A former top White House official on Thursday delivered a full-throated rebuttal to the "fictional narrative" pushed by President Donald Trump and his GOP allies, while a US diplomat in the Ukrainian embassy provided impeachment investigators with a firsthand account of the President asking for an investigation of his political opponent.Fiona Hill, who served as Trump's top Russia adviser until she left the administration this summer, warned the House Intelligence Committee as part of the impeachment inquiry's last scheduled public hearing that the Kremlin is prepared to strike again in 2020 and remains a serious threat to American democracy that the United States must seek to combat."Based on questions and statements I have heard, some of you on this committee appear to believe that Russia and its security services did not conduct a campaign against our country — and that perhaps, somehow, for some reason, Ukraine did," Hill said. "This is a fictional narrative that has been perpetrated and propagated by the Russian security services themselves."Hill is testifying on Capitol Hill on Thursday alongside 1132

A ground search team in the Indian Himalayas has spotted five bodies on the unnamed peak where eight climbers are believed to have gone missing a week ago.Pithoragarh District Magistrate Vijay Kumar Jogdande told CNN Monday that the bodies appear to be partially buried in an avalanche on the peak in different locations. The bodies were identified following analysis of photographs taken by a helicopter that conducted an air survey of the area earlier in the day.By Monday afternoon local time, the search operation had stopped for the day, Jogdande said. Now, authorities are formulating a plan to recover the bodies. On Sunday, helicopter teams saw signs of an avalanche on the peak the group were thought to be on, according to two state officials. On Monday a lone chopper went to recce the area and its crew discovered the backpack at an elevation of about 5,000 meters.Jogdande said it was likely the missing team had been caught up in a "huge avalanche.""The chances of survival are almost zero now," he said. The missing climbers -- four Britons, two Americans, an Australian and their Indian liaison officer -- went missing in the region of Nanda Devi East, one of the highest peaks in India at just over 7,400 meters (24,000 feet.)The group was attempting to scale a previously unclimbed and unnamed peak believed to be about 6,477 meters (21,250 feet) high, according to 1393

The flood gates are now closed in New Orleans as the city braces for Tropical Storm Barry.Authorities have warned people in low-lying parts of Louisiana to evacuate. Rescue crews and National Guard troops are stationed across the city and state, preparing to assist in boat rescues. Earlier this week, heavy rain flooded the street and it may just be a preview of what’s to come as Barry gets stronger and moves closer to land. The storm is expected to make landfall in Louisiana early Saturday. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell urged residents and tourists to shelter in place starting at 8 p.m. CT Friday. “So, I dunno what’s gonna happen,” says New Orleans business owner Sarah Corsiatto. “I think we are gonna get a lot of water in the city.” Corsiatto says she won't leave town, but she is staying with friends to be closer to her coffee shop."I’m gonna try to be open as long as I can,” she says. She says as the storm moves in, she’ll secure her shop with tape and sandbags. Nearby, some historic French Quarter businesses are prepping for the storm by putting out sandbags. Barry could strengthen to a hurricane, but it’s not the high winds that have residents and officials worried, says Benjamin Scott, with the National Weather Service. “It's the large amount of water,” he explains. “Take a look behind me. This is the Mississippi River, already strained from a season of flooding."Scott says the number one threat will be the heavy flooding and rainfall. The Mississippi River this time of year is usually at 6 to 8 feet, but right now, the river sits at 16 feet. The forecast is calling for 15 inches of rain in the city and possibly 25 inches elsewhere. Tourists in New Orleans are taking the warnings from officials seriously. Jacques Desormiere and his friends say they aren’t taking chances. They spent the day stocking up on essentials. “Water, we have a bunch of nuts and things,” he says. “We can cook and eat without electricity.” Desormiere says he and his friends will likely wait out the storm. For the latest on Barry, 2063

Wedding season is about to begin, and guests are spending more than 0 on everything that comes with just one wedding, according to a Bankrate survey. With the high costs, 30 percent of guests are declining the wedding invite, because they simply can't afford to go. Wedding costs include travel to the destination, which can often involve purchasing flights and a hotel. There may be additional costs for a new outfit or babysitting, and of course, a gift for the couple. It all adds up, and experts say not to go broke for a wedding. Wedding planner Lauren Smith, with Hour Glass Productions, says whether you attend or not, giving a gift is a must. "If it's a relationship that you want to continue with, you should still give them a gift,” Smith says. “If it’s someone [who’s] ‘ehh’ and we probably aren't going to talk or see them again, then don't give a gift," Smith suggests. But how much should you spend? Most experts say it depends on your relationship with the couple. Smith says whatever you think the meal costs. "Plated meals cost more. Buffets cost a little less, and if you go to a food truck wedding, it’s even less than that," she says. While cash used to be frowned upon for some, Smith and recent bride Sarah Valencia say money is a great gift. "They just gave us money for our honeymoon fund, which was awesome,” says Valencia. “And maybe it was , , or whatever, but it was fine with us." While a gift is a nice gesture, Valencia says she was just happy her guests attended. 1526
