LOUISVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) — Chief of Police Robert J. Schroeder is declaring a state of emergency for the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) as they wait for Attorney General Daniel Cameron's decision whether or not to indict the officers in the Breonna Taylor case.The department has canceled all off days and vacation requests until further notice."The public may also see barriers being staged around downtown, which is another part of our preparations," Sgt. Lamont Washington said in the statement. "It is important to note that the AG has no timetable for the announcement."Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency medical worker, was killed by Louisville police serving a "no-knock" narcotics search warrant at her apartment. They found no drugs in her home. The city announced a settlement with the Taylor family last week that included a million payment and changes to department policies.An officer was shot during the raid by Taylor's boyfriend, who has said he thought he was defending against a home invasion. The boyfriend was initially charged, but those charges were later dropped.The Louisville Metro Police Department fired one of the officers involved, Brett Hankison, in June, saying he violated procedures by showing "extreme indifference to the value of human life." The other officers involved in the case — Jon Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove — have been placed on administrative reassignment."To ensure we have the appropriate level of staffing to provide for public safety services and our policing functions, effective immediately the LMPD will operate under the emergency staffing and reporting guidelines as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures, Emergency Response Plan, and collective bargaining agreements until further notice," a memo sent Monday to all personnel states.A handful of buildings around Louisville have been identified as potential places for "backlash" if a decision is announced this week. MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- An infant left inside a baby box at a northern Indiana fire department is safe and being cared for. The child was left in the Coolspring Township Volunteer Fire Department's Safe Haven Baby Box in LaPorte County on Sunday. This was the second time in five months that the box has been used at this particular fire station, last November an infant was also left inside the box. “When this box was installed, we hoped that it would never be used," Coolspring Fire Chief Mike Pawlik said last November. "Yet we're thankful that it exists for cases just like the one."Baby boxes are safety incubators where mothers can anonymously surrender their newborn babies. The Safe Haven Law was authored by State Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) in 2000 and allows parents who feel they are unable to care for an infant that is less than 30 days old to leave the child with staff at a designated safe haven location with no questions asked. The Safe Haven Boxes give parents a way to leave the child anonymously without fear of arrest or prosecution“It is incredible to hear another infant’s life has been saved through the Safe Haven Law,” Merritt said. “This law provides overwhelmed parents with a safety net in a time of crisis, which could prevent the death of a baby. This is the second time in five months a baby has been discovered at this fire station, which shows people are aware of this law and this system is saving lives.”Last year, lawmakers approved a law allowing hospitals to install baby boxes where infants could be safely left inside. During the 2018 legislative session, the Indiana General Assembly passed Senate Enrolled Act 340,  which allows fire stations that are staffed 24 hours a day to use baby boxes. 1791

McDonald's is celebrating International Women's Day with a big, gleaming, W."For the first time in our brand history, we flipped our iconic arches," said McDonald's Chief Diversity Officer Wendy Lewis.The giant arches have been physically flipped at just one California restaurant. MIAMI, Fla. – Norwegian Cruise Line announced Tuesday that it would be keeping its ships docked even longer amid ongoing COVID-19 concerns.The cruise line said it’s extending the suspension of its 2020 cruises to include all sailing through August 31, all sailing in September except Seattle-based Alaska Cruises, and select October sailing.The select October cruises include two trips to Alaska, as well as two trips to Canada and New England.The company is offering guests who had an active reservation on a suspended cruise a refund of their cruise fare in the form of a future cruise credit (FCC) for 125% of the amount paid to date on June 25.The FCC must be used one year from the date issued for any Norwegian Cruise Line voyage embarking through 2022, according to the company.Norwegian says guests who prefer to not take advantage of an FCC can elect to receive a lesser refund equal to the amount paid to date to the original form of payment 90 days after form submission for sailings originally scheduled to embark anytime from July 1 onward.For suspended cruises that were set to embark between July 1 and July 31, this form must be submitted not later than 11:59 p.m. ET on June 19, 2020. For later cruises, a refund form will go live at 9 a.m. ET on July 6 and it must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. ET on July 17. 1343

Many schools are taking a different approach in helping children in school improve behavior.Dee Marie is bringing yoga to classrooms. She says she saw a need to teach non-violent coping skills after Columbine, so she created the non-profit group Calming Kids.The group teamed up with researchers at Harvard University to study the effects.“We got up to 93 percent less hitting,” Marie says. “We got incredible increase up to 86 percent increase in focus. Focus on their classwork, focus on their homework.”The simple techniques of the yoga practice are transforming behavior, even the behavior of bullies.“Students were able to settle in themselves better and started to get some ah-ha moments,” Marie says. “And what was really interesting was that the bullies started to recognize that they were bullies.”Marie’s program is global, reaching several states, Mexico and Puerto Rico.She's going back to the West Bank to teach for a second time next year.Similar programs are offered to help children.Jim and Lyneea Gillen started Yoga Calm when they saw students with learning disabilities or impacted by trauma having a tough time.“Initially I tried to get kids into counseling, but there weren't many services in a small town, and when there were, they weren't affordable for families,” explains Lyneea Gillen.The couple got their business accredited and began tracking results.“72 percent of the kids reported using the techniques at home unsolicited in a response to stress,” Jim Gillen says.Both programs now offer online courses.“It’s a solution to some of the problems we're seeing in schools right now,” Lyneea says. “I think we've met a need.”In Baltimore, some schools have even swapped detention for a meditation and mindfulness room and saw fewer children getting referred for discipline. 1812
