This year, voters in 31 of the nation’s 100 largest cities will choose a mayor in municipal elections that historically don’t garner the same numbers in terms of voter turnout as presidential elections. But the makers of a new smartphone voting app think they can make it easier for people to vote. This week, Denver became only the second place in the country to ever allow voting by smart phone. It’s called Voatz. Yes, a weird spelling, but it’s a straightforward concept: it’s an app for voting. “To get through verification, they have to take a ten second selfie video,” said Jocelyn Bucaro of Denver’s elections division, who says the app utilizes an individual’s biometric data—like face recogmition or thumbprint technology. “They have to look at the camera, they have to blink, move their head, so that the system knows it’s not a video of a photo," she said. Bucaro thinks that one day, this will be how we’ll all cast our ballots.“If we want to maintain a democratic system and have as many people participating as possible then some form of this will likely be available for all voters," Bucaro said.Right now, it’s just available for active duty military stationed overseas. But there’s a reason for that. Currently service members have to print, sign, scan, then email the document to election officials.Former FBI cybersecurity expert Andre McGregor said that made them the perfect group to pilot the technology.“When you compare it to the current, everything is better than a PDF sent via email, even fax is better than that,” McGregor said.McGregor is talking about the obvious concern with a voting system like this: security, something he says he was concerned about at first, too.“I had just as many skeptical thoughts as most other people thinking about the idea of voting on a device that’s in your hand.”McGregor looked into the potential pitfalls of the app before it went live with West Virginia’s military voters last year, and the app, which uses block chain technology, exceeded his expectations. He says trying it out on small groups is a good way to make sure it’s ready to go mainstream; disabled voters might be next to try it. 2168

The U.S. Army hasn't been able to do in-person recruiting at events because of the pandemic, so its esports team has been stepping in to fill the gap, increasing their presence online.“When we're streaming on different platforms like Twitch or Mixer or YouTube or even Facebook, you're going to see more frequency of that for soldiers showcasing their skillsets in different games or playing a game just casually for anyone to come in and have a conversation,” said Sgt. 1st Class Chris Jones, general manager of the Army Esports Team. The team has also been running and sponsoring online tournaments during the pandemic. This is a shift from their efforts last year going to video gaming conventions across the country. They say the online tournaments get the word out about Army opportunities and then a recruiter can follow up with people playing. It's also attracting someone who may not have considered joining the military.“So, it’s coming from someone who may be super passionate about gaming and loves esports and then they find that we have a whole lot in common to show that there isn't a very specific person that enlists in the army that some people might believe,” said Jones. The soldiers on the Army Esports Team are assigned to do this as their full-time job in the military for up to three years. As they work to recruit more people, one thing that's helping make up for the current shortfall is the number of people who are choosing to extend their time with the military. The Army recently exceeded its retention goal. 1545

The University of Phoenix settled a legal battle with the Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday, by agreeing to eliminate 1 million in student debt and pay million to the FTC, the FTC announced. The settlement marked a record for the FTC."This is the largest settlement the Commission has obtained in a case against a for-profit school,” said Andrew Smith, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “Students making important decisions about their education need the facts, not fantasy job opportunities that do not exist."The FTC sued the University of Phoenix for deceptive marketing to potential students, leading students to believe that the university worked with employers such as Microsoft and Adobe to create job opportunities. An example the FTC showed was of a TV advertisement that claimed that the University of Phoenix had a "growing list" of 2,000 partners while displaying logos for various large companies. In reality, these companies did not provide special job opportunities for students. The FTC will use its share of the settlement for consumer redress. The remaining 1 million will go to cancel student debt owed by former students who were enrolled around the time they were likely exposed to the university's deceptive advertising. The University of Phoenix said in a statement that it denies any wrongdoing. "After cooperating fully with the FTC’s inquiry, the University is pleased to have reached this settlement agreement and resolved this matter, which principally focused on a marketing campaign that ran from late 2012 to early 2014," the statement read. "The campaign occurred under prior ownership and concluded before the FTC’s inquiry began. The University continues to believe it has acted appropriately and has admitted no wrongdoing. "This settlement agreement will enable the University to maintain focus on its core mission of improving the lives of students through career-relevant higher education, and to avoid any further distraction from serving students that could have resulted from protracted litigation, as well as the time and expense of the litigation itself."Here is what's next for those former students affected by the settlement, according to the University of Phoenix:As determined by the terms of the settlement, a certain designated population of students who first enrolled between October 1, 2012 and December 31, 2016 are eligible for relief from accounts owed directly to the University. Other debts, including, but not limited to, federal student loans, are not covered and remain due pursuant to their terms. The University will automatically release outstanding account balances for this designated population of students. These students do not need to take any action. The University will notify them and manage the processing of their debt forgiveness. The University will ask the credit reporting agencies (Experian and Equifax) to delete the official record of debt for outstanding account balances for this designated population of students. The credit reporting agencies will then be responsible for processing any updates to the affected students’ credit reports. To the extent that access to diplomas or transcripts was restricted for these students because of the previously outstanding balance, the University will lift that restriction and will make official transcripts available upon request for this designated population of students at the cost of the published transcript fee. This will allow these students to more easily pursue further higher education if they choose. 3578
