SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is expecting cooler temperatures this week, but another heatwave isn't far behind. Local air conditioning companies have been swamped with service calls. Philo Mitman is a service technician with ASI The White Glove Guys."When this heat does come, our call volume is tripled, quadrupled cause everyone needs it now," said Mitman. Mitman said it's important to replace filters, possibly every month, depending on use. "A dirty filter is the biggest thing as a homeowner that can cause bigger issues because if that is neglected the big motors can get seized up, they can overheat , you can block coils off which causes big, big problems," said Mitman.Another common mistake, according to Mitman, is closing vents. "Common misconception is that people close vents off to save money, when in fact, it actually costs you more money when you do that because your system is designed for a certain amount of air flow to be delivered to the home and if you start cutting that off , the system tries to make up for that so it works extra harder," said Mitman. Mitman also suggests testing the system before it's needed."Run some stuff, it's like an old car, you can't just let it sit forever you gotta test it out." 1244
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is among the top cities for termites, according to a new ranking from Orkin. San Diego placed 11th among 50 other cities around the U.S., but America's Finest City wasn't alone. Los Angeles was ranked 2nd on the list. The company says all areas of the U.S. are prone to subterranean termites, but Pacific U.S. and coastal regions of the Southeast also have the threat of drywood termites. RELATED: Water rupture causes millions of dollars in damages to La Jolla homeTermites generally swarm based on favorable weather conditions, Orkin says, but different types of termites swarm at different times. Subterranean termites swarm in the spring and summer while drywood termites usually swam in the late summer and fall. Orkin says termites find their way into homes because urbanization leaves fewer dead trees laying around. "U.S. residents spend an estimated billion annually to control termites and repair termite damage – which occurs in approximately 600,000 homes each year,” said Glen Ramsey, an Orkin entomologist.RELATED: Devastating 'ARk' storm envisioned for California by U.S. Geological SurveyOrkin says the list is based on data from metro areas where the company performed the most first-time customer termite treatments from February 1, 2018 to January 31, 2019. Trees and shrubs close to homes can also pose a risk. According to Orkin, structural fumigation is a treatment technique used to control drywood termite infestations. This type of treatment method should only be used when the infestation is extensive, hard to locate or difficult to access, the company says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Loyal FC’s inaugural USL season in 2020 was a roller coaster, but team officials said they were proud of all they accomplished this year."I'm extremely proud of our team. On the field, our goal was to make playoffs. Now, we didn’t achieve that, but more important than that, we want to live to our values every day, and we unequivocally lived to the values we want to live to,” said Landon Donovan, the U.S. soccer star who serves as the team’s executive vice president. The squad, playing in the United States Soccer Federation (USSF)-sanctioned Division II, first had to deal with the repercussions of a global pandemic, postponing their season in March. Then, in August, players in their match tested positive for coronavirus. But after each hurdle, the team showed up on the turf, determined, and ready to play.RELATED STORIES:San Diego Loyal match postponed due to positive COVID-19 testSan Diego Loyal SC forfeits point due to racial slurSan Diego Loyal SC walks off field over alleged homophobic slurPhoenix Rising FC forward suspended after use of homophobic slur against San Diego Loyal SC playerThen towards the end of the season they battled another dilemma when one of their players faced racial and homophobic slurs on two separate occasions, in back-to-back games."When I heard it, I lost it," said Donovan. This led to Donovan's decision to peacefully protest and forfeit both games."We preach often they're humans first, athletes second. It was important we stood by our teammate, brother, someone who now feels like a son, and made a decision that was bigger than sports,” said Donovan. The players, on the Phoenix Rising and LA Galaxy, who allegedly made those slurs were suspended by the USL.The San Diego Loyal could have potentially made it to the playoffs, but Donovan said the stance they took for something they believed in surpassed moving forward in the season.Although there's no more goals for the team this season, they're aiming towards a new one -- one that focuses on the future."It's now our responsibility to make sure we're proactive in being part of the solution. We need to educate, speak to people, help them learn why it's important and why it meant so much to us." 2238
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rideshare drivers all over California are on strike protesting recent pay cuts by both Uber and Lyft. A small but vocal group of the drivers gathered at the San Diego airport Monday morning, opting to take part in a statewide protest against the companies they say are taking money out of their pockets. Recently, Uber announced it would be cutting drivers wage from 80 cents per mile to 60 cents. Workers say that’s on top of other cuts they’ve dealt with over the years. Drivers who spoke with 10News say other states like New York require companies to pay a minimum rate of more than per hour. Uber and Lyft both issued statements after the protest.Uber said in part, “…we're introducing a new Quest promotion feature, while also changing the per minute, per mile and minimum fare rates. These changes will make rates comparable to where they were in September."Lyft told 10News: "We are always open to conversations around how we can make Lyft better for drivers, but what we hear from the majority is that this is a flexible option that works for them." 1090
