NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The National Museum of African American Music is finally set to open next year.The grand opening was delayed this summer due to several pandemic setbacks, but a new date has been set for January 18, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Museum President and CEO Henry Hicks says it's going to be a very special day as NMAAM has been in the works for 22 years. Hicks says museum leaders were excited to open in the summer of this year, but the pandemic made it tough. Construction material was delayed, and they had to implement social distancing requirements for crews working.There are still some finishing touches being made on the museum but overall it’s ready for Nashvillians and tourists alike. Hicks says the museum will be a place that connects all generations and all walks of life through music.“Nashville is Music City and that really got its start with the Fisk Jubilee Singers. It evolved through an era of R&B and jazz being very prominent in the city and of course country music and I think the city has a job of embracing that country or Music City heritage," said Hicks. "This museum just really builds upon that.”NMAAM members will be the first ones to get access, but the following weekend, it will open to the general public. NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Opry Mills mall in Nashville announced plans to reopen Friday, one day after a shooting claimed the life of a 22-year-old man. The mall will reopen at 10 a.m. local time – fewer than 24 hours after a murder investigation began inside the building. There will be an enhanced Metro Nashville Police presence to ensure that shoppers and staff feel safe. The shooting happened just before 2:30 p.m. local time Thursday inside a hallway near the Auntie Anne's pretzel shop, just across from Old Navy. The victim, Demarco Churchwell, was taken to TriStar Skyline Medical Center, where he later died. Police said the gunman is 22-year-old Justin Golson. He's been charged with homicide. As soon as shots were fired, shoppers scattered, terrified after hearing those gunshots.  "I thought I was going to die, I thought I was never going to see my husband or daughter again,” one woman said. Churchwell and the alleged shooter apparently knew each other. Police said the shooting was the result of an ongoing fight between them.  1111

More than 5,000 people have signed a Change.org petition calling on the state of Tennessee to replace all statues honoring the Confederacy with statues honoring country music legend and native Tennessean Dolly Parton.Parton, a nine-time Grammy winner and Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, is also known worldwide for her philanthropy efforts. Following wildfires in the Smokey Mountains, Parton donated millions of dollars to help the community's recovery. She's also touched millions of lives through her charitable foundation.The petition, started by Alex Parsons on June 11, has quickly spread online. It's moving in on its initial goal of 7,500 signatures."Let's replace the statues of men who sought to tear this country apart with a monument to the woman who has worked her entire life to bring us closer together," the petition says.In an update, organizers clarified their stance, saying that "while the idea of replacing all of those monuments with Dolly Parton may seem funny, the history of those monuments is anything but."The petition comes as communities across the country hold conversations about systemic racism in the United States amid several high-profile deaths of black men and women at the hands of police in 2020. Last week, the state of Kentucky removed a statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis from its capitol rotunda, and the city of Richmond, Virginia has announced it plans to take down several Confederate monuments that dot the city.However, Tennessee has been more reluctant to remove Confederate statues.
