POWAY (CNS) - Authorities today identified a 69-year-old man who was gravely injured when he was struck by a car while walking in the same Poway intersection where sheriff's deputies were investigating a collision in which his wife struck and injured a pedestrian about 30 minutes earlier.Robert Tockstein of Ramona was struck shortly after 8:35 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Twin Peaks Road and Midland Road, and he died at an Escondido hospital early Wednesday morning, according to sheriff's Lt. Dustin Lopez and the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. In the first crash, which happened around 8:05 p.m. Tuesday, Tockstein's wife struck a man who was walking in a crosswalk at the intersection, Lopez said. The victim was transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido where he was treated for minor injuries. While deputies investigated the first crash, Tockstein arrived at the scene, Lopez said.Tockstein moved his wife's vehicle and as he was walking back to the scene of the crash he was struck in the east crosswalk of Twin Peaks Road, the Medical Examiner's Office said in a statement. The driver of the Toyota Prius that struck Tockstein remained at the scene and cooperated with deputies, Lopez said.Tockstein was transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he was pronounced dead at 1:58 a.m. Wednesday, the Medical Examiner's Office said. 1390

PRATHER, Calif. (AP) — A 9-year-old girl who lost her collection of baseball cards when a wildfire destroyed her family’s central California home received a huge surprise when firefighters presented thousands of new, donated cards and put her on the phone with her favorite player. Reese Osterburg didn’t get a chance to save her 200-card collection when the Creek Fire forced her family to evacuate. When local authorities heard about her loss, they put out a call for baseball card donations. A collector in San Jose donated more than 25,000 baseball cards, which were presented to Reese on Friday. She also received a call from San Francisco Giants player Buster Posey."This is the best day I’ve ever had," Reese told The Fresno Bee. "More than awesome, probably." 775

POWYS, Wales – A police dog in Wales had an eventful first shift and he deserves all the treats.Dyfed-Powys Police say their newly licensed dog, Max, found a missing mother and her 1-year-old child on the edge of a ravine during his first night on the job.Police say the 2-year-old German shepherd and his handler, PC Peter Lloyd, were crucial in tracking down the woman and toddler, who were reported missing on Saturday. The woman had reportedly not been seen or heard from for two days, which was out of character, and her phone wasn’t working.Thankfully, officers say the woman’s car was quickly found on a mountain road, which gave crews an area to start searching.“This is where PD Max’s tracking skills really came into play,” said Inspector Jonathan Rees-Jones in a press release. “Despite only recently becoming licensed, and on his first operational shift, he immediately commenced an open area search.”Police say Max and Lloyd covered a significant distance and at 1:30 p.m., they spotted the missing woman waving for help near a steep ravine on the mountain side. She was helped down, and arrangements were made for her and her baby to be checked out by medical professionals.“They were safe, but cold, and appeared to have been in the area for a significant amount of time,” said Rees-Jones.Max is a general-purpose dog, who will primarily be used for tracking and locating people in buildings and open air, tracing discarded property and tracking and detaining suspects, according to police.“I was really pleased that during our first operational deployment as a dog team, myself and Max were able to safely locate the missing mother and baby,” said Lloyd. “Max remained focused throughout the long search and he proved invaluable when he reacted to the call for help which resulted in us locating them.” 1825

President Donald Trump indicated this weekend to associates he is preparing to oust Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin, a source familiar with the conversations confirmed to CNN.CNN's Jeff Zeleny has reported two officials said Shulkin remains the most vulnerable cabinet member. The announcement could happen as early as this week, the source said. However, until an announcement is made, no decision in the Trump White House is considered final.White House officials did not have any comment.Chris Ruddy, the CEO of Newsmax Media and a friend of Trump's, told ABC's "This Week" today that he talked with Trump this weekend and "he did say that he's expecting to make one or two major changes to his government very soon."Shulkin won unanimous confirmation by the Senate last year and had enjoyed bipartisan support and the backing of the President, who touted his legislative victories at VA. But the situation grew more tenuous in recent months with Shulkin telling reporters that Trump administration political appointees have been working to oust him over policy differences. The rift between Shulkin and those within the agency and at the White House became public in February after Shulkin was the subject of a damning inspector general report related to a trip that he took to Europe last summer. While his standing at the White House has diminished, he retains the support of key members of Congress and the nation's veterans service organizations. The Washington Post first reported about Trump telling associates he was planning on ousting Shulkin. When asked last week about Shulkin's status, a VA spokesperson said, "There are no personnel changes to announce at the Department of Veterans Affairs. President Trump has made clear that he expects the Department's sole focus to be on providing quality care to America's veterans who have sacrificed to keep this country free and safe."The spokesperson added, "President Trump tasked Secretary Shulkin with reforming the VA so it could better serve the men and women who sacrificed to protect our country. Many reforms have already been enacted, many more are still needed, but nothing will distract the President, the Secretary and the Department from finding the best ways to provide care and benefits to our country's heroes." 2299
