A tidal wave of information hits us daily from the moment we open our phone and computer, and when it comes to social media, spotting "fake" from "fact" before you share news and photos takes some work! "More people are getting their information through social media,” says Katy Byron, program director of MediaWise with the Poynter Institute. Byron points to a Stanford University study, explaining just how widespread the issue of deciphering fiction from non-fiction is among teens. "More than 80 percent of teenagers don't know the difference between a real news story and a native advertisement online," says Byron. This is why Poynter’s MediaWise program was created. "We want to reach 1 million teens by 2020," says Byron. The program uses teen fact checkers that post social media videos to help others to determine what is real and what’s not. The crusade of teens across the country are also helping others determine how to debunk misinformation. “I think this is something anyone can do right now,” Byron says. Byron says before sharing pictures and articles online, ask yourself these three questions: 1. Who's behind the information? 2. What is the evidence? 3. What do other sources say? "I hope that we reach as many kids as we can with the curriculum and what we are teaching on our social media channels, so that they'll take these skills with them throughout their lives," Byron says. 1417
AURORA, Colo. -- For a two-and-a-half-month-old baby, Huntleigh has gone through a lot. She was born with her organs outside her body due to a rare birth defect called Omphalocele. "Omphalocele is a developmental anomaly that is a failure of the normal enfolding of the baby during development,” said Dr. Ken Liechty, a pediatric and fetal surgeon at Children's Hospital Colorado. Basically, omphalocele means organs like the stomach, bowel, and intestines are outside the baby’s abdominal wall, but still inside a sack. Surgeons are challenged with assessing each individual case and getting those organs back into the baby’s body. Thankfully, for Huntleigh, that surgical correction was possible almost immediately after birth. "Her organs and intestine were slowly reduced back into her abdomen – similar to rolling up a tube of toothpaste where you’re slowly pushing things back down into the abdomen and then closing the muscles over it,” Dr. Liechty said. From California to South Carolina, a former Marine is riding is motorcycle across the country to raise money for Save the Brave.Major Scott Huesing is riding to honor his friend Dave White, a former Navy Veteran, who recently passed away from alcohol poisoning.When asked to give the eulogy at his friends funeral, Huesing want to do something more along the way. He's riding 4,600 miles round trip to raise money for Save the Brave, a nonprofit that's combating suicide and Post traumatic stress disorder among veterans and first responders."This pandemic has created a lot of fear for people and it’s isolated people," Huesing said. For veterans and people dealing with post traumatic stress, isolation is probably the worse thing for them. I think it’s probably the jump off point to where they reach hopelessness."According to a United States Department of Veterans Affairs Report, suicides are on the rise. In 2017, more than 45,000 Americans died from suicide and 6,130 of them were U.S. Veterans."I think right now people want to feel united around something and to be able to hop on my Harley and drive 4,600 miles round trip, I think that gives people a reason to come out and support," Huesing said.One of his first stops was in Tucson, but he's been riding ever since. FONTANA, Calif. -- Metal scrappers aren’t making as much money as what they used to. “A long time ago we got maybe 14 or 15 bucks,” Harry Sawyer said. “But now we get maybe .” Sawyer has been scrapping metal for more than a decade and says he’s never seen prices this low. “I don’t feel good about it,” he said. “I don’t feel good about it.” Workers at American Metal Recycling in Southern California say the prices started dropping soon after international tariffs hit. “We are talking anywhere between 0 to what it is now a ton,” said metal buyer Erick Valdez. “So, it’s half price. It’s pretty bad.” Valdez says all metals – including steel, aluminum and copper – were all hit hard. “There’s really nothing that made it through pretty good through these tariff wars,” he said. Everything was messed with.” With less money to make, Valdez is seeing less people recycling metal. “Before we’d recognize what their name was – first and last name,” he said. “Now we’re like, ‘what’s your name again?’” So why should you care if metal scrappers are making less money? Well, international economists say when prices are raised by tariffs – that increase in cost is passed to consumers – and ultimately hurts other parts of the economy. “There have been some analysts that say for every steel job you save, you loss 16 in the rest of the economy,” said Walter Hutchins, J.D. M.A., a professor of global business at the University of Redlands. “If the regular Joe is union worker for US Steel, he may or she may have gotten some kind temporary benefit from the tariffs,” he said. “But when that same worker goes to buy a F-150 pickup or his pension fund has shares of Ford Motor Company stock in it, that average Joe could be quite harmed.” While the sticker shock might be driving some scrappers away, other metal industries say they are flourishing. “You can be a high school dropout and you can still make 0,000 in my industry,” said Randy McClure, who owns and operates the Welding Skills Test and Training Center in Rancho Cucamonga. Though he’s seeing the price change in metals, McClure is also seeing the demand change for work. “I don’t know if it’s more work because the tariffs came in but there is more work than there are people to do the work,” he said. “Not having enough workers is a bigger problem than the tariffs. That’s for sure.” But for the scrappers out there on the streets and the workers recycling the metal, the small payoff could impact this industry’s future big time. 2530
