BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China leader Jia Qinglin Monday met a visiting Taiwan delegation, who had attended a ceremony last week in honor of Huangdi, the Yellow Emperor, on the Chinese mainland.Huangdi, a legendary hero who lived 4,000 years ago, is considered to be the common ancestor of all Chinese people.The ceremony was held on April 16, the third day of the third month on the Chinese lunar calendar, which is considered the birthday of Huangdi, at mausoleums in Xinzheng, central Henan Province, Huangdi's birth place.Jia, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, told the delegation that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait were all Chinese and attending the ceremony showed they still loved the nation.Unification was always the trend of history, which could not be reversed by any force, said Jia, also chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, or the top political advisory body.He said people's concerted efforts on both sides had brought the situation across the Strait out of crisis, and achieved major breakthroughs in cross-Strait relations on the common ground that opposes "Taiwan independence" and adheres to the "1992 Consensus."Jia especially praised efforts of teachers and students of the Huangpu (Whampoa) Military Academy in fighting imperialist, warlords and Japanese invaders before the founding of New China, saying the school, which was established in 1924 and famous for its officer graduates, "greatly contributed to national unification and independence."He said the school's spirit should be continued to strengthen national identity across the Strait, promote exchanges, deepen political mutual trust and curb "Taiwan independence."

GUANGZHOU, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen fishermen were confirmed missing Thursday after a fishing boat on the sea near Shantou City of south China's Guangdong Province went missing, a spokesman of the Nanhai Rescue Bureau under the Ministry of Transport said.The spokesman said the boat "Yueyangxi96160" along with several other boats, were being used for fishing on Wednesday afternoon, but was discovered missing when the others returned to port.The bureau sent a search team out at about 4:15 p.m. Thursday after it received an emergency call from the other boats, the spokesman said.The rescue work is ongoing.

BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Indian presidents Thursday agreed that the two Asian countries should further develop partnership and cooperation for mutual benefits as well as regional and global peace and development.Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Indian counterpart Pratibha Devisingh Patil held talks in Beijing Thursday afternoon. YUSHU, Qinghai, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese authorities are working to protect the quake survivors in the northwestern province of Qinghai from potential secondary disasters.The government has provided sufficient food, drinking water and tents for more than 200,000 quake survivors, but landslides, floods and disease outbreaks may still threaten their lives.The magnitude 7.1 quake has killed at least 2,220 people, with 70 still missing and more than 12,000 injured.Recent rain has raised the risk of landslides as the devastating quake and aftershocks has destabilized mountain slopes. The rainy season starting in late May or early June will make the situation worse.A total of 139 survivors were evacuated to safety 7 km away from their make-shift homes in Changu Village of the quake-hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Region early Tuesday morning as rain-triggered landslides threatening their safety."It's still an arduous task to prevent and guard against secondary disasters," said Wang Jianbin, deputy director of the Qinghai provincial land and resources bureau.
