BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhuanet) --Traffic authorities were still struggling to cope with days-long congestion on a major national expressway, nine days after traffic slowed to a snail's pace, and nearby residents are profiting on the latest traffic snarl by overcharging drivers for food.Since August 14, thousands of Beijing-bound trucks have jammed the expressway again, and traffic has stretched for more than 100 kilometers between Beijing and Huai'an in Heibei Province, and Jining in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China National Radio (CNR) reported Sunday.Small traffic accidents or broken-down cars are aggravating the jam, the report said."Insufficient traffic capacity on the National Expressway 110 caused by maintenance construction since August 19 is the major cause of the congestion," a publicity officer with the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau, told the Global Times on condition of anonymity Sunday.Under current traffic regulations, the National Expressway 110 (G110), heading northwest from Beijing to Zhangjiakou in Hebei Province, and then heading directly west, is available to trucks with a carrying capacity of eight tons and above. YUSHU, Qinghai, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the quake zones in China's far northwestern Qinghai Province would be quadrupled by 2015 on the basis of that of last year, Luo Huining, governor of the province said here Friday."By the end of China's 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), the GDP in Qinghai quake zones would reach four times as much as that of 2009, with the service industry accounting for 45 percent of it," Luo said during an exclusive interview with Xinhua, exactly 100 days after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Yushu in April.The earthquake left 2,698 people dead and 270 missing.Luo said local authorities would focus on improving public services and promoting urbanization of the quake zones during the reconstruction phase.According to Luo, authorities would try to help all farmers and herdsmen in the region settle down within three years, upgrade their housing facilities, and provide them with basic access to safe drinking water."By the end of this year, local government would invest 5.55 billion yuan to rebuild 80 percent of farmers' houses in the quake zones," Luo said. Total investment in housing reconstruction in the regions would reach 9.6 billion yuan within three years.

He asked local authorities to promptly evacuate residents, and speedily restore transport and telecommunication facilities in the area.The Vice Premier asked the local water, meteorological, and land authorities to closely monitor the situation and issue prompt forecasts and warnings on the floods and rain.Monitoring geological risks should be immediately launched in the towns, villages, and areas along roads and railway tracks, Hui said.Dangerous zones should be marked and people should be prevented from entering such risky areas.Hui said more work was needed to be done to ensure residents have food to eat and water to drink. BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Rising domestic iron ore production and slowing steel demand have hit some foreign miners and affected the global market, industry leaders said on Tuesday.China's iron ore imports dropped for the third straight month to 47.2 million tons in June, while spot prices have dropped to about 2 per ton after peaking at 5 per ton in April.The country's iron ore imports rose 4 percent year-on-year in the first half of this year, figures from the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) showed. But domestic ore output increased by 28 percent year-on-year to 485 million tons in the same period, with output rising 37.6 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter."Rising domestic ore production is the main factor that drove down imports, largely impacting supply and demand on the global market," CISA vice-chairman Luo Bingsheng said.The figures form part of the bad news for international mining companies in Australia and Brazil that provide more than half of the ores to China.Iron ore imports from Australia, Brazil and India accounted for 62.3 percent of the country's total ore consumption last year.Brazilian company Vale already predicted in June that the share of imported ores in China would drop this year.About 40 percent of Chinese steel mills have to make cutbacks or put plants on maintenance, blaming increasing costs of imported ores and declining steel prices. Oversupply in the industry will continue to lower production, further driving down ore imports in the third quarter, Luo said.The CISA will also reduce the number of licensed iron ore importers to regulate the imported ore market."We will announce new rules for the industry soon, which include higher standards on the environment, energy consumption and capital requirement," Luo said.
