CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) — Coronado officials say lifeguards received multiple reports of shark sightings this week, prompting warning signs to be posted for visitors.The city said four shark sightings were reported between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, and the sharks ranged in size from 6 to 10 feet long. One of the sharks was seen by a lifeguard who was on a personal watercraft.The sharks were reportedly within 40 yards of the South Beach area shoreline.The city has posted signs warning beachgoers who visit the area.Naval Base Coronado also posted on Facebook on Friday that shark activity was reported in the Breakers Beach area, and closed water activities until further notice.Just one month ago, a 12-foot great white shark was seen off Coronado's North Beach area by a lifeguard paddleboarding about 100 yards from shore, prompting a 24-hour warning to beachgoers but no water closures. 910

CNN said Thursday that it had severed ties with contributor Marc Lamont Hill following controversial comments the liberal pundit made about Israel."Marc Lamont Hill is no longer under contract with CNN," a spokesperson for CNN confirmed in a short statement.The move was first reported by the media news website Mediaite.Hill, who is also a professor at Temple University in Philadelphia, made the controversial comments during a meeting at the United Nations held for the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on Wednesday.In his remarks at that meeting, Hill said "we must advocate and promote non-violence," but added that "we cannot endorse a narrow politics of respectability that shames Palestinians for resisting, for refusing to do nothing in the face of state violence and ethnic cleansing."Hill also called for a "free Palestine from the river to the sea."The comments were immediately condemned by critics who said Hill was calling for the end of the Israeli state.Hill did not respond to a request for comment Thursday afternoon, but in a series of tweets he addressed the issue."I do not support anti-Semitism, killing Jewish people, or any of the other things attributed to my speech. I have spent my life fighting these things," Hill wrote."My reference to 'river to the sea' was not a call to destroy anything or anyone," Hill continued in a separate tweet. "It was a call for justice, both in Israel and in the West Bank/Gaza. The speech very clearly and specifically said those things. COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on people living with diabetes is a growing concern.The American Diabetes Association says nearly 40% of COVID-19 deaths have been from those with the disease, while 90% of the hospitalizations have been people with diabetes or other underlying conditions.“Diabetes was a health crisis and epidemic in this country before the pandemic, and what the pandemic has done really is shine a very bright light on an old problem,” said Tracey Brown, CEO of the American Diabetes Association.Brown has lived with diabetes for 16 years. She's worried about additional financial struggles brought on by the pandemic.Even before COVID-19, one in four people were rationing their insulin to get by.Brown says the current unemployment rate is higher among people with diabetes. So, the burden has only worsened for those that have lost health coverage because of job loss.The disease also disproportionately impacts people of color living in low income areas.Brown says even now in 2020, every 5 minutes, someone in the U.S. loses a limb because of complications from diabetes.“There are so many comorbidities that go along with this, which is another reason why I talk about the fact that if we want to address the wellbeing of Americans, and improve the wellbeing of Americans, you can't have that conversation without having a conversation about improving diabetes,” said Brown.Brown wants to make sure people with diabetes don't feel like they're alone right now.There's a page of resources available on their website, Diabetes.org. CLEVELAND, Ohio - Students across the nation are still adapting to their new learning environment as more schools have opted to begin the year with remote learning.But, a study from The Rox Institute revealed that girls in middle and high school are struggling significantly. Nearly 1,300 5th-12th grade girls, who attend 88 different schools, completed the survey.The findings show the pandemic has induced stress, feelings of isolation, and depression.Nearly 40% of girls said they had higher stress levels and 80% said they felt isolated more than they had before COVID-19.Clinical psychologist, Dr. Carolyn Levers-Landis said the findings shouldn't come as a surprise."Many are just wondering, "when will this be over? How much longer do I have? Things keep changing," she said. "You just feel like the rug is getting yanked out from under you over and over again."With girls spending less time with family and friends this summer, the survey said they're turning to social media even more. The results show one-third of respondents are spending six or more hours a day on social media.But, the screen time isn't leaving a positive impact. As many spend the time comparing themselves to others."Girls are struggling even without COVID. In a normal world, they're struggling. And then you isolate them and I think it's really hard for them to navigate their new space," said Robyn Cutler.Cutler is the executive director for Girls on the Run Northeast Ohio, an empowerment group for girls with a fitness component. The organization's website said over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-8th grades develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness.Cutler said it's okay for girls to be sad about missing their friends, but encouraged parents and caregivers to find ways to tap into their creativity."There isn't enough space in this isolation period for girls to feel like people are listening to them and interacting with them. Parents and caregivers can really do a great job by just making space for them to pay attention to their girl, have conversations with them, read with them," she said.Both Cutler and Dr. Levers-Landis said parents of young girls should be on the lookout for changes in behaviors.
