At 16 years old, Gabe Richards has been working hard to get good grades.He's secured straight As while being a part of the special education program at Marysville High School in Michigan.But, after getting invited to be honored at an academic awards ceremony Monday night, Gabe said he was disappointed to be told at the event that his invite was a mistake."We were really excited and don't get the chance to celebrate achievements all the time," said his mother Stefanie Grassel.Grassel said the faculty did apologize and acknowledge they mistakenly sent an invitation letter.However, as a mother, Grassel said she wants to see the policy changed to become more inclusive."It sends the message that they are less than a general education student, and that's wrong," she added.Richards also told us he feels disappointed after what happened. District superintendent Shawn Whiteman refused to do an interview in response to what happened. Instead, he issued the following statement addressing the matter:"The criteria for students to receive the distinguished “Academic Award” from Marysville High School are a GPA greater than or equal to 3.5 and that they are enrolled in a certain amount of academic-based classes.After speaking with our high school principal, it was evident that a mistake was made when identifying students for this award, due to the fact that a letter was sent home inviting a student to the ceremony who didn’t meet the full criteria.It is clear that the high school made an error in identifying students for this year’s award and we respectfully apologize for any grief this has caused.  Because of this, we will be taking corrective action so that this does not happen again in the future." 1768

As the debate over voting by mail continues, President Donald Trump told a North Carolina news outlet that voters should test election safeguards by voting both in person and via mail, something which could cause voters legal issues.Trump has expressed doubt in mail-in voting during the 2020 election cycle, claiming that mail-in voting is prone to fraud. But many states, some of which are led by Republicans, are ramping up mail-in voting efforts. Proponents of mail-in voting say that it is a safer alternative than in-person voting given the coronavirus pandemic.The president, speaking to a reporter from WECT, said he wanted voters to test the state’s safeguards.“So let them send it in and let them go vote, and if their system’s as good as they say it is, then obviously they won’t be able to vote,” Trump told WECT. “If it isn’t tabulated, they’ll be able to vote. So that’s the way it is. And that’s what they should do.”In North Carolina, it is a Class I felony to vote twice. The National Conference of State Legislatures has a list of laws pertaining to “double voting” on its website. BALTIMORE - A woman and man are dead and at least seven other people are seriously hurt after a gas explosion caused three homes to collapse Monday morning in Northwest Baltimore.As rescue crews and K-9's continued combing through the rubble overnight, a man's body was discovered just before 1 a.m. Tuesday. He is the second reported death related to the incident.A family member on Tuesday afternoon confirmed to WMAR-2 News, that the man found was 20-year-old Morgan State student Joseph Graham.Authorities haven't officially released the names of any of the victims.The explosion happened just before 10 a.m. near the Plaza in the area of Labyrinth and Reisterstown Roads, prompting a three-alarm response from 200 rescue crews from multiple cities and surrounding county agencies.About 200 people were impacted, including 30 who needed temporary housing.The American Red Cross is helping them with food, shelter, transportation, and medical services, while the city works to make sure the homes still standing are structurally sound.PHOTO GALLERY: DEADLY EXPLOSION TURNS NW BALTIMORE HOMES INTO RUBBLEBGE was able to turn gas off in the area by 9 p.m. Monday.Meanwhile, some electric lines were damaged causing power outages, but they've since been repaired with all power having been restored in the neighborhood.Investigators are looking into whether any customer-owned home utility appliances potentially contributed to the explosion.So far BGE says they've been unable to find any leaks or problems with gas mains and meters in the area.Prior to the explosion, BGE said they received no reports of gas odors or leaks at any of the homes in the last five years.The area’s gas infrastructure was installed in the early 1960s and was last inspected in July of 2019.Maryland's Vital Records building was forced to close for the rest of the day, following the explosion.WMAR-2 News spoke with two witnesses who explained what they heard and saw, and how they rushed to help. AstraZeneca is the latest drugmaker to announce promising Phase 3 trial results from its COVID-19 vaccine candidate.On Monday, AstraZeneca said its two-shot vaccine candidate has been 90% effective thus far along with no safety concerns.“These findings show that we have an effective vaccine that will save many lives," said Professor Andrew Pollard, the chief executive of the study. Excitingly, we’ve found that one of our dosing regimens may be around 90% effective and if this dosing regime is used, more people could be vaccinated with planned vaccine supply. Today’s announcement is only possible thanks to the many volunteers in our trial, and the hard working and talented team of researchers based around the world.”The company added in its press release that its vaccine candidate offers two distinct advantages over vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna — it's cheaper to produce, and does not need to be stored in ultra-cold conditions before use.AstraZeneca added that the company would "immediately" prepare regulatory paperwork to seek Emergency Use Listing status from the World Health Organization.AstraZeneca is just the latest drug company to report encouraging results from its COVID-19 vaccine candidate.Last week, Pfizer said it had submitted Emergency Use Authorization paperwork to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) after a final analysis of its vaccine candidate proved to be 95% effective in preventing COVID-19. As the US federal government was set to run out of funding at the end of Friday, the House of Representatives and Senate both passed H.J.Res. 107 on Friday, which funds the government through Sunday night. Without approval, the federal government would have entered a shutdown on Saturday.The measure passed through the House by a 320-60 margin. Less than an hour later, the Senate approved the bill by a voice vote. President Donald Trump then signed the bill late Friday night, officially keeping the government open this weekend.Without funding, essential federal government employees would work without pay. Other government employees would be told to stay home.The discussion on funding the government comes as House and Senate leaders are still working on a compromise on a stimulus package. Both sides have stated that legislators won’t leave Washington without approval of a pandemic relief package. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said congressional leaders will continue discussing a stimulus package over the weekend, but no votes will be called before Sunday afternoon.
