CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Coronado residents heard a plan from the Port of San Diego Monday night that would allow for 350 new hotel rooms to be built on the island.Those who showed up were not happy.“Most of the residents don’t want this development to happen,” said resident Kelly Sarber. “The city can’t really handle what we're dealing with right now,” she added, referring to the island’s notorious traffic.The new proposal is part of an update to the Port’s master plan, which includes 2,403 acres of land across 34 miles of waterfront around San Diego Bay.In Coronado, the new master plan would allow for 350 hotel rooms to be built in the north Coronado subdistrict, which includes the Ferry Landing and the area occupied by the existing Marriot Hotel.“What this plan sets out is potential growth for next 30 years,” said Lesley Nishihira, planning director for the Port.She said currently they have not received a plan from a developer to actually build a hotel on the Ferry Landing property. However, if approved, the updated master plan would allow for one to be built eventually. Though, any project proposal would also have to go through a public review period.The comment period for the Master Plan draft goes through July 31. CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Zoo and the owner of a local canoeing business helped rescue more than 50,000 honeybees thought to have been living in a garage since the early 1990s.The bees were about 2 miles from the zoo, in Avondale. Experts think the bees had been colonizing a garage wall for 25 years, entering and leaving through a small hole near a window.That long time period might explain the colony's large number: Honeybees typically live about three to four weeks, while the queen lives three to five years.Dirk Morgan, owner of Morgan's Canoe and Morgan's Natural Buzz Honey, used a specialized vacuum to safely suck up the bees for transport. The vacuum has a weak air flow, just enough to draw in the honeybees but not so strong they'd be harmed.He also carefully cut out the brood -- which has all the young, eggs and larvae -- and put it into a new hive. That's so the bees won't have a reason to return to the garage."When these bees end up at the zoo, they'll have a home where they'll be taken care of, we can use them for education, put them in an observation hive to show kids the miracle of a bee being born," Morgan said.Rather than reaching for bug spray, experts hope you'll call someone to have honeybees rescued if you find them on your property. Kari Bruskotter, member of the Butler County Beekeepers Association, said it's a win-win for professional beekeepers to remove a swarm: You get the hive out of your space at little to no cost, and they get "free bees."Although rates of colony collapse disorder, which devastated the global population of honeybees at the turn of the century, are declining, Bruskotter said, their numbers still haven't recovered. Exterminating bees in your space further reduces the population -- which, in turn, drives up the price of bees when keepers like Bruskotter try to purchase them.Finding them a new home, on the other hand, helps everyone."You get them out of your house and you get the satisfaction of knowing you're contributing to keeping our bees healthy," Bruskotter said. "Pollinators are required for a lot of the fruits and vegetables we eat; your plate gets very boring if we don't have natural pollinators around." 2214

(KGTV) - A group of armed suspects robbed a Sprint store on University Avenue in City Heights Monday night.San Diego Police say three suspects entered the store around 7:45 p.m. Witnesses told investigators that they were forced to the back of the store as the suspects raided a storage area.The suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of tablets, phones and cash, said police.A car matching the description of the suspect vehicle was later spotted at the Mobil gas station on Camino Del Rio North in Mission Gorge. (KGTV) - Its been almost six months since a drunk driver destroyed an iconic flower shop, the Coronado Flower Lady.Shanel Albert had only taken over as owner a year before the accident happened. She's continued to operate despite many challenges along the way.The business took a financial hit, forced to sell their van and take out a loan.But from the wreckage came kindness and love from the community.Shanel's husband Steve worked tirelessly to build a new flower shop.His friends at WeldTec Designs let him use their shop and tools, all while helping him along the way. COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Scientists say an enormous chunk of Greenland's ice cap, estimated to be about 110 square kilometers (42.3 square miles), has broken off in the far northeastern Arctic. They see it as evidence of rapid climate change, which is leading to the disintegration of the Arctic's largest remaining ice shelf. The section broke off a 50-mile long fjord at the front end of the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream, where it flows off the land and into the ocean.
