BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun, Friday urged the Chinese automobile industry to enhance indigenous technology and foster domestic brands while visiting an auto technology show here.At the China Achievements Expo for Self-innovated Auto Technology and Products, Li Changchun said boosting innovative capacity was pivotal to economic restructuring and shifting the economic growth pattern.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said respect for innovation and talent should be the norm.The auto show, which runs from Thursday to Monday, features more than 140 cars from 16 Chinese companies. BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- More relief supplies, worth 20 million yuan (2.94 million U.S. dollars), have been sent from China to flood-hit Pakistan, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement Wednesday.The shipments mainly contained urgently-needed daily necessities, including grain, cooking oil, flour, sugar, salt and medicine, the ministry said in a brief notice on its website.The supplies are to be transported through a land route to the Sust dry port near the Pakistan-China border from Kashgar in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the statement said.However, the ministry did not say when the supplies would arrive, as workers were still rushing to repair the road linking Kashgar and Khunjerab Pass.China is one of the first countries to respond to the relief needs of Pakistan when it was hit by the worst floods in 81 years. China's first delivery of aid, worth 10 million yuan, was delivered on Aug. 4. So far, 40 million yuan worth of supplies provided by China have arrived in Pakistan.China decided to offer an additional 60 million yuan of relief supplies to Pakistan, MOC official Chong Quan announced Wednesday while meeting with Masood Khan, Pakistani ambassador to China.Masood Khan, on behalf of the Pakistani government and people, expressed his gratitude for China's assistance, saying the food, tents and medicine provided by the Chinese government were Pakistan's most urgently needed materials.Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said on Wednesday that some urgently-needed materials including tents, power generators and sludge-cleaning equipment provided by the People's Liberation Army to the Pakistani armed forces will arrive in Pakistan's Islamabad on Wednesday.

BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- China has sent 15,603 soldiers to participate in 18 United Nations peacekeeping missions since 1990, an official of China's Ministry of National Defense said Tuesday.Of the total, nine soldiers died while on the missions, said Tao Xiangyang.As of the end of June 2010, there were still 1,960 soldiers deployed in UN peacekeeping missions in nine mission areas or working in the UN peacekeeping department, Tao said.Also on Tuesday, a group of 38 foreign military attaches to China, who were from 36 countries, visited a training center for peacekeeping soldiers in Huairou District, suburban Beijing.

BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- China's largest gold producer said on Tuesday its operating profits rose by three fold to 1.55 billion yuan (228.09 million U.S. dollars) in the first six months this year.China National Gold Group Corp. said in a statement that its first-half revenue grew by 98 percent from a year earlier to 27.67 billion yuan and expected its full-year revenue to reach 50 billion yuan.At the end of June, the gold producer had 1,250 tonnes of gold reserves, eight million tonnes of copper reserves and 1.6 million tonnes of molybdenum, according to the statement.In the first half of 2010, the company added a total of 24.7 tonnes of gold, 683,000 tonnes of copper and 445,000 tonnes of molybdenum to its reserves, said the statement.The company had improved its development strategies through conducting merge and acquisitions, integrating regional resources and exploring overseas, said Sun Zhaoxue, general manager of the gold producer.

XINING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- A senior anti-corruption official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Monday urged strict supervision and inspection of relief and reconstruction work in Zhouqu County, which was devastated by a massive mudslide on Aug. 8.A supervision and inspection system must be established to ensure thorough implementation of the central authorities' instructions on disaster relief and reconstruction, said He Yong, deputy secretary of the CPC's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.He made the remarks at a conference on supervision and inspection of relief funds and supplies.He instructed intensified supervision and inspection of medical, mud-clearing, infrastructure rebuilding, resident relocation and epidemic prevention operations.He also ordered stepped-up supervision of the use of disaster relief funds, supplies and donations, and asked local officials to make public how they were utilizing the funds in a timely manner.He said the principle of openness and transparency must be applied throughout the period of disaster relief work and reconstruction, and vowed to punish any misuse of relief funds and supplies.The mudslide has killed 1,254 while 490 people remain missing as of Monday.
