We've all faced challenges communicating during the pandemic, whether it be a shaky Zoom call or asking someone to repeat what they said through their mask. But for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, communication has been even tougher. “First thing I did was start carrying a pad with paper and pen and I'd have to ask people to write things down. I can’t understand, when I walk into a store sometimes, what people are saying," said Michael Conley.Born deaf, Conley relies on reading lips to communicate and says others in the deaf community rely on facial expressions, both of which are often hidden behind a mask now in public. Conley says while many people are understanding, others get frustrated when he can't understand them. Conley decided not to go to his aunt's funeral due to the communication challenges he would face while at the airport, renting a car, and at the funeral itself. “As a deaf person, I think I’ve been isolated a lot anyway, and this just adds to it," said Conley.And after losing his job, Conley faced other communication challenges at home.“So many of us working from home, we’ve lost our jobs or something has happened where we have to make phone calls we didn’t have to before," he said.But the tech world is helping improve accessibility, with companies like Zoom and Google enabling live captioning for video calls, transcribing conversations within seconds.Conley’s also relied on an app that provides real-time captioning for phone calls. Called InnoCaption, calls are captioned by either a stenographer or automated speech recognition software.“It really changes everything," said Conley. "Before, I used to dread making phone calls. Now, it’s not a problem; it’s freed me completely.”Funded by the Federal Communications Commission, the app is available at no cost for the deaf and hard of hearing."It’s very intuitive," said Conley. "Everything is converted into text in real-time."Conley says in-person communication would be easier if people wore clear masks, but right now, that’s not happening much, making the innovations in his hand that much more of a lifeline. 2123
When it comes to voting in-person, Election Day in Tennessee went off without a hitch and some say election workers had much to do with that.Two of the many election workers who helped make it happen were a husband and wife who have worked the polls for more than 30 years.Tuesday was a busy day for Ira and Norma Hendon, voters got in line in Clarksville at 7 a.m.But the Hendon's work started even earlier at 5:30 a.m. And it lasted until about 8 p.m. as they and others made sure every voter who wanted to cast their ballot did so with no problems.Ira and Norma have been election workers for decades, starting in Stewart County and now Montgomery County."But when they ask you how long you've been there, it’s kind of embarrassing," said Norma.They say in the many years since they began working the polls in 1988, a lot has changed including the voting machines themselves."They were the huge machines that looked like photography things with curtains in the front."Ira is 88 years old and Norma is 86 years old and they say there's no slowing down, not even for COVID-19. They say they felt safe the entire time with their masks and gloves.From former President George H.W. Bush to President Donald Trump, this couple has never stopped helping a first-time or long-time voter on Election Day.And even during a pandemic, they say they were encouraged by the turnout this year's large turnout."It was so inspiring to see so many people who had medical and physical issues. WILLIAMSTOWN, Ky. — Northern Kentucky law enforcement officials are working extra hard this time of year to keep any "Grinchiness" out of their respective "Whovilles."Before Grant County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Conrad hits the road these days, he arms himself with kindness, in the form of gift cards.“It’s part of the Sheriff's Santa Project,” Conrad said.It’s an idea that was brought to the office three years ago by their chaplain.“I really think projects like this give us a glass-half-full attitude, rather than a glass-half-empty,” Grant County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Rev. Tim Polley said. “Don’t we all need some joy in our lives?”The answer for Grant County’s deputies is "yes."“We make a legit traffic stop,” Conrad said. “In lieu of writing a citation, we hand out a gift card to our local businesses.”Several drivers who got a Sheriff's Santa surprise were both grateful and thankful, a nice reminder to use a turn signal.The project does more than just promote good driving, it also drives business to local shops and restaurants who could use a customer boost during the coronavirus pandemic.“Typically, we deal with the more negative aspects of humanity, so when we can do anything that's positive, it's a blessing to us,” Conrad said. “We swore an oath to the Constitution. With billions of dollars in federal aid slated to expire within hours, thousands of airline employees are bracing for potential job layoffs and furloughs in the coming days.The CARES Act, passed by Congress and signed into law by President Donald Trump in March, allocated billion in federal aid for U.S. airline companies who were floundering amid the COVID-19 pandemic. However, those bills were only allocated through Oct. 1 — meaning that aid expires on Thursday.Several airlines have already announced that they will be forced to lay off thousands of workers if Congress does not pass a bill that would allocate more bailouts to the airline industry.In August, Delta issued a WARN notice of potential mass layoffs with the state of Georgia that more than 2,500 more could face extended furloughs. The company has already offered early retirement packages to thousands of pilots.According to the Associated Press, American Airlines informed employees in August that it will cut more than 40,000 jobs — 19,000 of them through furlough and layoffs — in October if the business environment did not improve.On Monday, pilots with United Airlines approved a plan that would avoid the furlough of 2,850 pilots which would have begun Oct. 1. In exchange, pilots agreed to reduce their minimum work hours. The airline still plans to cut 19,000 jobs in October, according to CNBC.CNBC also reports that there is bipartisan support to offer more federal aid to the airline industry. However, Republicans and Democrats have not reached a deal on a larger stimulus package, leaving airlines lost in the shuffle. The Democrats included additional airline bailout funds in a .2 trillion stimulus package on Monday, and talk regarding funds for the industry has "progressed" with the White House in recent days.According to figures from the Transportation Security Administration, the agency is routinely screening more than a million fewer airline passengers every day than it would have at the same point a year ago — an indication that demand for air travel is still lagging amid the COVID-19 pandemic. 2108
