WASHINGTON, D.C. – President-elect Joe Biden introduced his picks for several of his most senior economic advisers at a press event on Tuesday afternoon. The group includes liberal economists and policy specialists who established their credentials during the previous two Democratic administrations. Biden is placing a premium on diversity in his selection of Cabinet nominees and key advisers. For treasury secretary, Biden has nominated former Fed chair Janet Yellen. She would be the first woman to lead the Treasury Department in its 231 years of existence. She would also be the first person to serve as treasury secretary, chair of the Federal Reserve, and chair of the Council of Economic Advisers. In introducing Yellen, Biden called her the most qualified person for the job, citing her work at the Fed following the economic recession of the late '00s.In referencing the hit Broadway play "Hamilton," which centers around the life of the first Secretary of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, Biden joked that Lin Manual-Miranda would eventually need to write a musical based on Yellen's life.Biden has also tapped Neera Tanden to head the Office of Management and Budget. Tanden would be the first woman of color and the first South Asian woman to lead the agency that oversees the federal budget. She currently serves as President and CEO of the Center for American Progress, an organization dedicated to advancing policies that increase opportunity for Americans.Additionally, Biden has chosen Wally Adeyemo as his deputy treasury secretary. He previously served the in the Obama-Biden administration as deputy director of the National Economic Council and deputy national security advisor. He currently serves as president of the Obama Foundation.Adeyemo would be the first African-American to serve in the role.Biden has picked Ceclica Rouse as chair of the Council of Economic Advisers. She’s a former member of the Obama-Biden council and currently serves as Dean of the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs. If confirmed, she will become just the first African American and just the fourth woman to lead the CEA in the 74 years of its existence.Jared Bernstein has been chosen as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers. He previously served as Biden’s chief economist in the first years of the Obama-Biden administration. And Heather Boushey will also become a member of the Council of Economic Advisers. She’s a longtime economic counselor to Biden and currently serves as President and CEO of the Washington Center for Equitable Growth, a nonprofit research and grantmaking organization she cofounded in 2013.Biden released this statement about his economic picks: 2704

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is expected to announce a new federal rule to speed up the environmental review process for proposed highways, gas pipelines and other major infrastructure.Critics are describing the move as a dismantling of a 50-year-old environmental protection law.Trump will travel to Atlanta on Wednesday to announce the federal rule as he seeks to make it easier to meet some of the country’s infrastructure needs. The government affairs director at the Center for Biological Diversity, Brett Hartl, says such a change may be the single biggest giveaway to polluters in the past 40 years. 625

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. intelligence officials believe that Russia is using a variety of measures to denigrate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden ahead of the November election and that individuals linked to the Kremlin are boosting President Donald Trump’s reelection bid. That's according to a rare public statement Friday from the country's counterintelligence chief, William Evanina. The statement also says that U.S. officials assess that China prefers that Trump not win a second term and that Beijing has accelerated its criticism of the president and its efforts to shape American opinion and public policy.Evanina's statement also links Moscow’s disapproval of Biden to his role in shaping Obama administration policies supporting Ukraine, an important U.S. ally, and opposing Russian leader Vladimir Putin. That assertion conflicts with the narrative advanced by Trump, who has made unsubstantiated claims that Biden’s actions in Ukraine were intended to help the business interests of his son, Hunter. 1028

Washington, DC, police have identified a man who shot himself in the head in front of the White House at just before noon Saturday as 26-year-old Cameron Ross Burgess of Maylene, Alabama."At approximately 11:46 am, Burgess approached the vicinity of the North White House fence line and removed a concealed handgun and fired several rounds, none of which appear at this time to have been directed towards the White House," the Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement Sunday.A law enforcement source told CNN the shooter shot his phone before shooting himself. No suicide note was found, but incoherent sentences were found in a book recovered on the scene, the source said. The man died from his injuries; no one else was hurt in the incident, a Secret Service spokesperson said. The victim suffered a single gunshot wound, and Secret Service personnel did not fire any shots, Secret Service spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan said.Burgess' remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, the police department said.President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, at the time and were scheduled to return to Washington on Saturday afternoon for the annual Gridiron Club Dinner."We are aware of the incident," deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said after the shooting. "The President has been briefed. I refer you to the Secret Service for any more information."The Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department has taken the lead in the investigation, the Secret Service spokesperson said. The Secret Service said Saturday that pedestrian and vehicular traffic around the White House was affected by the incident.Law enforcement personnel spent about four hours Saturday afternoon searching a maroon Honda Accord with an Alabama license plate parked on the street near the Capital Hilton hotel, a few blocks from the White House. After officers blocked off the area, a bomb squad swept the car, and law enforcement personnel removed several items from it, including what looked like pictures and documents from a cigar box, before towing the car away. A Secret Service source confirmed to CNN that the victim's car was located in the area where the search of the vehicle took place. 2264

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Miles Taylor, a former chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security, revealed Wednesday that he's the anonymous senior Trump administration official who wrote a scathing book last year that criticizes the president."Donald Trump is a man without character. It’s why I wrote “A Warning”...and it’s why me & my colleagues have spoken out against him (in our own names) for months," Taylor announced on Twitter. "It’s time for everyone to step out of the shadows."Read Taylor's full statement here.Taylor's anonymously written book “A Warning” paints a chilling portrait of President Donald Trump as cruel, inept and a danger to the nation he was elected to lead, The Washington Post reports. The book’s description on Amazon says it was meant to motivate readers to “consider how we judge our nation's leaders, and illuminate the consequences of re-electing a commander in chief unfit for the role.”The book was published in November 2019, more than a year after The New York Times published a bombshell op-ed essay by the same anonymous author. In the op-ed, the author claimed to be among a group of people in the White House who were working to keep Trump’s reckless impulses in check for the good of the country. As “part of the resistance inside the Trump administration,” the article’s author said the group believed Trump acts in a manner that is “detrimental to the health of our democracy” and that they vowed to do what they can to “preserve our democratic institutions.”The book and article have been criticized by the president and members of his administration. It also sparked a long guessing game in Washington to figure out who the author was.The Times reports that Taylor resigned from DHS in June 2019 and then went public with his criticism of Trump this past summer. He has since endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden for president. 1890
