On Thursday, the United States Air Force Academy announced that President Trump nominated Lt. General Richard M. Clark to become the Academy's first Black superintendent. According to the U.S. Air Force Academy, if the Senate confirms Lt. Gen. Clark's nomination, he will become the second Black general to head up a service academy. He will be in charge of the Academy's undergraduate academic program, cadet military, and athletic training and character development.“I am extremely humbled and honored by the nomination to serve as the Superintendent of the Air Force Academy,” said Lt. Gen. Clark. “I’m also excited for the opportunity to build on the tremendous work of Lt. Gen. [Jay] Silveria and to give back to the institution that has given me so much. Go Falcons!”Clark has a history of leadership with the Air Force Academy, previously working as the Commandment of Cadets and at other levels of Air Force Command. He has pilot expertise as well, ranging from bomber to air-refueling. He currently leads the nuclear expertise for the Air Force at the Pentagon.“I have no doubt that Lt. Gen. As activists march through cities across the country, some protests that started off peaceful have ultimately ended in violence and looting. Now, more businesses have taken notice and are taking action. “These are the boards we have here,” said Joe Quintana who works at a souvenir shop in downtown Denver. After several neighboring businesses were broken into, Quintana’s boss decided to board up his business. “It takes time and more money to do this but trying to keep the safety out here,” he said. Construction crews are now working around the clock, protecting properties with plywood. “It can be hectic having to put this stuff up on a regular basis,” said handyman Jeffrey Berlin, who is reluctantly cashing in on the chaos. After being out of work for months due to COVID-19 concerns, Berlin is taking whatever jobs he can get, including boarding up buildings like Starbucks coffee shops. “I’d like to have a lot more (work) but I don’t want to get it under these circumstances,” he said. These circumstances have caused more businesses to board up their properties including some that recently reopened during this pandemic. “We’re just trying to stay safe because you don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Cody Kluck, who manages Osteria Marco. Just days after coronavirus restrictions were lifted, Kluck had to board up in fear of looters. “It’s like a false sense of security,” he said. “But I mean it will keep hopefully a brick or something from going through a window and people coming into our restaurant.”As protesters continue to call for social change across the country, others are now asking activists to alter their tactics saying protests should be done peacefully. 1708

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Millions of drivers received refunds on their car insurance after the pandemic forced a national shutdown. But the I-Team found out at least one major insurance carrier is asking to raise rates for drivers across Florida.Pinellas County resident Robert Stickler and his wife started working from home after the pandemic shut down Florida in March. “My family hasn't been driving, the cars have been sitting," Stickler said.Their insurance carrier Geico and many other large auto insurers in the nation refunded drivers. The Sticklers were refunded 15 to 20 percent of premium costs after the pandemic delivered a drastic dip in accidents and claims. That credit was reflected on the Stickler family bill.Robert Stickler welcomed the refund but said they suffered sticker shock when Geico socked them with a 0 rate hike to their 6-month policy in June. The increase was approved by the state. “It was going to be over 4 a month for 3 older vehicles,” said Stickler.In a letter from Geico:"There are many factors that affect your insurance premium such as age, driving history, location and the increasing cost of vehicle repairs." But this driver says that explanation does not add up. “There had been no changes what-so-ever,” said Stickler.We reached out to Geico and have yet to hear back. The I-Team checked state records and found Geico petitioned the Florida Office of Insurance regulation between March and August for a separate rate hike of nearly 7 percent after the pandemic hit.Doug Heller is with the Consumer Federation of America, a watchdog group that called on Geico this past May to give back some of its profits the CFA claims the company raked in during the pandemic as drivers stayed off the road. “We are paying premiums as if the pandemic never happened,” said Heller.The I-Team reviewed second-quarter profit earnings for some of the nation’s largest insurance companies. We looked at overall profits which include their auto insurance and found Allstate, Progressive and Geico business shot up by hundreds of millions of dollars for the second quarter of this year compared to the second quarter of 2019.Geico's parent company reported to investors its 2020 overall insurance profits were, ”...largely attributable to unusually high earnings from Geico due to lower claims frequencies. These results are likely to be temporary…"Former Florida Deputy Insurance Commissioner Lisa Miller says there’s a state law that regulates how much insurance can profit. “We have very strict set of factors of what these insurance companies can profit," Miller said. No one is alleging that Geico or any other insurance company made an excessive profit. However, Miller says if state regulators find that any auto carrier made an excessive profit, customers could be refunded under a Florida law meant to protect consumers.The I-Team requested an interview with Florida's Insurance Commissioner David Altmaier. BALTIMORE, Md. – In the Matthew Henson community of Baltimore, Dr. Marvin “Doc” Cheatham knows the neighborhood’s numbers. “These are rowhouses. 40 or 50 of them in a block,” he said, “1,200 houses; total 363 vacant or boarded up houses. It’s awful.” His Baltimore neighborhood is no stranger to challenges. “It’s tough. Very poor. High crime. High dropout rate. Open air drug markets,” Dr. Cheatham said. McKean Park, though, may be the start of something new. The abandoned homes that once sat there are now gone – and have a new purpose. “We take it, we clean it up and we give it new life,” said Max Pollock with Brick and Board, a place where old wood finds new life. They are just one of several groups involved in the “Baltimore Wood Project.” “They came from a really, really old structure,” Pollock said, as he showed off a 200-year-old piece of lumber. The idea works like this: before an abandoned building is torn down, crews salvage all the materials they can get from it – like wood – and keep it out of landfills. At the same time, they give the people who live in those neighborhoods the job of doing that. “It gives you a new sense of your community,” said Baltimore native Kobe Bland, who works at Brick and Board. “You start to view your community a little different because you see the potential of what could be.” What started out as the “Baltimore Wood Project,” though, is now evolving into the “Urban Wood Project,” with the hope it could be replicated in other cities.” In just four years, they’ve salvaged one million square feet of wood. The USDA Forest Service is spearheading the project and the work to expand it. “This is wood for example locked up in these vacant and abandoned rowhomes that would otherwise be wasted – sent to the landfill or otherwise wasted – and we see the potential to capture and reuse that wood for a greater good,” said Sarah Hines of the USDA Forest Service, who has worked on the project in Baltimore. Back in his neighborhood, Doc Cheatham said he’s seen what kind of change it can bring. “It brings hope,” he said.It’s a hope that comes from salvaging the past, to try and build a better future. 2171
