BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- China's aviation authorities announced on Tuesday that more passengers traveled by air during the Spring Festival holidays, with Chinese airlines handling some 5.07 million passengers during the period.The number of passengers on flights during the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays, which ended Tuesday, was up 6 percent from the same period last year, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).On average, 72 percent of the seats on flights across the country were loaded during the holiday travel season, up 2 percentage points from the same period last year, according to the CAAC.To prepare for the holiday travel surge, the CAAC arranged 38,992 flights during the holidays, including eight chartered flights to Egypt to fly home 1,796 Chinese travelers stranded amid massive protests in the African country.
BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's central government on Wednesday called on local authorities to step up efforts to ensure a stable market supply of daily necessities, such as food and clothing, as freezing weather continues to plague south and southwest China.The Ministry of Commerce required local government departments to guide companies to increase supplies such as rice, edible oil, meat and vegetables.It also required local departments to closely watch market changes and release reserves of commodities when necessary, said a statement on its website.The statement said the government of southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has urged local supermarkets to maintain the prices of 10 types of vegetables that are affordable to the public, while authorities in the rain and snow-battered Guizhou and Hunan provinces guided logistics companies and wholesales markets to take measures to insure supplies.The Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday also ordered local departments to expand areas for growing vegetables when conditions allow, as agricultural experts were also sent to fields to help farmers save their crops.The country's meteorological authority forecast Wednesday that over the next three days, heavy snow and icy rain would continue in provinces and municipalities including Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Chongqing.

TAIPEI, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Five crewmen, including four Chinese mainlanders, had been rescued after their fishing boat from Taiwan's Keelung capsized Friday night off southern Taiwan's Kenting, local sources said Sunday.The other two crewmen, including the Taiwanese captain and one mainland fisherman, were still missing. BEIJING, Feb. 2, (Xinhua) -- All Chinese travelers stranded in Egypt are expected to have been returned to China by Thursday, the start of the Spring Festival, said China's national tourism authorities late Wednesday.As of the Spring Festival Eve, most of the Chinese tourists stranded in Egypt due to the country's nation-wide protests had been flown back to China by chartered planes, according to a statement released by the National Holiday Office, an inter-ministerial agency led by the National Tourism Administration.China had sent a total of eight "special commercial flights" to Cairo, Luxor and Hurghada to bring back Chinese citizens stranded in these cities, and six of the planes had returned, carrying 1,371 people, including those from Hong Kong, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.The Spring Festival is the Chinese lunar New Year, a time for family reunions, according to Chinese tradition.The National Holiday Office has also issued warnings about traveling to Australia, as tropical cyclone Yasi was expected to make landfall in northeast Queensland late Wednesday local time.
