YICHANG, Hubei, July 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam on the swollen Yangtze River is experiencing another test as flood flows peaking at 56, 000 cubic meters per second, the greatest peak flood of the year, arrived at the dam at 8 a.m. Wednesday, engineers said.The dam buffered the flood by discharging water at a rate of 40,000 cubic meters per second, holding up 16,000 cubic meters in a second, they said.The water level of the reservoir behind the dam rose to 158 meters at 8 a.m. Wednesday, about 17 meters under its maximum capacity of 175 meters. Flood waters are sluiced with the water outflux monitored at 40,000 cubic meters per second at Three Gorges Dam in Yichang, central China's Hubei Province, July 20, 2010. BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health has said it will draw upon its experience from the H1N1 flu control to ensure prevention of the general flu, as the World Health Organization (WHO) announced plans for the post-pandemic period."Based on the experience from A/H1N1 prevention and control, we will revise emergency plans and will continue flu prevention efforts in a bid to ensure people's health," said a statement released late Tuesday by the ministry.Figures from the ministry show that the weekly new A/H1N1 cases have remained below 30 since mid-April. Further, no deaths have been reported for 12 consecutive weeks.While announcing the coming of the post-pandemic period, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan warned that the A/H1N1 virus will continue to spread as a seasonal flu for some years.Chan urged health authorities to maintain alert for the virus.So far, about 800 deaths from A/H1N1 influenza had been reported in China, Health Minister Chen Zhu said earlier.More than 100 million Chinese have been vaccinated against A/H1N1 flu as of May 14.The A/H1N1 virus was first identified in Mexico in April 2009. More than 211 countries and regions have reported laboratory confirmed cases of the flu, including more than 18,000 deaths.

BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The number of criminal explosion cases as well as gun crimes in China dropped by 13.4 and 33.1 percent year on year, respectively, in the first five months of 2010, Ministry of Public Security said in a statement Monday.The statement, however, did not provide exact numbers.Police nationwide seized over 351 tonnes of explosives, 1.7 million detonators, 15,000 guns, 1.84 million bullets, 300,000 imitation guns and 170,000 illegal knives since the launching of a national crackdown on illegal explosive and guns, the statement said.The widespread publicity about the police crackdown apparently paid off with 3,099 tips received from the public which led to the solving of 1,538 cases and the arrest of 2,065 suspects, said the statement.Those who provided information to police were rewarded with 960,000 yuan (about 141,000 U.S. dollars) in total, it said.
