There is a good chance this pandemic is having you go to the gas station less often. Fewer trips to the store, after all, means fewer fill-ups.While that may be good for your wallet, it's bad news for governments who rely on gas taxes to fund transportation construction projects. THE ISSUEFor every gallon of gas you buy, 18 cents goes to the federal government and the Highway Trust Fund. That money is then used to pay for transportation projects around the country. Additionally, each state imposes their own gas tax which can range from 14 cents to 57 cents per gallon of fuel. States use that money to fund transportation projects of their own. Simple economics suggest that when Americans drive less, there will be a loss in revenue for states. States are also losing money with sales taxes, tolls and DMV registrations, which is making a problem even worse. WHAT'S BEING CANCELED"The state is collecting less of that money," Alison Black, Chief Economist with the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, said. Black's organization has been tracking which states are cutting projects.Currently, 14 states have announced project delays or cancellations, valued at nearly .5 billion. These include Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia. There are 19 local governments and authorities that have announced project delays or cancellations, totally more than .54 billion. Ten states or local areas have vetoed, canceled, or postponed legislative initiatives or ballot measures related to transportation funding because of the pandemic. This includes several major initiatives in California's self-help counties. RELIEF COMING?Many states are lobbying for Congress for a bailout, but that is far from certain. While President Donald Trump, this week, did cut environmental regulations to speed up infrastructure projects, his announcement doesn't address the funding gap. 2017

Therapists are volunteering their time to help health care workers during the coronavirus pandemic.A nonprofit called The Emotional PPE Project is connecting medical workers in need with licensed mental health professionals. They can contact each other directly.“We think that's actually very important, because there are so many barriers to people receiving help, one of them being concerns about licensing implications or concerns about stigma,” said Dr. Daniel Saddawi-Konefka, Board Director and Co-Founder of The Emotional PPE Project.Saddawi-Konefka says it started with a simple text from his neuroscientist neighbor in March, saying “what can I do to help?”Together, the two of them created the online directory for volunteer therapists.While others were talking about ventilator and PPE shortages, Saddawi-Konefka realized resilience would be a crucial problem.“Health care workers, they experience higher levels of burnout, higher levels of depression, and despite that are less good at asking for helping, are less good at reaching out for help,” said Saddawi-Konefka.The group hopes to keep the program alive through the pandemic. They say all’s fair in love and war.And at least one Provo, Utah man took the epithet seriously when he seized an opportune moment to propose to his girlfriend a day before Valentine’s Day — from the back of a cop car.Provo police officer Courtney Manwaring pulled a man and woman over during a routine traffic stop Tuesday but soon discovered a warrant for the man’s arrest, according to a Facebook post from the Provo Police Department. Manwaring handcuffed the man, then cited his female companion for drug offenses.The man then asked Manwaring if he could speak to his girlfriend from the back of the officer’s patrol car. When Manwaring agreed, the man professed his love for his companion and asked her to marry him.“They both cried, and she said yes,” the Provo Police Department confirmed in their post.As of Thursday morning, the post had been liked nearly 500 times and shared 30.Police have not identified the couple involved in the arrest because they “want them to move past yesterday’s arrest and have long and happy lives.”The police department praised Manwaring for working through an enforcement issue while still treating people with dignity.The department even waxed poetic, citing a line from the famous opera, "Carmen."“Love is a gypsy’s child who knows no law.” 1296

There's a new app out there that's promises to help people check for skin cancer. It's called Miiskin.It's the first app to use artificial intelligence to do full-body skin mapping. It also uses augmented reality to track how moles, freckles and skin change over time.Doctors say apps like these can actually help during this pandemic.“That has led to a significant decrease in visits for screening such as colon cancer, lung cancer, and skin cancer is of course one of those that actually is affected by the pandemic,” said Dr. Arturo Loaiza-Bonilla with Cancer Treatment Centers of America.When doctors and patients are dealing with cancer, time is of the essence.Tools like this app don't replace doctor's visits, but they can help with early detection.“One month of losing a cancer that was just newly found is almost a 10% increase in mortality, so if the screening comes a year later when the cancer is already starting, then we are in a pretty dark situation,” said Loaiza-Bonilla.Doctors at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America say that while the apps shouldn't replace a full physical assessment, they can be used as an additional tool to track new moles and see how certain things develop.If you are at a higher risk for skin cancer and want to use one of these apps, it's important that you do so under doctor supervision.These apps are still not considered a medical device.Doctors hope these tools can eventually be paired with medical records, so patients can be empowered by knowing more about their own health. 1537
