The first game of the best-of-five series against the NL West rival Los Angeles Dodgers is set for Tuesday, Oct. 6. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., and the series will be played at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.Games will be shown on three separate large LED video screens, and fans who attend are encouraged to decorate their vehicles and don brown and gold in support of the team.Part of the drive-in experience includes dining options for four, a reusable bag with four rally towels, a car flag, and four hats.The team is reminding those who attend that health and safety measures will be in place, such as guests remaining in their vehicles unless they are visiting a retailer onsite or using a restroom.Face masks are required for all fans; the team says all staff members at the event will be wearing masks and conducting routine cleaning.There will be 20 feet of space between vehicles to promote more social distancing.Jaclyn Lash, the Padres’ Vice President of Special Events, said, “We’re still in a pandemic, we did everything we did that people stayed in their car or wore a mask. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The largest employer in the country is waving away a long standing tradition. Walmart is planning to phase out its greeters at more than 1,000 stores across the country. The retail giant says it is moving forward with a new role called “customer host” that is more physically demanding. The hosts will still greet people but must also be able to pass physical exams including lifting a 25-pound box and climbing ladders. Critics say the move targets their elderly and disabled employees, which make up a significant portion of the company’s greeters. “I can’t do that,” said Adam Catlin, who has cerebral palsy and has worked as a Walmart greeter for a decade. Walmart says it is striving to place greeters in other jobs at the company and the title of greeter will be officially eliminated April 26. “I want to keep my job past April 26 because I have made a lot of good friends and a lot of good memories over the years,” added Catlin. Walmart has not said how many greeters will lose their jobs but adds it is, “extending the current 60-day greeter transition period for associates with disabilities while we explore the circumstances and potential accommodations, for each individual, that can be made within each store.” 1252

Voters who are interested in getting their ballots in before Election Day can now do so at the San Diego County Registrar of Voters office.Early voting began on Monday, May 6 after the United States Postal Service sent out more than 1 million mail ballots. These ballots appeared in voters' mailboxes the very same day.Early voting continues through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m and until the polls close on Election Day at 8 p.m.The Registrar of Voters Office is open for weekend voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3.
