BEIJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao returned to Beijing Saturday night from a trilateral summit between China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK).     In a half-day meeting in Japan's Fukuoka, Wen, his Japanese counterpart Taro Aso and ROK President Lee Myung-bak discussed trilateral ties, the ongoing global financial crisis and other issues of common concern.     Before the meeting, Wen met Lee and Aso respectively, and discussed bilateral relations with them.     They issued a joint statement on tripartite partnership relations after the meeting.

BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), stressed the importance of strengthening national unity under the new situation Wednesday at a national conference on ethnic work.     Jia urged participants to seriously study and implement the recent instructions of Hu Jintao, state president and general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.     "Firmly hold to the main theme of a common unity and progress for all ethnic groups and closely center on task of promoting national unity and achieving a common progress for all ethnic groups," said the CPPCC chairman, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau.     In his speech, the top political advisor called for persisting in upholding socialism with China's own characteristics and firmly taking the road toward resolving ethnic problems with China's own characteristics; persisting in implementing a scientific concept of development and making efforts to promote a sound and fast economic and social development for ethnic groups and minority areas; persisting in and perfecting ethnic regional autonomy and make substantial efforts to protect the legal rights of ethnic minorities; and persisting in the fundamental demand for promoting social harmony and ceaselessly consolidating and developing an equal, united, mutually-supporting, and harmonious socialist national relations.     Strengthening national unity depends on the strengthening and improving of the Party leadership on the ethnic work, Jia stressed.     Vice Premier Hui Liangyu also addressed the conference. Different areas and departments should unify their thinking and action to Hu's instructions as well as the major decisions and arrangements made by the Central Authorities, said the official, who is a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.     The meeting was presided over by Du Qinglin, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and director of the United Front Department of the CPC Central Committee.     Present at the meeting were heads of provincial level United Front departments and ethnic work commissions from across the country.

BEIJING, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. president-elect Barack Obama Saturday discussed in a telephone conversation relations between China and the United States and major international issues of common concern, including the ongoing global financial crisis.     In the telephone conversation, Hu expressed appreciation to Obama for emphasizing in his election campaign speeches the great importance of China-U.S. relations, and for advocating the strengthening of China-U.S. cooperation in jointly responding to global challenges and in sharing global development opportunities.     Hu pointed out that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries 30 years ago, bilateral relations have generally kept developing despite setbacks, scoring hard-earned achievements and bringing about tangible interests to both nations.     As the largest developing nation and the largest developed nation, China and the United States share extensive common interests on issues related to world peace and development, and both assume important responsibility in this regard, Hu said.     In the new historical period of time, China is willing to maintain high-level exchange with the United States and also contacts at all levels, continue strategic dialogue with the United States, increase exchange and cooperation between the two countries in all fields, and strengthen the exchange of opinion and coordination with the United States on major international and regional issues, the Chinese president noted.     China and the United States should respect each other and accommodate each other's concerns, and appropriately settle sensitive issues between the two countries, particularly the Taiwan issue, in order to promote the China-U.S. relations of constructive cooperation to a higher level, he said.     Speaking on the same occasion, Obama said that China is a great nation and that China's development and success meet U.S. interests.     On today's international arena, U.S.-China relations are relations of vital importance. The development of U.S.-China relations is not only in the interest of both nations, but also benefits the world, Obama said.     Saying that U.S.-China relations face many development opportunities, Obama expressed the hope that the United States and China will strengthen cooperation, and promote greater development of bilateral relations, to bring benefits to both nations.     The United States hopes to strengthen consultation and coordination with China on security, climate change and regional hotspot issues, to promote settlement of the relevant issues.     Hu pointed out that the current global financial crisis has seriously impacted economic development and people's livelihood in all countries around the world. The international community should increase confidence, strengthen coordination and have close cooperation, in effectively dealing with this global challenge.     A world economic summit will be held in Washington on Nov. 15, and China attaches great importance to it. China is willing to discuss with other participants in the summit how to adopt powerful measures to reestablish market confidence as early as possible, how to prevent the global financial crisis from proliferation and spreading, and how to diminish its impact on real economies, in a bid to avert a possible global economic recession, Hu said.     The global financial crisis has led to the exposure of many deep-hidden drawbacks of the global financial system.     The international community should earnestly sum up the lessons from the global financial crisis and launch necessary reforms of the global financial system, on the basis of sufficient consultation among all interested parties, Hu said.     In particular, efforts should be made to explore in an in-depth way solution of such major questions as how to strengthen international financial supervision and regulation, how to improve the system of international financial organizations and how to improve the international monetary system, the Chinese president said.     Obama said that settlement of the global financial crisis requires close cooperation by governments of all countries, expressing the hope that the United States and China will strengthen cooperation at the world economic summit planned for November 15 in Washington.

BEIJING, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese netizens have made their voices heard more loudly and their presence better recognized in headline news events over the past year.     When the Beijing Olympic torch relay overseas was disrupted in April, almost all the Chinese msn messenger users posted "I love China" beside their names, a move that looked "overwhelming" to Kevin, a French man who was living in Shanghai at the time.     As to domestic affairs, netizens did not sit aloof. After the dairy scandal emerged in September, netizens' strong criticisms finally led to the resignation of Li Changjiang, then director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.     Yan Jirong, professor at Peking University's School of Government, said this incident showed the government was paying attention to public voices on the Internet.     A report released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on Dec. 2 showed about 206 million Chinese use the Internet as their main source of news.     According to the China Internet Network Information Center, under-30s are the majority of online news readers, accounting for about 69 percent of total Internet users.     On June 20, Hu visited the Qiangguo Forum, which is affiliated to people.com.cn, and chatted with netizens. BEIJING, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- The global financial crisis is an austere test of the nation and the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), and every Party member and official should work for economic growth, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Thursday.     Wen, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, said at a Party conference of the central and state agencies, "The world is experiencing the sort of financial crisis that has rarely been seen before, which has seriously affected our economy."     He called for confidence to achieve stable and relatively fast economic and social development.     He urged all Party members and officials to have a strong sense of responsibility and mission.     "Party members and officials must be a model of clean governance," he said. The people's trust needed to be won by sharing their trials.     In addition, Wen urged Party members and officials to avoid using public authority for personal interests and privilege.     "Be politically staunch, good in work style, and strictly disciplined. Work hard for the people, fulfill your duties, and be honest and clean," the premier said.
