Tucked away in the small town of Eaton, Colorado, there’s a time machine capsule dedicated to one type of technology, and one man who has dedicated 35 years of his life to this collection. “My museum is called Lee Maxwell’s Old and Unusual Collection,” said 89-year-old Lee Maxwell. “I took up this hobby about 35 years ago, and it’s turned into an obsession. My collection is unusual that’s for sure.”Maxwell collects washing machines. He is the owner of the only washing machine museum in the country. “Why? Well a lot of people ask me why,” Maxwell said. “Since I’m not a golfer or fisherman, and I don’t like to bungee jump, I couldn’t afford corvettes, so I chose washing machines.”Maxwell said he owns a washing machine from every state, some dating back to the 1800s. “Over 1,500 machines,” Maxwell said. “The number is kind of a secret though, because I told my wife, Barbara, I would stop at a thousand. Keep that under your breath. 1,500 machines, 1,500 stories.” For 35 years, Maxwell traveled the country collecting washing machines to bring back to his home of 17 acres. “I spent a lot of time here the last 35 years,” Maxwell said, while standing in his warehouse full of washing machines. “I have to find a good home for it. There are some folks around the US that are interested in it. I want to find a home close to northern Colorado. I’m eighty-nine years old now, I would like to go eleven more years to really see it blossom.” Maxwell said he has a few organizations interested, but he did not want to give any more details. He hopes it will continue to grow as the largest washing machine museum in the country. “There are three attributes you have to have to be a washing machine collector,” Maxwell said. “You have to have space, you have to be insane, and you have to have a saint for a wife. Troy, Michigan police are investigating an on-the-job death at Jax Kar Wash.According to Sgt. Meghan Lehman the incident occurred around 1 p.m. Monday, when a Ford F-150 pick-up came off the automated wash area and hit two car wash employees near the exit. Both employees were transported to Royal Oak Beaumont, where one was pronounced dead late Monday afternoon. “This is the transition from the rails onto the actual driveway, so right when you’re switching it over to drive,” Sgt. Lehman said. The driver of the pick-up, a 64-year-old man from Rochester, is cooperating with police according to Sgt. Lehman. At this time, police do not think distracted driving or alcohol played a role in the crash. No charges have been filed against the driver. There is surveillance footage from inside the wash, which police will review as part of their investigation.“There’s no indication that there was any wrongdoing at the part of the car wash at all,” said Sgt. Lehman. The name of the deceased employee has not been released, as police are still notifying family members. The Jax Kar Wash location remained closed Monday afternoon while police investigated. The year 2018 was a tale of two stories: a year of record-breaking holiday sales and a year of retailers filing for bankruptcy. According to the Mastercard Spending Pulse report, brick and mortar stores saw a 5 percent increase in sales compared to last year. There was a 19 percent increase for online sales. However, it was also year big retailers like Sears filed for bankruptcy, and Toys-R-Us closed its stores. “Weak retailers are closing,” says marketing professor Darrin Duber-Smith. “It just takes them forever to close.” What does this mean for retailers as we head into 2019? “If the retailers that are in trouble--the ones that are kind of running out of cash, the ones that really look like they're going out of business--if they don't have a good holiday season, they're pretty much dead in the water in the first couple of quarters,” Duber-Smith explains. Despite an increase in holiday sales overall, department stores struggled. Sales were reportedly down 1.3 percent this holiday season. J.C. Penny’s stock fell below a share for the first time last week. Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue have been shutting down some of their flagship stores, and Nieman Marcus has big debt coming due in 2020 and 2021. Duber-Smith says debt is a make or break. “These brands that are saddled with so much debt aren't able to invest in their companies,” he explains. “They're not able to invest in marketing. They're not able to invest in e-commerce.” E-commerce is key. Online sales growth for department stores grew 10.2 percent, but Amazon is still king when it comes to online retailers. That's why some stores have decided to work with the retail giant. “Best Buy was left for dead,” Duber-Smith explains. “Now, they have a partnership with Amazon where you can try the products in-store and buy it on Amazon.
