SAN DIEGO (KGTV)  - San Diego State University unveiled Thursday details about its plan for a stadium in Mission Valley that could serve SDSU and a possible NFL team.The stadium is currently proposed as a home for the Aztecs, with 35,000 seats. It could be expanded into a 55,000 seat stadium for the NFL, according to SDSU athletic director John David Wicker.Details about the stadium include an aluminum-panel exterior designed to resemble boats. The panels would change color throughout the day and be illuminated with LED lighting at night.Other features include more than 82 suites, 50 loge boxes, two end-zone party decks, six exterior balconies, and five different club sections.The site would also offer 90,000 square feet of retail space.The stadium is being designed by global architecture and design firm Populous, which also designed Yankee Stadium, the London Olympics, and the Super Bowl.SoccerCity supporters, who want to bring a Major League Soccer team to Mission Valley, responded with a statement from SoccerCity project manager Nick Stone. 1077

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A San Diego couple woke up to find guns pointed in their face inside their own home. The home invasion happened on the 3200 block of Bramson Place just before 7 a.m. on Monday. Officers say the couple was sleeping when they found the suspects inside their home. The suspects were masked and one of them also had a knife. Police say the burglars put the knife to the man's throat, cutting him several times. Neighbors were too afraid to talk on camera but told 10News said they heard all of the commotion. One witness said they saw the two men running towards a nearby parking lot and getting into a red car. Police don't have a suspect description since the suspects were wearing masks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- When the pandemic hit city leaders opened the San Diego Convention Center doors to house those living on the streets. But as that time will soon come to an end, the San Diego Rescue Mission is working to give those in need a safe place to stay.The transition during the pandemic was not easy.“For people experiencing homelessness, the rates of COVID have been very low, but it was absolutely a struggle,” says Paul Armstrong with the San Diego Rescue Mission.The City of San Diego recently announced its plan to close the convention center by December. The state has reserved funds to help the city buy at least one hotel to house the homeless. Unfortunately, the hotel’s 340 units won’t be enough space for everyone.“As they ramp down their operations there, we have to be mindful to make sure we’re giving as many opportunities to the people in the convention center,” says Armstrong.The San Diego Rescue Mission is stepping in to help. Team members visit the convention center a few times during the week to notify the people of their programs.Their emergency shelter is available for women and children.They also have a year-long “Mission Academy.” It’s a three-semester program. Semester one focuses on wellness. Semester two is center around education and training.“Semester three is really preparing them, letting them focus on housing and building up,” says Armstrong. “Working and building up that savings so that they can transfer into a successful, sustainable life.”The Rescue Mission says they have seen a large success rate from the students who have completed Mission Academy. 1617

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers are finding a place to stay through the Safe Harbors Network, an organization which got its start at the Christ United Methodist Church in Normal Heights. Pastor Bill Jenkins began giving shelter to Haitian refugees back in 2009. And for quite a while the church was the only immigrant welcoming shelter in southern California. Eventually, the Safe Harbors Network was created. It's a growing collection of churches, organizations, and individuals that house refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers. Pastor Jenkins says he's seen an explosion of interest from people wanting to help in recent months after Trump's zero-tolerance immigration policy went into effect. Safe Harbors works in cooperation with ICE to give shelter to people awaiting their day in court.   886

San Diego County handles approximately 9,000 cases of elder and dependent adult abuse every year. Elder abuse is defined by the Centers for Disease Control as "an intentional act, or failure to act, by a caregiver or another person in a relationship involving an expectation of trust that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older adult." Types of elder abuse include: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional/psychological abuse, neglect, or financial abuse. The county sees about 450 cases a year of criminal elder abuse cases, according to Paul Greenwood with the Elder Abuse Prosecution Unit of the District Attorney’s Office.  The District Attorney’s Elder Abuse Unit prosecutes crimes against seniors, as well as addresses the special needs of elderly victims. They meet with seniors to teach them how to protect themselves, train bank and credit union employees on protecting financial assets of elderly customers, and train first responders to be aware of issues involving elders.  The National Council on Aging? said approximately 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 60 have experienced some type of elder abuse. However, knowledge about elder abuse lags behind the fields of child abuse and domestic violence.
