If you haven’t heard of Virgin Hyperloop One by now, pay attention; The company is making huge advancements in the race to develop the future of transportation.Imagine traveling between cities that are hundreds of miles apart in just a matter of minutes. The company says not only are they close to making it a reality, they're closer to doing it than you might think.In May, Virgin Hyperloop One orchestrated a test track, called DevLoop, in the middle of a desert miles outside of Las Vegas. It was the first full-scale test of the hyperloop concept, which was first introduced by Elon Musk in 2014.  Dr. Anita Sengupta, senior vice president at Hyperloop One, leads the team in charge of making this technology come together. Prior to joining Virgin Hyperloop One, Dr. Sengupta spent most of her career at NASA and was a member of the team that helped land a rover on Mars.“I spent most of my career working at NASA. I'm used to working with vacuum chambers; I'm used to working with electromagnetic propulsion systems," says Dr. Sengupta.Working on hyperloop reminds her of working on spacecraft, traveling hundreds of miles per hour through a vacuum tube in a magnetically levitating pod. Each pod is designed to fit 9 to 12 people. She believes it will remind passengers of a plane, but better."You don't have the traditional experiences you have in aircraft,” she explains. “There's no such thing as turbulence, right, because you actually have no air around you on the outside of the pod, so the ride is actually going to be a lot smoother. You're not even going to be able to tell that you're going that fast."Their last speed test reached 240 miles per hour, only limited, she says, by the length of the track. At full speed, they want to see pods travel about 700 miles per hour."Faster than a commercial airplane," says Dr. Sengupta.Hyperloop One hopes to have tracks operating within the next two to three years."I think it’s fair to say by 2023, we could have an operational hyperloop," she says.Right now, the company is working on feasibility studies in several states, to see where they could build their first routes."This would be a service that everyday people can use,” says Dr. Sengupta. “Otherwise, it doesn't make sense to build it. "Hyperloop One isn’t the only company working to make the hyperloop concept a reality. Musk and SpaceX have been explicit that the concept be open-sourced, encouraging others to develop the transportation. The tech mogul, as well as another company called Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, are in the race and working on their own hyperloop plans.So, how much will this cost? Who will pay for it?  Virgin Hyperloop One anticipates a public-private partnership."When it comes to infrastructure projects, you need to have a strong coalition of government, business community, and local community," says Dr. Sengupta.In the meantime, she and her team will keep working."This is high time to come up with a new mode of mass transportation, she says."We are reinventing transportation and doing it out here in the desert."Earlier this month, the company announced plans to build a 0 million research center in Bobadilla, a tiny village in southern Spain. It will be the Los Angeles-based company’s first off-site location in Europe.The site is slated to open in 2020 and will be used to test, develop and certify components to improve safety and reliability of their systems. IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A South Bay family is mourning the death of a popular airport worker to COVID-19.Ana Carina's first symptoms were a sore throat and a cough. Days later, in late July, she couldn't catch her breath."She says she felt she like had asthma. That's when we got concerned," said daughter Karen Miraflores.She says family members brought her mother to an ER, where she was quickly admitted, testing positive for COVID-19. A week later, she was placed in a ventilator."I got scared, became uncomfortable and uneasy," said her daughter.After a month on the ventilator, Carina actually tested negative for COVID-19, but her lungs were too badly damaged. This past Sunday, Carina, a mother of three adult children, passed away at the age of 56."We were all wishing this was just a dream. She was the sweetest. She would call us randomly just to tell her she loved us," said Karen."I just miss her so much. She was so nice and selfless," said Carina's son Luis Miraflores, choking back tears.For nearly a decade, Carina worked at the airport in customer service for an airline, well-liked by co-workers and passengers."Her legacy lives on in the people that she touched," said Karen.Her family can't figure out how she contracted coronavirus. Her hours at work had been greatly reduced. She lived with her children, and they all kept close to their Imperial Beach home. When she did go out, she carried a bag of safety supplies."A Ziploc bag that had santizies, gloves, extra masks," said Karen.In the end, Carina would contract a virus that killed her, despite having no pre-existing conditions."My message is that this is real," said Luis.Luis says he is frustrated when he sees people not wearing masks and not social distancing."Please wear masks. IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV)— The San Diego Sheriff’s Department is looking for a mother of two accused of stealing thousands of dollars from her children’s school. Last week, the department’s financial crimes division issued a public warrant for 30-year-old Kaitlyn Faith Birchman for felony embezzlement.Birchman was the President of the Imperial Beach Charter School’s PTA, until she was voted off the board in March. Months before, board members said they began noticing a lack of funds.