SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As hospitals in San Diego County receive vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, a new concern is surfacing in the United Kingdom.A new COVID variant is reportedly infecting people rapidly and may be 70% more contagious than COVID-19. The new variant reportedly caused over 60% of infections in London this month alone. But there is good news, according to UC San Diego infectious disease expert Dr. Robert Schooley."It doesn't seem to be any more difficult to neutralize and should be responsive to the vaccines we're using,” Schooley told ABC 10News.RELATED: Britain hit with several travel bans over new coronavirus strainEven though there's no evidence yet of the new variant being deadlier than COVID-19, many European countries aren't taking any chances. Some countries have canceled inbound flights from England."The one caveat is if this virus accelerates an epidemic and more people are infected around you, your chance of getting infected will be greater with new and old strains, and so this vaccine will have to work harder, and we'll have to get more people vaccinated to have same level of population protection,” Schooley said. While the U.S. has yet to announce travel bans involving the UK specifically, Schooley said restrictions would certainly help the spread of any virus amid a global pandemic. 1336

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Concerns continue to grow amid reports that President Trump may allow border officials to ban US citizens suspected of having coronavirus from re-entering the country.Five years ago, Les and Marilyn Widd retired and made a big move, buying an oceanfront home in Rosarito, Mexico. That dream retirement has suddenly been marred by worries about COVID-19 and a possible presidential action. According to published reports, President Trump is weighing rules to allow border officials to temporarily block an American citizen or legal permanent resident from entering, if there is reason to believe the person has coronavirus."Absolutely upsetting, absolutely upsetting," said Les Widd, 70.Details about the possible plan are unknown, but Widd has heard enough."It's violating your constitutional rights to receive treatment in your own country," said Widd.Widd says if either of them were to develop symptoms, they would have few options. Their hospital in Rosarito isn't accepting COVID-19 patients."In Tijuana hospitals, they are absorbing everything from surrounding towns. They're at the limit. Difficult to get a bed there," said Widd. Both the Widds have go-to hospitals in San Diego where they've received past treatments. Both are covered under Medicare, and they say they have a right to use it, especially during a pandemic."We worked all of our lives and paid into it. We should be able to use our Medicare," said Widd.He also questions how effective a border ban would be."If push comes to shove, I will try any way possible to get over the border ... People will lie about their condition to get across the border," said Widd.Various estimates place the number of Americans living in Rosarito between 12,000 and 15,000 people. 1762

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As more and more Americans turn to their favorite online retailers this holiday season, banks are reminding shoppers to remain vigilant for thieves on the web.According to Adobe Analytics, shoppers spent about billion online this Black Friday, and another .8 billion on Cyber Monday the following week — making it the largest shopping day online in history. While online thieves have always been a threat to shoppers, there are even more shoppers at risk today."It's more important than ever to be hyper-vigilant and protect yourself from fraud," Sarah Bilyeu with San Diego County Credit Union told 10News reporter Vanessa Paz. "We're seeing a lot more people shopping online because of stay-at-home orders and during holidays, it'll increase and it's something vital to your overall financial wellness."Bilyeu recommends shopping with websites and companies that you're familiar with or that you've already been a customer of in the past. And while it may seem simple to some, customers are also reminded to avoid clicking on unfamiliar links or opening emails they don't expect. In 2019 alone, Experian reported identity theft had resulted in .9 billion in losses. If shoppers aren't careful, a hard year on finances can be stressed with identity theft."If you are unsure, call the institution that's sending the message to check if it's a valid message," says Bilyeu. "When shopping online or engaging where you give credit card numbers, make sure you're on a secure and not public WiFi."SDCCU has more tips to keep in mind when shopping online. 1582

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As six candidates took the stage Friday, the eyes on who would be the one to replace former Congressman Duncan Hunter focused mainly on three.Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar and Republicans Carl DeMaio and Darrell Issa. The three are polling among the top for two spots up for grabs in the March primary. The two highest vote-getters on March 3 will get a ticket to the November runoff for the 50th Congressional District seat.RELATED: 50th District candidates square off on stageHunter resigned in January after pleading guilty to one count of campaign fraud. Campa-Najjar is making another run for the seat after he narrowly lost in 2018 to Hunter, who was then under indictment. He opened the debate Friday. RELATED: New poll shows frontrunners to replace Duncan Hunter"For me it's about rewarding the middle class, lowering the cost of housing, making sure that health care is affordable, we will talk about all of that today," Campa-Najjar said. The debate mainly focused on housing. Former City Councilman DeMaio placed a lot of the blame for the state's high costs on Democrats in Sacramento. "We see people leaving because California is not what it once was," DeMaio said.RELATED: Issa secures two high-profile conservative endorsementsWith Democrats entirely behind Campa-Najjar, DeMaio and Issa have been attacking each other for that second spot in the runoff. Issa represented districts in San Diego County in Congress for nearly two decades. He did not run for re-election in 2018, saying he had plans to serve in the Trump administration. "The president nominated me not once, but twice, to serve in his administration but I was blocked by the Senate," Issa said.RELATED: Issa stands by ad ripped by his own partyThe race has garnered national attention mainly due to political attack ads between DeMaio and Issa. A recent Issa ad attacking DeMaio was criticized by his own party for displaying headlines that described DeMaio as gay. Still, Issa largely did not engage with DeMaio on the debate stage. Instead, it was Campa-Najjar who needled both. In his exchange, he took aim at DeMaio for always attacking state politicians.RELATED: San Diego Republican Party won't endorse a 50th District candidate"If you want to work on it run for governor man, half this room does not understand why you're running for Congress? All your proposals are about California," Campa-Najjar told DeMaio on stage. "And join Brian Jones in the Senate and help us reduce our taxes in California."Jones is also running for the 50th District seat."And the other half of the room knows exactly what I'm talking about," DeMaio responded to Campa-Najjar.RELATED: Who could take of the 50th District after Hunter's guilty pleaDeMaio says he can reform the state while serving in Congress."You can do both. It's called leadership," DeMaio added.Meanwhile, Issa says he would use his experience in Congress to be influential as soon as he's elected. "I believe with my 18 years of experience and seniority, I go right to the top of key committees," Issa said.Topics for debate included job growth, housing discrimination politics, and eliminating the cap on state and local tax deductions. 3199
