SAN DIEGO (CNS/KGTV) - A federal judge in San Diego today ordered the Trump administration to immediately start new asylum screenings for eligible reunified families, despite objections from the government that the agreement has not been finalized.Under the proposed settlement agreement – which U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw gave unofficial preliminary approval to last month – reunited migrant families would get a second chance at applying for asylum.Attorneys for the migrant families argued that when the families were separated at the border, most children were not interviewed to determine if they had a credible fear of returning to their native country. Their parents were granted interviews, but were so distraught after being separated that they didn't clearly advocate for themselves, attorneys said.Under the settlement, reunited migrant families still in the U.S. will be allowed to remain until all family members have completed the asylum process.When Sabraw unofficially approved the settlement, both sides agreed that the asylum determination process should get underway as soon as possible.Sabraw granted preliminary approval last week, paving the way for credible fear interviews to proceed within days of a migrant confirming his or her wishes to go forward with an asylum claim.The ruling appears to apply to about 60 people who are detained and had signed paperwork agreeing to the terms of the new process.It could end up applying to many more.Another status conference on the class-action lawsuit is scheduled next month. 1576

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A desperate Mira Mesa mother is pleading for tips after her teenage daughter disappeared, leaving behind a trail of disturbing clues.November 8th seemed like an ordinary Friday. Tina Camacho remembers asking her daughter Cirena Artero, 16, about her day at school."We talked, and she said her day was okay," said Camacho.Cirena is one of Camacho's five children."Around 6:45 p.m., we thought she went to her room. Around 7:30 p.m., we knew she was missing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 105-year-old World War II veteran is set to receive his college diploma 83 years after graduating.Bill Vogt, who was one of the first students to set foot on San Diego State University's campus after it opened in 1931, will receive his diploma in commerce retro-dated to Feb. 1, 1935, on Thursday.Vogt graduated from SDSU mid-year in 1935 but never got a printed diploma. He is the last remaining SDSU student to have attended classes at the university's old campus in University Heights, according to the school.The special presentation comes after Vogt elected to become a lifetime member of SDSU Alumni in May, a special alumni program offered by the university. He's also believed to be the oldest person ever to become an Alumni lifetime member, the school added.The WWII veteran served in the US Navy, and also served in the Korea and Vietnam wars. After battling cancer for four years, her family said she’s now in remission.The 10-year-old was invited to the Macy’s store to fill out a letter to Santa for the company’s annual Believe campaign. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A girl was killed while walking across Interstate 5 near the San Clemente Border Patrol facility Thursday.It's unclear how the young girl made it onto the roadway. CHP officials said the unaccompanied Hispanic girl was walking northbound on I-5, just south of the border inspection station before 10 a.m.The girl then crossed the freeway, walking westbound through traffic, the CHP said. She was in the number two lane when she was struck by a 2008 Chevrolet driven by a 21-year-old man from San Diego.CHP said the man was driving at about 30 miles per hour when he struck the girl. He tried to avoid her but was not able to apply the brakes in time. He remained at the scene for troopers to arrive.The girl was flown to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla but died of her injuries.CHP officials did not release a name or age of the girl.