“There were thousands of dollars that hadn’t been paid,” current PTA treasurer Elizabeth McKay said. McKay told 10News, she began connecting the dots last year when vendors from previous years continued to bill the PTA saying they hadn’t gotten paid. That’s when McKay, a former Coronado Police Department Sergeant began investigating. When she contacted the bank, they told her their account no longer existed. "We were very lucky that the bank was willing to work with us to put together a paper trail,” McKay said. “The checks she had written to herself and signed herself. ATM withdrawals that weren't anywhere near Imperial beach or had anything to do with a PTA event."In March, the board confronted Birchman. They had a Sheriff’s Deputy come to the board meeting to explain exactly what “embezzlement” meant."She [Birchman] said that it was just a misunderstanding,” McKay said. “It was a lot of blind faith that they thought if she says everything is okay, then everything must be okay."At the end of the meeting, Birchman was removed from the Board.Now the Sheriff’s department is looking for the woman they said stole directly from kids, forcing the PTA to cancel students field trips and special events. “I want her to think about her own kids. She needs to at this point, make things right by taking responsibility of her actions,” McKay said. “That's the best lesson that she can teach her own children. And to make herself a better person from here."Birchman’s children no longer attend Imperial Beach Charter school. McKay said with the generous support of the community and a large donation from General Mills Box Tops, this school year, the PTA is financially stable again. IMPERIAL BEACH (KGTV) -- Some South Bay parents said they are frustrated with their internet company after they learned of planned outages during the middle of the school day.Michael Crawford’s daughter is in her first year of high school and like many local students, is starting the year online. Crawford said the transition to virtual learning has not been easy for her. When he learned of the Cox communications outage planned for Tuesday, Crawford said it only added insult to injury. According to a notice he received on his door Friday, the planned service outage was slated to begin at 5 a.m. and last until three in the afternoon.He called Cox Communications, but did not get any answers. “I spent an hour on the phone with them. The lady seemed very sympathetic at first and then she [came] back on the phone and said there’s nothing we could do about it,” Crawford said.His neighbors received the same notice about the planned outage. Crawford questioned why the company doesn’t perform the work later in the day or on the weekends.“I pay them 0 a month for my services and that’s just my house,” Crawford said. “This is a lot of money they’re making and I don’t see why they can’t just pay some overtime for a Saturday. We’re all making sacrifices right now and even the big companies need to make the sacrifices as well.”A Cox Communications spokesperson confirmed the outage due to network upgrades. She said the time on the notice is a window and the average time that a customer is without service is two hours.“We recognize the inconvenience to our customers,” said spokesperson Ceanne Guerra. “Our crews are working really hard to complete this work as quickly as possible. This work is going to support their changing needs as they’re working from home and schooling from home.”Guerra said while they do work during off-peak hours, it is not possible to do so all the time.ABC 10News contacted the Sweetwater Union High School District regarding what students should do during any internet outages. “We ask students to work with teachers individually to ensure they receive their assignments and can work offline as best possible,” said spokesperson Manny Rubio. 2192

Dealers are offering more incentives than ever before to get drivers back on the road, and because of the coronavirus, you can stay home and find a good deal.“It’s the way the world is going now,” said recent car buyer, Stephanie Given. “Everything’s online.”Given is an ICU nurse working on the frontline of the pandemic, and in the midst of the health crisis, badly needed a new car.“We needed that second vehicle, the more reliable vehicle that we knew would be reliable in this time,” said Given.Her nearly 15-year-old ride was giving out, but, walking in to a dealership made Given anxious. “I have been under a little stress in my work life and personal life, and I was kind of dreading the stress of buying a car,” she said.So, she started her search online. “I found the car online through the Carmax app, and I was kind of let down when I saw the car was in Las Vegas, and it was just a couple seconds and they said, ‘We can ship it to you,’ and I said, ‘What? That’s amazing!’” said Given. Not only did she find the car she was looking for online, she did all the paperwork at home. “I kind of had a hybrid experience. I did my part online and then came to the dealership to pick up and take possession of the car,” she said.Given’s experience is now becoming the norm. Dealers are making it possible to do everything, from shopping to financing, from your couch. Some dealers, like Carmax, will even drop off the car at your door.“We want to take the scary four-hour dealership visit that you’d expect, and allow you to do as many things as you want at home,” said Corey Haire, the Vice President of sales at Carmax.“You can do everything from a virtual walk around where they’ll walk around the vehicle with a facetime phone call and take direction from the consumer as to what they want to look closer at,” said Karl Brauer, an Executive Publisher at Kelley Blue Book and Autotrader.Brauer believes this new way of doing business is here to stay. “I think it’s proving more efficient on both sides,” he said.Brauer said the car industry is expecting to see a big bounce back through the summer and fall. “People are moving into more confident, purchasing mindsets,” he said.According to Brauer, new car sales are down by about 31% compared to spring 2019, but used car sales haven’t taken such a hit—down only about 6%.“I think there are a lot of people are thinking maybe they want their own personal vehicle in lieu of public transportation, but these people aren’t buying a car because they’ve dreamed of one or have wanted one, this is purely for functional purposes,” said Brauer.So if you’re looking for a deal, Brauer said the first step is research, and then, look for combined offers.“We’ve seen deals for 0% financing, which were getting pretty rare recently. We’ve seen deals like deferred payments for three to four months, but we’ve hardly ever seen both of those at the same time,” said Brauer. Some dealers are offering longer term loans too. “If you’re looking at a new vehicle, and one of these 0% 72 or 84-month loans are available to you, that’s real money you’re saving over that kind of time,” he said.If you want the new car smell without the new car price, check out a 2019 model. “They were going to be hard to sell anyways with the 2020 cars coming out, but now they’re even harder to sell with all the incentives going on for the new cars,” he said.Brauer reminds buyers that, with any purchase, make sure you’re financially ready. For Given, she said the car and the price were just right, and the online process sweetened the deal.“I do think it was a little bit of retail therapy.
